Chapter 02
The answer was surprisingly simple.
āIf you understand the trends, exams get easier.ā
I wouldnāt have known before, but now I did. I looked again at the tattered banner. It didnāt seem like much, but the āFriends Entertainment Quarterly Auditionā actually contained quite a bit of information.
āFirst, auditions are held every quarter.ā
They recruit trainees, which means spots open up just as often.
āSecond, itās common enough that they reuse banners.ā
The banner was worn out. That meant auditions were held regularly, with plenty of applicants.
āWell, Friends Entertainment is a good company.ā
They had quite a few major idol groups. And most of them even renewed their contracts after expiration. Of course, there had been some controversies.
āThe biggest one was Zenith, right?ā
For a moment, his face flashed through my mind.
āDamn it. Kang Minje.ā
Right. That bastard was here. His debut had been in the idol group āZenithā under Friends Entertainment. A chill ran down the back of my neck.
āKang Minje, you asshole.ā
I stretched out my legs. Old memories swirled in my head before scattering into nothing. I muttered quietly.
āSo if I keep going like this⦠Iāll end up in the same group as that guy?ā
A curse slipped out. I let out a small breath. Well, that was something to think about after passing. But it was also something Iād have to accept.
Meeting him. Maybe even being in the same group.
āIf I hate it, I can just get up and leave.ā
I immediately shook my head.
āNo. Thatās not it.ā
This was the chance to become the idol I had dreamed of since I was young. And this place was good.
āBeing a trainee at Friends Entertainment carries weight.ā
Even if I ended up elsewhere, just having been a trainee here would help.
āFocus on one thing.ā
I set my goal clearly.
āI want to become a top idol.ā
I wanted to succeed. I was desperate enough to do anything for it. And for that, I needed this company.
āKang Minje is a problem, but Iāll think about that later. What matters is passing.ā
I looked around again. Quite a few numbers had already been called. The audition pace wasnāt too fast or too slow.
That was when I heard a frivolous voice from behind.
āAre you number 119?ā
I quietly checked the number pinned to my jacket. I hadnāt even noticed before. Ah, so I was 119.
I raised my head. A guy with bleached yellow hair and a shallow-looking face grinned at me.
āIām 118.ā
He sure liked saying things no one asked. I deliberately smiled sweetly.
āWhat luck.ā
I recognized him.
āLee Kyungbae. He later went by the stage name Lee Kyung.ā
A memory flickered.
We had met at a movie audition beforeāhe was trying out for a supporting role as the protagonistās friend. As he passed me, he had said:
āāWhat a joke, having to audition with someone like this.ā
And now we met again here.
I smiled wider.
You walked right into this one, bastard.
Unaware of my thoughts, he leaned closer and asked,
āHow old are you?ā
āIām in my second year of middle school.ā
āYouāre young. Iām a first-year in high school.ā
Wasnāt that young too?
āIām freaking out because I started late. These days trainees start from elementary school.ā
Like gifted education, I guess. Makes sense. Money draws people in. If you have talent, starting early isnāt a bad idea.
āI really need to pass.ā
He grumbled while adjusting his denim jacket. Despite being annoying, he looked a bit cuteāprobably because he was still young.
āWell, if this doesnāt work out, my dad said heād just start a company for me. So Iāll just go with that.ā
Take back the ācuteā part. What the hell?
āPeople really donāt change.ā
So he was rotten from the start. Whether that yellow came from wealth or decay, Iād find out laterābut he sure was consistent.
āThere was a rumor he bought that movie role with moneyā¦ā
Guess that was true.
I smiled brightly.
If that was the case, I had nothing to hold back.
āCan I ask your name, hyung?ā
āHuh? Iām Lee Kyung.ā
Come on, hyung. Your real name is Lee Kyungbae.
āIām Cha Dowon.ā
Now that introductions were doneā¦
āWould you like to become my stepping stone?ā
Our numbers were close, so weād likely enter together. Whether this audition was absolute or relative evaluation, having someone to compare against wasnāt bad.
āArrogant idiots fall quickly.ā
He patted my shoulder.
āWhich audition is this for you?ā
āMy first.ā
āReally? Iāve done a lot, and you have to stand out. Youāve gotta be flashy to get noticed.ā
I smiled.
