Chapter 43
Knock knockâ
I flinched in surprise at the sudden knock on the door and instinctively pulled away from him.
The door burst open, and a flood of people with flustered faces came rushing in.
Seriously, could the timing be any worse?
I almost shouted at all of them to get out.
Couldnât they have come just five minutes later? Just five!
âOh, heavens. Ribel!â
At the front of the group was my mother, followed by my father and older brother… and behind them came Bestie, Eclat, even the butler.
My mother, who looked like she had already cried a bucket of tears, walked toward me supported by my father.
âMy poor Ribel, oh my goodness. How could this happenâŚâ
âMother.â
She grabbed my hand and began sobbing.
But Mother, Iâm the one who really wants to cry right now.
After gently comforting her, I looked toward where Zerlach was standing.
His cheeks were unusually flushed. When our eyes met, he gave a faint, subtle smile.
Maybe… he was thinking the same thing I was.
âOur Ribelâs face is so gaunt. Oh, dear heavensâŚâ
âIâm fine. Really, itâs nothing.â
Itâs just that my heart feels a bit bitter right now.
ââNothing,â she says! Dear, look at Ribelâs wrist!â
âThis is unbelievableâŚâ
My fatherâs face turned bright red as he saw my wrist, covered in bruises.
âTo think someone did this to my daughter, to her lovely wristâŚâ
âFather.â
Unable to hold back his emotions, he covered his mouth with his hand. While he turned away to wipe his tears, Eclat stepped closer.
Her face looked as if sheâd lost a whole country.
âMy lady, Iâm so sorry. Itâs all my fault.â
âEclat, what are you saying?â
âI shouldâve taken better care of you. I shouldnât have gone to the festival and left you alone while you were sick. Iâm so sorry, my lady.â
Then she dropped to her knees and began to wail.
Wow⌠what is even happening right now?
The only thing you all should be sorry for is coming in way too early.
Thatâs all.
âEclat, donât say that. You didnât do anything wrong. Iâm the one who went out instead of staying home. Why should you be apologizing? Iâm sorry. Itâs my fault.â
âMy ladyâŚâ
âIâm sorry for making everyone worry. But Iâm really okay now. So please donât cry anymore.â
After repeating âIâm okayâ about a hundred timesâperhaps because Iâd only just woken up, or maybe because I was finally starting to relaxâfatigue began to set in.
When I rubbed my eyes a couple of times, Zerlach seemed to notice and cleared his throat.
âRibel should get some rest now.â
At his words, my father nodded and gently grasped my motherâs shoulder.
âYes, heâs right. Thatâs best.â
âRibel, should I stay here with you?â
My mother held my hand tightly and asked. I tried to respond, but my father quietly murmured, putting a little pressure on her shoulder.
âNo, dear. If we leave, Ribel can rest more comfortably.â
âReally? Ribel, would it be better if I left?â
âThatâs enough, thatâs enough. Letâs go now.â
âRibel, Iâll be close by. If you need anything, just call for me, alright?â
Once my mother stepped back, the doctor standing at the very back finally stepped forward.
âI was worried, but Iâm glad you regained consciousness, my lady.â
He examined my wrist and applied ointment to a small wound on my fingertip.
âBut please, donât move for the next few days and get complete rest.â
âYes, I understand.â
âNow⌠whoâs the ladyâs maid?â
When the doctor asked, Eclat quickly raised her hand.
âThat would be me.â
âIâll prepare some medicine to help her recover her strength. Make sure she takes it twice a day. And start her on soft foods.â
âYes, understood.â
As Eclat nodded, Zerlach suddenly interjected.
âLeave the medicine here. Ribel will be staying here until sheâs fully recovered.â
âAhâŚâ
At that moment, my eyes met Eclatâs. She scrunched her nose and pretended to giggle. I tightly pressed my lips together and turned away.
âWell then, letâs give Ribel some time to rest.â
After the tearful and chaotic reunion finally ended, I was alone again.
Zerlach tried to stay by my side, but he was being called to a dozen different places. The festival was still in full swing, after all.
He kept turning away his aides, who showed up every three minutes.
If I hadnât stepped in and sent him off myself, the poor aide wouldâve had to knock on the door at least a hundred times.
Now alone again, I quietly fell into thought.
âI escaped that hellish situation⌠but now what?â
The real problem was what came next.
What would happen if thirteen days passed just like this?
I carefully sat up.
If only I could go back to the beginning⌠I feel like I could do things right this time.
As I tried to calm my growing anxiety, someone gently knocked on the door.
âYes?â
A woman in a cloak entered as the door opened.
âWhoâŚ?â
I watched her closely as she walked toward me, puzzled.
âMy lady.â
The woman smiled gently, then pulled back her hood to reveal her face.
It was Elome Burster, Eclatâs friend.
Elome was a maid of the Shurane Viscountâs household and somewhat of a gossip queen in this story.
It wouldnât be an exaggeration to say every bit of society news came out of her mouth. She was a clever girl who seemed to know everything.
But I had no connection to the Shurane Viscount family. I knew there was a girl my age in their household, but weâd only seen each other in passing.
If anything connected us, it would be that Elome and Eclat were very close friends.
Thatâs why her visit felt unexpectedâand unnatural.
âI was so shocked to hear you were kidnapped. Are you feeling better now?â
âIâm fine. Thanks for your concern.â
âIâm glad to hear that.â
She smiled warmly.
I appreciated her kindness, but honestly, it felt a bit awkward.
âDid she come to see Eclat?â
The silence between us stretched awkwardly. Unable to bear it, I spoke first.
âEclat was just here earlier but had to step out.â
âThank you, but actually, I came today to see you, my lady.â
âMe?â
âThereâs something I really need to tell you.â
Elomeâs expression grew unusually serious.
I blinked, wondering what she wanted to say. Then, with her hands clasped, she began to speak demurely.
âIâm sorry, my lady.â
ââŚ?â
Sorry for what?
She held her lips tightly shut, as if debating whether to continue.
âIâm truly sorry.â
Then she pulled her hood back over her head.
âElome, whatâs going on?â
ââŚâŚâ
âThereâs nothing for you to apologize for.â
Since she was close to Eclat, I wondered if something had happened between them. But if that were the case, wouldnât it be something to sort out with Eclat?
She didnât seem like she was joking.
She was deadly seriousâand even looked a little sad.
âElome, whatâs going on?â
âIâm sorry, but I canât tell you.â
âWhat?â
âBut my lady, no fate is unchangeable.â
Okay⌠what kind of cryptic talk is this now?
She apologized and now sheâs talking about fate?
âIf thatâs how you truly feel, youâll be able to overcome it and find a way.â
âElome, I really have no idea what youâre talking about. Or maybe Iâm too sick to understand anything right now?â
I looked at her with a bewildered expression, but she only shook her head slowly.
âEither way, it wonât be all bad.â
ââŚâŚâ
âI canât help you directly, but Iâll be rooting for you from afar.â
âElome, I donât know whatâs going on⌠but canât you help me?â
My sudden plea seemed to catch her off guard.
âPlease help me. If thereâs something you can do.â
âMy ladyâŚâ
âI donât know whatâs happening, but I feel like I have to say this right now. Elome, donât just apologizeâplease help me. Okay?â
âIâm sorry, my lady.â
But with that, Elome turned and quickly left the room.
ââŚ.â
For a while, I could only stare blankly at the door where she had disappeared.
