Chapter 23
Fountain Pen
2024.02.23.
âCome on, thereâs nothing to figure out. The answerâs already here.â
Nigel took the black letter from Allenâs hands and carefully read it aloud.
âAt the bottom, it says that if the invitationâs owner signs it personally, it can be transferred to someone else. Hurry up and sign it, Allen.â
Nigel pointed to a suitable blank space at the bottom of the invitation for a signature.
Click.
He even pulled a fountain pen from the drawer, the kind with â19th Anniversary of the Merchant Guildâ engraved on it, and handed it over.
âWait⌠hold on. I donât understand⌠Nigel, youâ?â
Allenâs face twisted slightly.
âWhat is it?â
âAllenâŚ?â
Noah tilted his head to the right.
ââŚYouâre acting like this because Iâm weak, right?â
ââŚWhat?â
âBecause I⌠have no strength, am unreliable, so youâre planning to go with Noah alone.â
âWhy bring that up all of a sudden?â
A heavy sigh escaped.
ââŚAm I wrong?â
Allen pressed his lips together.
âNope, youâre wrong.â
Nigel raised his hand and pointed at the wall behind Allen. Allen and Noah turned their heads.
âSee? The time.â
The finely carved grandfather clockâs hands were at seven and one.
â7:05âŚâ
Allen murmured softly.
âEven if we go to Histon now, rescue Andy, and leave immediately, we wonât make curfew.â
âAnd thatâs⌠important?â
âImportant.â
Nigel immediately cut off Allenâs words.
âAllen, Noah, you go to Sienia first. Itâs not the weekend; you have classes right away.â
âSo, youâre saying⌠youâre going to Histon alone, without us?â
Nigel nodded. Without hesitation.
âBut Nigel, it could be dangerous.â
âThatâs exactly my point. Itâs dangerous, so why do you want to come along?â
âNigelâŚ!â
Allen spoke reproachfully.
âDonât get involved unnecessarily and just go. This doesnât concern you.â
ââŚDoesnât concern me?â
âYes, youâve never met Andy before.â
âNigel⌠thatâs not what I meant.â
Allen frowned and closed his eyes.
âI agree with Allen, too.â
ââŚThen what?â
Nigel said curtly, crossing his arms.
âYouâre just worried, dummy. Good at studying, but clueless about things like thisâŚâ
Ah.
Nigelâs complicated thoughts cleared like a freshly blank canvas.
Now he noticed Allen and Noahâs faces.
Allenâs restless eyes.
Noahâs downturned mouth.
âDidnât want to get too close with them⌠but it seems that ship has already sailed.â
Sighing deeply, Nigel lifted his head.
He realized that what he had meant to just dip a toe into had already dragged him in completely.
ââŚAre you sure itâs okay even if we get penalized?â
Allen and Noahâs eyes met in midair. Their mouths lifted in unison.
âDo you think I care about a little penalty? I came here to make friends, anyway.â
Allen slung an arm over Nigelâs shoulder.
âThatâs impressive.â
Nigel chuckled lightly.
âSo, what about the incomplete invitation?â
ââŚIâve got a way.â
Nigelâs eyes gleamed meaningfully.
âHmmm~â
For three years, the man had been running a small corner shop selling miscellaneous magical tools on the outskirts of the capital. Lately, heâd found himself humming.
It was thanks to the spiky-haired boy who, just a few weeks ago, had boosted the shopâs sales for two months in a single day.
The boy bought anything that looked even slightly interesting to him, without a second thought, allowing the man to clear out old stock, even items whose functionality he hadnât tested.
He felt a tiny bit guilty toward the boy, but so what.
If the boy knew the mountain of debts he still owed the guild, heâd probably feel sorry for him instead.
âHmmm~ Maybe heâll come today too?â
Excluding the girl who had been with him.
She had scowled at him when he used a magical tool wrong, asking repeatedly about its duration. Just thinking about it made his skin crawl.
And the silver-haired noble boyâclearly from a distinguished family.
When the girl glared at him, the noble boyâs usual smile stiffened into a serious gaze.
Crushed by their presence, he couldnât say another word to the spiky-haired boy.
âUgh, stop thinking bad thoughts! Only good thoughts bring money!!â
Shaking his head vigorously as if chasing away the bad energy, he continued.
