Park Hwayeon, an ordinary young woman, was chosen during the Samgantaek (the final royal bride selection) at a very young age. After receiving her education at the detached palace, she married the king and ascended to the position of Queen.
However, after becoming the target of the Queen Dowager's hatred because of an unfortunate incident, Hwayeon was forced to perform a prolonged act of repentance. When she fell ill with a fever, the king used her illness as an excuse to send the Queen to a detached palace to recover.
While living in exile at the detached palace, Hwayeon hears that her mother is critically ill. She secretly leaves the palace to visit her, but suffers an accident and loses all her memories.
The amnesiac queen can no longer recognize even the king himself, and to make matters worse, a charming young man begins lingering around her.
Unaware of her true identity, the queen is pursued by assassins and finds her life constantly in danger. Meanwhile, the desperate king tries every possible way to win back the heart of his estranged queen.
Having lost her memories, the queen lives as a proud yet innocent commoner with her hair tied in a traditional ribbon. Though she pushes the king away, she ultimately makes him fall in love with her all over again.
