Chapter 31
At that time, a confrontation was unfolding at the inn between the imperial knights and Kalliusâs knights.
Kalliusâs knights wanted to search the floor where the princess was staying, but the imperial knights were enraged, seeing it as an intrusion into their territory.
âNo one other than Her Highnessâs maids has gone up to the fourth floor,â one of them said.
âJust in case, please cooperate and allow us to check,â replied a knight from Kalliusâs side.
âWe already confirmed everything when we came in. Are you saying you donât trust us?â
The imperial knights spoke condescendingly, openly disrespecting Kalliusâs men.
Even Chloeâs maids joined in, siding with the imperial knights.
âHer Highness is asleep, so please stop making a fuss and go back. We already checked her room thoroughly earlier.â
Alex was frustrated.
Even though he knew the real princess was hiding in another room, he couldnât say anything.
Chloe wanted to keep the fact that she had seen a suspicious figure a secret.
âWhat do they mean they checked? They donât even realize the person lying in the princessâs room is a fake.â
The real princess was behind the door Alex was guarding.
Because they had promised to keep her secret, Kalliusâs men, despite having solid evidence â that the princess herself had reported seeing a suspicious figure and requested a search â couldnât press the imperial knights.
All they could say was that one of Kalliusâs men thought he saw something suspicious and that it would be wise to double-check â a weak excuse.
The imperial knights raised their voices.
âWe were watching with eagle eyes! If anyone had gone up to the fourth floor, they couldnât have escaped our notice!â
There were now two possibilities: either the imperial knights had been bribed, or Chloe was lying.
Alex overheard his fellow knights whispering in the hallway.
âItâs strange, isnât it? We were on the third floor, but none of us saw anyone go upstairs.â
âWe were standing guard outside too. If someone had entered from the outside, we wouldâve known right away.â
One of them lowered his voice.
âIsnât it a bit weird? If the princess was telling the truth, why would she hide it from her own maids and knights and only come to us in secret?â
Alex recalled Chloeâs words.
âDo you think Iâm crazy too?â
And what sheâd said about keeping it a secret:
âIf I say something, none of my attendants will believe me. So please, keep it to yourself.â
His companions whispered again.
âMaybe sheâs delusional? Didnât someone say she seemed crazy when we were at the palace? I heard that a few times.â
âI heard it too.â
âMaybe thatâs it?â
Chloe had asked for help, fearing her own people wouldnât believe her. Now, even Kalliusâs men were starting to doubt her.
Andrew, who claimed to have overheard Chloe talking with a maid in the carriage, sneered.
âEither she imagined it or sheâs trying to stir up conflict between the imperial attendants and us.â
âFor what reason?â
âHow should I know? Maybe she gets something out of it.â
âWell, Southerners are always scheming.â
The sentiment was turning against her.
More and more of Kalliusâs men were growing suspicious of Chloe.
Alex scratched his head in confusion.
âShe didnât seem crazy or scheming to meâŚâ
Was he being naĂŻve?
âIs that it?â
Butâ
âIf nothing else, her concern for her lord seemed sincere.â
He couldnât forget her desperate, worried eyes.
âMaybe she has some reason she canât explain.â
While Alex was in turmoil, Kallius arrived at the inn.
Hawick quickly reported the situation.
ââŚIn short, we have yet to catch the intruder. I apologize.â
This kind of matter shouldâve been handled swiftly and discreetly.
Instead, the chaos had given the intruder more time to escape.
Hawick lowered his head, ashamed.
Kallius patted his shoulder.
âAs long as Her Highness is safe.â
The innkeeper, realizing Kallius had arrived, rushed over anxiously.
âMarquis Rodrian, everyone working at this inn is properly vetted. Theyâve all been with us for many years. Youâve visited many times, so you know this, donât you?â
âI apologize for the disturbance.â
âOh, no, not at all. With such a noble guest here, itâs only right to be vigilant. Itâs just⌠please understand we have nothing to do with this incidentâŚâ
The innkeeper looked distressed.
Seeing the man so flustered, Kallius realized he must be hiding something.
âI wonât hold anything against you. Just speak.â
âReally? Well⌠just now, I overheard the staff say they discovered that one of the uniforms was missingâŚâ
Hawick scolded him with a stern face.
âWhy are you only saying this now?!â
âJ-just now! I only just found out. We really donât know how it happenedâŚâ
Kallius ordered Hawick,
âTell the imperial knights about this and push through. I will meet with Her Highness.â
âYes, sir!â
With the news that a servant uniform was missing, and now backed by their lordâs presence, Kalliusâs men forced their way past the imperial knights and up to the fourth floor.
Alex watched, relieved.
âIt wasnât a lie.â
The comrades who had been saying the princess must be mad or scheming just shrugged and followed them upstairs.
They looked indifferent, like, âOh well.â
Alex suddenly felt a surge of emotion.
âThey talked all that nonsense!â
They were his trusted comrades, and Chloe was the enemyâs daughter â yet he didnât know why he felt so indignant on her behalf.
While it was fair to be cautious since Chloe was from the long-rival Iderian imperial family, blindly distrusting and accusing her with hostility wasnât right either.
Everyone seemed to have lost their objectivity because of how much they adored Kallius.
âSo many nannies for our lord, huh?â
Alex failed to realize he was the same kind of frog who forgot he was once a tadpole.
Kallius headed straight to Chloe.
She had been pacing anxiously in the room where she was hiding. Seeing him, she brightened instantly.
âMarquis! Youâre safe!â
Her face lit up with relief. One of Kalliusâs eyebrows twitched.
âWere you worried about me?â
âI heard you went out alone. Was there anything unusual? Anyone suspicious following youâŚ?â
Kallius remembered the assassin attack but shook his head.
âNothing for you to be concerned about.â
There was no need to mention such feeble assassins.
It was almost laughable that Chloe, who once trembled at the idea that he was a man-eating monster, was now worried about him. He even teased her casually.
âShame. If there were people like that, I couldâve had a good meal.â
ââŚ!â
Chloeâs eyes widened.
âC-come to think of it, I suppose that couldâve been⌠a good opportunity for youâŚâ
She mumbled softly under her breath.
âAh, thatâs why everyone was so relaxed!â
âExcuse me?â
Kallius tilted his head, not quite following her train of thought.
But Chloe quickly changed the topic, as if that wasnât important.
âMarquis, I saw a suspicious person. I know who he is. He isââ
Just then, a sharp scream echoed from the fourth floor. It was a womanâs voice.
Chloeâs face went pale.
âLamia!â
Kalliusâs men heard the scream just as they had shoved aside the imperial knights and maids and reached the fourth floor.
âThatâs Her Highnessâs room!â
They all rushed toward it, but the door was locked.
Using their bulk, Kalliusâs men easily broke it down.
Inside the room, only Lamia stood, covered in blood. No one else was in sight.
She was supposed to maintain the illusion of being Chloe with magic, but in her panic, she had reverted to her original appearance.
A knight hurriedly asked,
âWhere did he go?!â
Lamia, visibly shaken, pointed at the shattered window.
âHe jumped out the window!â
Hawick burst in and looked out the window.
At that moment, someone shouted from below.
âWe caught him!â
The men conducting the outside search had pinned down a man and were waving.
âAh, thank goodness,â Lamia sighed in relief.
âThat bastard⌠ugh!â
Just as she cursed, she collapsed.
Blood trickled down her arm and soaked into the carpet.
Blood was already splattered all around the room.
Hawick rushed to her side and shouted to the others,
âGet a doctor! We have a wounded woman!â
