Chapter 28 â The Empress Dowager and the Crown Prince
âYou! You call yourselves administrators? You call yourselves judges?!â
Whack! Whack! Whack!
The rolled-up bundle of papers rose and fell like a hammer on the judgesâ heads.
âHow could you sleep peacefully after doing such filthy, disgraceful things?! Huh?! Answer me!!â
The presiding judge, helpless and panicked, slipped right out of his chair and onto the floor.
âY-your Majesty, please forgive usâ!â
âSince when did this happen?! Since when did the holy court of law turn into a garbage pit?!â
Even after the three judges had collapsed in a heap, the Empress Dowager was still fuming, her chest heaving with anger.
Beside me, Joe muttered blankly,
âWhat⌠what am I even looking at right now?â
I nodded in silent agreement.
Thudâ
Suddenly, someone tapped my left shoulder.
I turned around in surprise.
A person wearing a robe embroidered with the Imperial crest was sitting next to meâsomeone who definitely hadnât been there before.
Judging by his small frame, he looked just a few years older than me.
âUh⌠whoâ?â
Before I could finish my question, the boy calmly pulled back his hood.
My mouth dropped open.
âCrown Prince Tian!â
ââŚâ
âYour Highness!â
Joe jumped to his feet so fast he nearly tripped over himself.
âI-I greet His Imperial Highness, the Crown Prince!â
The others in the observation seats followed suit, bowing their heads in a flurry of motion.
Only I remained seated, staring straight at Tian.
âWait a secondâwhy did he grow so much?!â
Just three months ago, heâd been barely taller than me!
âTian?â I blinked in confusion.
Thatâs when he said, in a calm, steady voice,
âAnnelia.â
I forgot to respond for a second.
âYour name is Annelia, right?â
âUh⌠yes.â
âYou didnât tell me last time, so I couldnât write you a letter.â
My eyes went wide.
A letter? He wanted to write me a letter?
We werenât even that close!
But as if reading my thoughts, Tian continued casually,
âI did what you told me to do.â
ââŚ?â
âAnd everything turned out just like you said it would.â
Ah.
That was it.
Heâd followed my advice and gone to the Empress Dowager for help.
Which also meant she was protecting him now.
Now that I looked closer, Tian looked much healthier than beforeâhis cheeks werenât hollow anymore, and heâd grown taller, too.
Like someone whoâd finally been eating and sleeping properly.
I was about to tell him heâd done well, but then he said quietly,
âI wanted to thank you, but⌠Iâve been busy with a lot of things.â
I waved my hands quickly.
âOh, no, Your Highness! It was nothing!â
ââŚStill,â he said softly, âI wanted to see you.â
Gasp.
My words caught in my throat.
ââŚHe wanted to see me?â
Even though he was staring straight at me, I noticed the tips of his ears turning faintly pink.
Then I felt a sudden prickling on the back of my neck.
I turned my head slightlyâand sure enoughâ
Sharon Abner, Wendel, Joe, and half the courtroom, including the Empress Dowager herself, were all staring right at us.
Oh no.
***
âDonât worry,â said the Empress Dowager later that day, sipping her tea elegantly. âIâve already ordered the Coel family to return every coin they stole. With interest, mind youâadjusted for inflation over the past twelve years. And theyâll pay compensation on top of that.â
I swallowed nervously.
Beside me, Sharon Abner spoke in a quiet, strained voice.
ââŚI am deeply grateful, Your Majesty.â
The Empress Dowager clicked her tongue and set her teacup down with a soft clink.
âYouâve taken over the dukedom with such pride, yet look at this mess! Miraena would be thrilled to see you now.â
Miraenaâthat was the name of the late Empress, the one who had publicly supported Sharon when she inherited the title of Duchess Abner.
That support had been one of the main reasons Sharon managed to survive politically at the time.
âAnd another thingâhow could you let them steal that much money without realizing it?â
ââŚâ
âAnd during the trial! When those filthy judges started spewing nonsense, you shouldâve flipped the whole table over!â
Her booming voice made me flinch.
Not because I was scaredâdefinitely not!âjust⌠a little tense, thatâs all.
I stared down at my cup of juice, holding it tightly in both hands, trying not to make eye contact.
Then, the Empress Dowager cleared her throat.
âHmph. On second thought, flipping the table might not have been the best idea.â
Her tone softened slightly.
I dared to glance upâand instantly froze.
