Chapter 9Â
How to End a One-Sided Love
âIs there really something going on?â
âNo⊠there isnâtâŠ.â
I buried my head on my desk. I could feel my cheek being pressed against the wooden surface.
Hooâ I exhaled, and my hair fell down from where it had been draped.
âHaaâŠ.â
I could barely hear my friends chattering noisily around me.
From one classroom to anotherâhow far could it really be? Yet he came to pick me up every time.
Because of that, I was suffocating, struggling to breathe.
Still⊠thereâs no way heâd do that for just anyone.
Then that would mean Iâm somewhat special to my seniorâŠ?
Smack!
I raised my hand and slapped my own cheek.
Have you lost your mind? You already confessed. And got rejected. What exactly are you trying to end like this?
As I tried to slap my cheek again, my hand was suddenly grabbed by Dora.
âWhy are you acting up again?â
She took a bite out of the apple in her hand with a crunch. The moment I saw Doraâs face, I came back to my senses.
âWhat am I even doing right now?â
Do I still like my senior?
I groaned softly while grabbing at my disheveled hair.
âNo, seriously, why is he acting like that? Why? Is he expecting something from me?â
âJust enjoy it for now. Youâll miss it when vacation starts.â
Ekoâs words hit a nerve, but I had no intention of agreeing.
I made a pained expression and slowly lifted my head.
âI feel like Iâm going crazy.â
Eko, with her indifferent face, shook her head.
âWell, itâs not like you have the courage to tell him to stop.â
âBut⊠did I really get properly rejected?â
âYeah.â
At Malloryâs blunt remark, I snapped back irritably. Donât give me weird hope.
âVacationâs almost here anyway, right? Just endure it a little longer.â
âŠWell, thatâs true.
As Mallory patted my shoulder and spoke, I quietly nodded in agreement.
Once vacation ends and the second semester begins, the story in the book will unfold in earnest.
Soon, Senior Noah and Senior Flora will end up together, so his behavior wonât last much longer.
Iâll just think of it as a temporary lucky streak.
âLook at thatâheâs come to pick you up again.â
Without thinking, I looked outside the classroom door and, spotting Senior Noah, I covered my face and groaned.
âWow, heâs handsome.â
Mallory peeked toward the doorway and admired him.
âNo wonder Kate canât live without him.â
âItâs not that extreme.â
I shot a glare at Eko for teasing me, then slowly stood up.
ââŠIâm going.â
âShe really likes him.â
âShe says sheâs just enjoying it.â
Mallory whispered into Ekoâs ear. Dora waved at me and whistled.
Covering my ears, I strode toward the door. AhemâI cleared my throat once, then slowly opened the door.
âYouâve come again.â
Standing by the doorway, Noah noticed me and lifted his head.
âAh.â
His golden eyes behind his glasses sparkled with warmth.
âHello.â
The sight was so dazzling that I squinted.
âDid you understand the class well?â
Look at that gentle smileâitâs maddening.
Itâs not like ice melting into water, so how could someone change so much in just a few days?
Feeling heat rise to my face again, I lifted a book to cover it. A muffled voice slipped out through my clenched teeth.
âYou really didnât have to⊠do this.â
âItâs fine.â
His answer was sharp and immediate.
I let out a small sigh, barely audible.
If you donât like someone, you can just reject their confessionâthereâs no need to feel guilty like this. Itâs not like itâs his fault for not liking me. At this rate, Iâm worried he might get taken advantage of by others.
âSenior, you really donât have to feel sorry.â
Noah blinked and replied,
âIâm not sorry.â
âŠSo perfect people do exist, huh. Actually, heâs a bit of a pushover.
As I wore a somewhat serious expression, a hint of concern appeared in his golden eyes.
âIs something wrong?â
âNo.â
I shook my head vigorously, my hair flying in the air.
Nothingâs wrong. Mentally and physically, Iâm perfectly fine. Peaceful, even.