āNo way.ā
The judges saw hundreds every quarter. Sure, some companies liked flashy peopleābut not Friends Entertainment.
āThey prefer sincerity, if I remember right.ā
Thatās why their artists tended to have quiet personal lives. Of course, there were always exceptions.
āReally?ā
āYeah!ā
Then why was he saying this?
āTrying to mess with me?ā
Cute, honestly.
Thenā
āDamn it.ā
I remembered.
Ten years ago⦠I had believed those exact words.
āUnbelievable.ā
My face burned. I had been so naĆÆve.
I looked at him again. Lee Kyungbae smirked, clearly pleased.
āPeople like you deserve consequences.ā
So it was you.
The reason I gave up on becoming an idol.
Well, I had my share of blame tooābut still.
Things were different now.
āHow should I screw him over properly?ā
Just as I was thinking, a staff member gestured. It was time.
Too bad. Not enough time.
I smiled at him.
āNervous, hyung?ā
He walked stiffly.
āI-Iām not nervous at all.ā
He was stuttering. Sure, not nervous.
Didnāt matter to me. The more shaken he was, the better for me.
I slightly lowered my head.
Back then, I had been shaking like crazy.
āMaybe because Iāve done this beforeā¦ā
I wasnāt nervous at all. I was excited.
Like stepping onto a stage meant just for me.
A breeze brushed past my neck.
āFeels like someoneās pushing me forward.ā
I lifted my head.
Iām not failing this time.
Letās do this, Cha Dowon.
The wind answered again. My steps felt lighter.
The audition room was simpler than expected.
Just chairs and a long table.
āThe CEO and staff, I guess.ā
Nothing specialā
Until I saw the person at the far end.
A white cap. Sunglasses.
But I recognized him instantly.
āWhy is he here?ā
Kang Minje.
My fists clenched.
I wanted to rush over and punch him.
āNo.ā
I took a deep breath.
If I did that, Iād be thrown outāand never return.
āCalm down.ā
I already knew.
He would debut here. Successfully.
āThat group did well.ā
If theyād lasted a few more years, they couldāve ridden the Korean Wave even higher.
āBut they disbanded so suddenlyā¦ā
I sat down as instructed, recalling Zenith.
āThey were good.ā
Great songs. Solid concept.
They were everywhere at one point.
āSo why did they fail?ā
I glanced at Minje.
He looked calm, observing everyone.
āThere was a lot of noise when they disbanded.ā
I remembered an interview.
āāThe company tried to build a group that suited Minje hyung.ā
A departing member had smiled bitterly.
āāThey openly searched for a ācrazy maknaeā to match a ārational leader.ā Obviously, they couldnāt find one. So they just debuted trainees. That was us.ā
āāEverything revolved around Minjeāmusic, concept, everything. I want my own place.ā
I smiled.
That interview revealed a lot.
FirstāMinje was the leader, but couldnāt manage the group.
āMakes sense.ā
Secondāthe group revolved around him.
āWhich means⦠joining his group guarantees success.ā
I glanced at him again.
āIf you use me⦠Iāll use you too.ā
Sleeping with the enemy.
āAs long as I donāt trust you.ā
Right, Minje hyung?
This time, I wonāt trust you.
Weāve got a lot to settle.
I smiled and sat upright.
The audition continued.
A participant sang a ballad.
āThirdāwhat theyāre looking for is a crazy maknae.ā
I smiled.
āPerfect.ā
Could I act crazy?
Of course.
āI didnāt spend years in theater for nothing.ā
Soā
āI just need to play the crazy maknae.ā
Soon, the song ended.
āNumber 118, what will you do?ā
Lee Kyungbae stood.
āIāll dance!ā
āWhat song?ā
āYumiās Shooting.ā
Huh?
That was⦠unexpected.
A female solo artistās song? And that one?
āZombie concept⦠pretty bizarre.ā
I had learned that dance before. It wasnāt easy.
He started dancing.
It was⦠awful.
Way too exaggerated.
Embarrassing.
āThatās something Yumi can pull offānot you.ā
He completely missed the emotion.
āThis isnāt a comedy stage.ā
The judges looked unimpressed.
I glanced at him.
āHe self-destructed before I even did anything.ā
Seriouslyā¦
What was he thinking?
This guy is unbelievably stupid.
