He turned around and saw me, surprised, but instantly smiled: “Sister, what are you doing here? Didn’t I tell you not to rush over?”

Ji Zhihau didn’t really want me to come to the construction site because he knew that if I saw Yu’s father and mother, and encountered Yu Jin, there would be even more gossip. He didn’t want me to face any more criticism.

“I was worried about you… but I was even more worried you might get hurt.” I saw that Ji Zhihau wasn’t injured and his eyes were fine, which made me slightly relieved. Then, puzzled, I asked, “When I first came, what were they saying… retribution, serves you right? It seemed like… like someone went blind?”

“Mm.” Ji Zhihau’s reply was dismissive, and I realized this matter wasn’t simple.

I wanted to ask more, but seeing his pale expression, I decided not to push further. Yet from the moment I arrived at the site, I found it strange that I hadn’t seen any of the Yu family members.

I shook my head, checked my phone for messages, and saw that online comments were still attacking the Yu and Fang families.

“Sis, I want to rest for a while. You should go out first,” Ji Zhihau said, laying his head on the table. He really did look exhausted, so I didn’t want to disturb him, though I was still curious about what had happened.

I stepped outside and planned to find some of the workers on site to ask exactly what had happened during the Yu family incident.

I saw Xiao Jiang, who usually drank with Ji Zhihau, idle. I quickly ran over.

He wasn’t surprised to see me and actually came to greet me.

“Sis, what are you doing here? Ji Zhihau is in the workers’ rest room—why didn’t you go find him?” Xiao Jiang said. Looking at his sunburned, wind-chapped face, I felt a pang in my heart. Such good boys, yet because of their poor families, they could only do this kind of hard, exhausting labor. Social injustice…

I forced a smile: “Ah, Ji Zhihau is resting inside, and I didn’t want to disturb him. But he also didn’t tell me what happened. I was afraid he got hurt. Were you at the scene?”

Xiao Jiang nodded thoughtfully. He took my hand and led me to a more secluded corner. He took off his dust-covered gloves and brushed the dirt off his clothes, careful not to dirty me. I told him it was fine, but he smiled awkwardly.

Xiao Jiang said, “Sister, don’t worry. Ji Zhihau didn’t get hurt at all, and he didn’t do anything reckless. It was the Yu family who got it really bad this time.”

“Really bad? What happened?” I asked in confusion.

“That older woman in the Yu family, you know, Yu Jin’s mom—she’s clearly a sly, malicious person. Well… she went blind!” Xiao Jiang said, grinning.

I was shocked. Yu Jin’s mother… he must mean her. She went blind? I was at a loss and quickly asked, “How did she go blind? Did Ji Zhihau hit her?!”

I was afraid that Ji Zhihau might have impulsively hit Yu’s mother in the eye because he really is hot-headed and quick to act. If he had caused her to go blind… that would mean legal trouble, maybe even prison!

I didn’t dare think further, nor listen to what Xiao Jiang would say next.

Suddenly, the door to the workers’ rest room was thrown open with a “BANG!” Ji Zhihau stormed out angrily, grabbed me, and pulled me into the room.

Xiao Jiang followed and shut the door.

“You little Jiang, what were you telling my sister? Didn’t you see you scared her!”

Ji Zhihau was furious, thinking Xiao Jiang had been frightening me. But Xiao Jiang hadn’t told a ghost story—it was actually scarier than one.

“If you don’t want Xiao Jiang scaring me, then tell me exactly what happened. Only then can I stop worrying about you,” I said seriously, looking into Ji Zhihau’s eyes.

Ji Zhihau could only shrug, sit down, and begin telling me what had happened.