ââŚ!â
Then he saw him.
From the alley, the unforgettable spiky-haired head appeared.
âOf courseâŚ!â
The man clapped once.
He had felt like clearing out the stock today, and now he knew whyâŚ
He silently thanked the goddess Kyrelia for giving him such a true spring day, rubbing his hands until they were warm.
âThis time, Iâll sell three monthsâ worth of stock!â
The determined man greeted the spiky-haired boy warmly.
âYouâre here againâŚ.â
âŚYou guys again!
The cheerful tone suddenly sank.
Behind the spiky-haired boy stood the same scowling girl and the silver-haired noble boy.
The girl quickly scanned the shop with sharp eyes.
Bah, that wasnât important now. The paying customer is the guest, not the observer.
He approached the spiky-haired boy with a big smile.
âSir, you joined the Solef Merchant Guild, right?â
But the boy said something entirely unexpected.
ââŚYes? Yes⌠yes. All merchants in Solef join the guild, of course.â
âŚWhat?
âŚNo! Donât doubt the easy prey! If I falter here, I fail the test! Just sell something, anything!
âSir, the new stock isââ
âŚYes!
The boyâs lips curved slightly upward. Halfway there!
âOh, I didnât come to buy today, just to ask something.â
âŚWhat? Whatâs this kid going to do in the merchant guild?
âYes, yes. Feel free to speak.â
The man hid his excitement behind a forced smile.
âYou know, selling defective items to customers is a one-gold fine per transaction, right?â
âWhatâŚ?â
The spiky-haired boy silently pulled a golden badge from his pocket.
ââŚ?!â
A large golden âEâ was engraved on it. The man recognized it from gossip.
âSo, does that mean you, sir, in the guildââ
âYes, thatâs right. Iâm the operator.â
The boy smiled innocently.
âIâm a bit busy now. Shall we settle this quickly, sir?â
The girl and the silver-haired noble boy on either side quietly extended their hands.
With that same terrifying, dreamlike intensity in their eyes.
Clatter. Clatter.
âIs this really okay, Nigel? The man did sell defective items, but we had fun with them before.â
In the carriage, watching Nigel carrying a pile of magical tools, including the invisibility tool, Allen pursed his lips.
âYou did a good job acting the way I told you to.â
Nigel said.
âHonestly, it was fun. Itâs fascinating how everything flowed exactly as you said.â
âBut how did you know about the guildâs fines, even if you knew Allen was an operator?â
Noah asked, eyes full of doubt.
âI just guessed.â
Nigel said nonchalantly.
âWhat?â
âYes?â
The two stared, wide-eyed.
âA greedy fool like him wouldnât know the guild rules. I thought if I pressured him with money, heâd back down immediately.â
Nigel shrugged.
âWhy, you thought Iâd know everything?â
Seeing them blankly staring, Nigel chuckled and tossed something to Allen and Noah each.
âImportant stuff, so keep it safe.â
âWhat is this?â
Noah examined a magical tool shaped like an ear.
âUh⌠it feels so soft. Whatâs this pus-like thingâŚ?â
A red button was on the earlobe.
ââŚIs there no other option?â
The tool was aesthetically unbearable to Allen, failing even a preliminary evaluation.
Nigel ignored Allenâs complaint and explained.
âPress the earlobe button and use the communication stone, and only we can hear each other. In short, itâs a portable soundproof device. Since itâs from that charlatan, it might break anytime, but it should hold for tonight.â
âBut Nigel, you donât have a communication stone, right?â
SwooshâŚ
Nigel proudly pulled one from his coat and shook it.
âI borrowed it from the charlatan. âŚWeâll return it once we find Andy, so relax everyone.â
ââŚOf course, I knew that.â
âMe too!â
Noah and Allen hurriedly covered their expressions and nodded.
By now, the carriage had stopped moving.
A tense atmosphere filled the air.
âNoah, do you have a dagger?â
âYes, two.â
Noah immediately handed them over.
Nigel took one and passed a dagger to Allen.
Allenâs hand trembled slightly as he took it.
âAllen, keep it safe. Not necessarily to use, but for emergencies.â
âUh⌠got it.â
Allen carefully tucked the dagger away.
âEveryone rememberâour goal is to find Andy and leave. Allen, use the invisibility tool on me.â
