Chapter 29 â The Duchessâs Misunderstanding
âWhy is she still so small?â
Inside the carriage heading back to the Abner estate, Sharon Abner frowned as she spoke.
Across from her, Wendel lifted his head to look at her.
âYou mean Lady Annelia? Why hasnât she grown? Is she not eating properly?â
âNo, Your Grace. Every meal sent to Lady Anneliaâs room is inspected personally. The maids take very good care of her.â
âThen whatâs the reason? Sheâs still skin and bones.â
Wendel tilted his head slightly, thinking of Anneliaâs plump, rosy cheeks lately.
âSheâs actually gained quite a bit of weight, Your Grace. Compared to when she first arrived, thereâs a world of difference.â
âThatâs what you call âgaining weightâ?â
Sharon furrowed her brows.
So the child had been that thin when she first came to the mansion?
Just then, the carriage turned around a bend.
Out the window, Sharon could see a smaller carriage following behindâthe one Annelia was riding in, together with her maid.
Sharon looked at it for a long moment, then muttered irritably,
âThat child really keeps me busy. I can hardly live in peace anymore.â
When she first met Annelia, sheâd been running around the territory hunting down Longton spies.
After that came preparing a separate room for the child, expanding the kitchen menu, and overseeing the household changes that followed.
That tiny thing would wander through the main estate, exploring every corner. Sometimes, sheâd sneak into the library to read random books.
When she got bored, sheâd go to the training grounds to watch the knights practiceâbowing her little head politely to the soldiers as they passed.
And recently, she had somehowâout of nowhereâpicked up a skilled magic engineer off the street and made him one of Abnerâs people.
ââŚWhat about the thing I asked you to look into?â
Her voice was casual, but her gaze was sharp.
Wendel was silent for a moment before replying.
âWe havenât seen any signs of her trying to contact Anne Clarke.â
âI see.â
Sharonâs eyes narrowed slightly.
She still remembered the first timeâthe letter.
When that little girl had used the familyâs secret crest to send a strange message, giving her crucial intelligence about Longtonâs spies and saying, âPlease donât ask me how I know.â
***
âIf you just let me stay and donât ask anything, Iâll study really hard! Iâll make lots of magic formulas when I grow up!â
âAnd Iâll succeed in all the research the Duchess tells me to doâŚ!â
It had been the kind of story no sane person would easily believe.
And yet, Sharonâs answer had been simple.
âI wonât ask you anything. Not how you found that crest, nor how you got the spiesâ information.â
But that promiseâto not question herâwasnât the same as letting the whole matter drop.
âSo, youâre saying the person behind her isnât Anne Clarke?â
âDo you want my opinion, or do you want the most likely explanation?â
âThe latter first.â
Wendel nodded.
âAnne Clarke remains the most suspicious. Sheâs the only one who could have given Lady Annelia such sensitive information.â
âAnd?â
âI canât think of any other candidate. My investigation shows that Lady Annelia barely interacts with anyone elseâapart from Anne Clarke. And after all⌠sheâs only four years old.â
âSo youâre saying the child mustâve used Anne Clarkeâs information to get close to me.â
âYes, thatâs correct.â
Sharon gave a slow nod.
Then Wendel hesitated before speaking again.
âMay I tell you what I personally think, Your Grace?â
She looked straight at him. âGo ahead.â
âAs I said, itâs undeniable that someone is behind Lady Annelia. Otherwise, thereâs no way she couldâve known about the spy network or the existence of the family crest.â
He wasnât wrong.
Even with her sharp intellect and prodigious magical ability, it was impossible for a four-year-old to know that much.
It was only natural to assume someone had been guiding her.
Perhaps even using her for some ulterior motive.
That was why Sharon had moved Anneliaâs quarters to the main estateâto keep a closer eye on her.
âButâŚâ Wendel continued, âI donât believe Lady Annelia approached you with bad intentions.â
Sharon slowly lifted her eyes.
âWithout her, we never wouldâve uncovered the Coel familyâs corruption.â
ââŚâ
âAnd today, with the Empress Dowager and the Crown Princeâif I may speak plainly, Your Grace, that was an unexpected but tremendous stroke of luck for the Abner family.â
ââŚYouâre right about that.â
Sharon thought back to how warmly the Empress Dowager had treated Annelia.