âGood to hear.â
âYes⊠rightâŠ.â
A brief silence followed. Just then, the girlsâ dormitory came into view, and I was about to say goodbye.
âAh, Iâll be going nowââ
âKATE!â
Someone called my name from the end of the hallway.
Tap, tapâthe sound of heels striking the floor echoed.
âKATE.â
Senior Flora ran toward me and grabbed my shoulders, catching her breath.
âYouâre leaving the club? I heard from Noah.â
Her blue eyes, reflecting me, trembled.
Ah, no⊠I didnât expect it to spread like this.
While I fumbled awkwardly, Noah, slightly flustered, tried to speak.
âFlora, wait aââ
âCould you stay at least this year⊠until the end of this club term?â
Ignoring him completely, Flora clasped my hand tightly, her expression pleading.
âIt might get disbanded because itâs not very popular⊠but I still want to keep going until the end of the year.â
What should I do?
I bit my lip, searching for words.
This was becoming complicated. If I leave and the club gets disbanded, Flora would be sad. Then wouldnât that hurt her?
Flora was a good person. Even aside from that book, I didnât want to make things difficult for her.
âUmâŠ.â
Now that I think about it, suddenly quitting like this might not be right either.
My brain felt like it was overheating.
âEven Noah keeps coming to club meetings regularly despite being busy with other commitments, so he probably has some attachment to it. And Iâve been part of this club for a while too.â
Wow, so thatâs how it is. Senior Noah must really like books. Or maybe itâs because of Flora.
âIâm not forcing you. If you donât want to stay, I wonât stop you.â
Flora said that while I was hesitating, biting my lip.
âBut if you say it like that, it naturally feels like pressure.â
What?
I looked up in shock.
Unbelievably, that came from Noah.
He contradicted Flora?
Because of me?
My head spun in confusion.
âI know. But if Kate leaves tooâŠ,â Flora muttered with a lingering look of regret.
âYou know it would be hard to maintain it.â
In truth, in the early days, many people joined just to see Noah. But Floraâs activities were⊠a bit too advanced and not very entertaining, so everyone eventually quit, leaving only me and Noah.
In the end, the club had been beneficial to me. People would be surprised if they knew how much my literature scores had improved.
I had grown attached to the club too, so leaving it wasnât easy.
âUm⊠ahâŠ.â
Seeing the senior like this made me feel guilty again.
âKATE, Iâve been able to keep this club going because of you. I truly hope you wonât leave.â
Huh?
Blinking in surprise, I listened as Flora turned to Noah.
âYou agree too, right? Itâs better with Kate here.â
âYeah.â
Calm down, you reckless guy.
I held my pounding heart, still trying to process the situation.
âBut whether you stay or leave is Kateâs choice. Itâs best to leave it to Kate.â
Noah continued calmly.
âOf course.â
Flora turned back to me, lowering her brows.
âThink it over during the vacation, okay?â
âY-yesâŠ.â
I stammered in response.
âIâll get going now.â
âAlright, enjoy your vacation! See you next semester.â
Flora, now smiling, waved kindly.
âGoodbye.â
Noah said aloud.
I bowed awkwardly again and quickly left.
âAh.â
I stopped for a moment to tie my shoelaces, which had come undone. From where the seniors were, I heard voices.
âYou two seem to have gotten closer lately.â
Flora asked curiously.
âDid something happen?â
ââŠ!â
A sane person wouldnât go around telling others that I confessed to him.
I looked up at the sky and prayed silently.
There was a pause as Noah seemed to choose his words.
Then he spoke again.
âIâll tell you later if Iâm asked.â
I let out a relieved sigh and rubbed my chest.
What a sensible senior. The best.
Even if Iâd never let him tell anyone, still.
Feeling slightly more at ease, I finished tying my shoelaces and stood upâonly to find Noah looking in my direction.
âUh⊠ah.â
I made an awkward sound and stepped back.
The moment my back hit the pillar, his golden eyes sparkled behind his glasses.
Did I do well?
That was the expression on his face.
My head started spinning again.