She was smiling right at me.
âOf course, I canât do something so shocking, can I? Iâd frighten this adorable child.â
Then she laughed heartily, her eyes bright with amusement.
She leaned forward slightly, still holding her teacup.
âSo, youâre Annelia.â
âY-yes, Your Majesty!â
My words came out all tangled.
Iâd never been this close to a royal family member before.
âThe Crown Prince is just a kid, so that was fineâbut the Empress DowagerâŚâ
Even when she sat still, she radiated this overwhelming royal authority.
âOur Tian has missed you terribly,â she said fondly. âHe says youâre his dearest friend.â
That made Sharon glance at me, eyebrows raised.
It was understandableâafter all, Iâd only been at the Abner estate for three months.
Being called the Crown Princeâs dearest friend sounded⌠unlikely.
I smiled awkwardly and stammered,
âUh, w-well, His Highness visited the Abner estate once, and we, um⌠played for a bitâŚâ
The Empress Dowagerâs eyes widened.
âOh? And what did you play?â
My mind went blank.
I shot Tian a desperate look, silently begging for helpâ
but he just kept sipping his juice calmly, pretending not to notice.
âI, uh⌠we shared some dried meatâŚâ
I couldnât exactly mention that Iâd accidentally caused a huge scene back then.
ââŚAnd, um, we talked about⌠worries. Yeah, like⌠advice!â
âAdvice?â The Empress Dowagerâs face lit up. âThen you gave our Tian some guidance, did you? Iâve heard youâre quite clever.â
âI, umâŚâ
My brain spun desperately until I blurted out,
âW-we talked about leadership! How to guide the people wisely as the future emperor!â
âTell her the truth.â
Tian set his juice down with a soft clink.
âYou told me to tell Grandmother about the servantâs cruelty,â he said calmly.
I froze.
âI used to be afraid of Jacques, but after you told me that, I found the courage to speak to Grandmother.â
ââŚâ
âAfter Mother passed away, I felt completely alone.â
ââŚâ
âBut you told me I wasnât. You said Grandmother would listen to meâand you were right.â
His red eyes were steady and sincere.
ââŚHa! Hahahaha!â
The Empress Dowager burst out laughing.
Then she reached over and patted Tianâs shoulder gently before turning her gaze to me.
âTruly remarkable. This old woman owes you a great debt, child.â
ââŚâ
âI also heard you shielded our Tian when that wretched servant tried to strike him.â
I blinked in shock, glancing between the Empress Dowager and the Crown Prince.
âWaitâI told him to go tell her, sure, but⌠he told her everything?â
Iâd thought he was the quiet, stoic typeâmaybe a little shyâ
but apparently he was also surprisingly open when it came to me!
Beside me, Sharon Abner finally spoke.
âIs that true?â
When I turned to look, she was watching me with a stunned expression.
I scratched my cheek awkwardly.
âY-yesâŚâ
âThe day Empress Karin visited, then. Why didnât you say anything?â
âI, um⌠I didnât think it was that big of a dealâŚâ
A lie, of course.
Meeting the Crown Prince was a very big deal.
But back then, I didnât want to cause any trouble in the Abner mansion,
so Iâd decided to keep it secret.
âHow precious!â The Empress Dowager beamed. âSharon, how on earth did a stoic woman like you end up with such an adorable child by your side?â
Sharon didnât reply. She just quietly took a sip of her tea.
The Empress Dowager turned her attention back to me.
âWhen I first heard the story, I couldnât believe it. Tell me, dear, how old are you again?â
âIâm four, Your Majesty.â
âFour?!â
The Empress Dowager looked genuinely shocked.
I quickly added, âBut Iâll be five in a few days!â
âAh, I see!â she said, nodding. âThen we must have a birthday celebration!â
I blinked.
âA⌠birthday party?â
Come to think of it, Iâd never actually had a proper birthday party before.
Even when I was the Longton familyâs adopted daughter,
birthdays were quiet dinners at most.
âHiana always had big parties⌠I didnât realize it back then, but we were so different, werenât we?â
Feeling a little awkward, I mumbled,
âUm, I donât think I need a birthday partyâŚâ
âI was already planning one,â Sharon said flatly, cutting me off. âA grand one.â
The Empress Dowager frowned in mock disappointment.
âOh dear! If you hadnât planned anything, I wouldâve hosted it in the Imperial Palace myself!â