The Empress had even said she would personally come to Anneliaâs birthday celebrationâbringing the Crown Prince with her.
The Empress Dowager herself, who had rarely appeared outside the palace for years.
All to celebrate the birthday of a four-year-old child?
The noble circles would never stop talking about it.
They would say the Abner family had risen so high that even the Empress Dowager would attend their sponsored childâs party.
Wendelâs tone softened.
âAnd more than that, I can feel something whenever Iâm around her.â
âWhat do you mean?â
âSheâs wary of me, Your Grace.â
Sharon frowned deeply.
A hint of irritation slipped into her voice.
âWhat did you do to make that little one wary of you? Didnât I tell you to smile more?â
âThatâs not it. Lady Annelia is wary of everyone.â
Sharon fell silent.
It wasnât that she hadnât noticedâ
but hearing it said aloud left an odd feeling in her chest.
âOf course, she smiles often and speaks politely. But she never fully opens up to anyone. Itâs as if sheâs always waiting for something bad to happen.â
ââŚâ
âAnd recently⌠Iâve heard some unsettling rumors.â
Sharonâs brow rose slightly. âWhat kind of rumors?â
Wendel hesitated for a long time before lowering his voice.
âI believe⌠she might have been abused. Since her time at the orphanage.â
Sharonâs eyes widened. âWhat did you just say?â
âThere are stories from the maidsâthat sheâs overly cautious around them, almost fearfully so.â
âWhat?!â
âThey say sheâs constantly apologizing, always saying things like, âIâll do better,â or âIâll be useful.â As if sheâs terrified of being disliked.â
Sharonâs mouth fell open.
Now that she thought about it⌠she had heard the girl say such things before.
Wendelâs expression hardened.
âWhen you put it all together⌠my conclusion is this.â
And before he could even finish, Sharon already knew what he was about to say.
âThat woman Anne Clarke used the child,â she said coldly. âThe girlâs talented, and Anne mustâve exploited that.â
ââŚâ
âWhen she heard about Longtonâs plan to buy the child through âadoption,â she panicked and wrote me that letter.â
Everything suddenly made sense.
âShe must have known that only I had the power to stop Lambert Longtonâs schemeâso she reached out to me for help.â
The realization hit Sharon like a thunderbolt.
Even harder than the moment sheâd discovered Camilla Coelâs betrayal.
She could almost see it nowâ
that small, fragile child, trembling and crying before her cruel teacher.
âAnnelia! Canât you do anything right?! I told you to complete that magic formula!â
âI-Iâm sorry, Teacher! I canâtâIâll do better, pleaseâ!â
The veins in Sharonâs temples pulsed with anger.
âBring me Anne Clarkeânowâ!â
But Wendel quickly stopped her, his face tense.
âThereâs no evidence yet, Your Grace. And if you drag her in right away, what if the young lady sees itâŚ?â
Sharon froze.
ââŚShe would be frightened. Badly.â
A long sigh escaped her lips.
Her fists clenched tightly as she looked out the window.
The maids said she acts like sheâs begging not to be hated?
That image flashed vividly before her eyesâ
âH-hic⌠Iâm scared⌠Annelia did wrong⌠please donât hate meâŚâ
She could see it clearlyâ
the little girl, crying in a maidâs arms, terrified of making a mistake.
Even on her first night in the mansion, hadnât she said something similar to Sharon herself?
That sheâd be useful, that sheâd work hard.
Sharonâs expression hardened with resolve.
âI wonât let that tiny thing relive such horrors again.â
âI agree completely,â Wendel said quietly.
âShe was so excited when we mentioned a birthday party, too.â
Sharon recalled the image of Annelia walking back to the carriage earlier that dayâtrying to look calm, but her little feet practically bouncing with joy.
âThe birthday celebration will be postponed.â
âYes, Your Grace.â
âInterrogating Anne Clarke comes after that.â
âYes, understood.â
Sharon narrowed her eyes sharply.
âAnd one more thing. Even if we bring Anne Clarke inâ
that child must never find out.â
In Sharon Abnerâs mind, Anne Clarke had already become an irredeemable monsterâ
the cruel abuser who had scarred her precious ward forever.
