Chapter – 58
A lot happened, but the girlsâ school cultural festival had come to an end. Maybe because of that, everyone started cleaning up and putting things away. I, of course, wasnât an exception and joined in the cleaning.
As I was helping, Takanashi-san spoke to me.
âUm⊠Kaede-kun.â
âWhat is it, Takanashi-san?â
âThank you for helping out with so many things today.â
âOh, no⊠Itâs actually me who might have caused troubleâŠâ
âTrouble? No, not at all⊠I canât believe you not only helped at the cafĂ© but also with cleaning⊠I donât even know how to thank youââ
âDonât worry about it. Iâm kind of⊠a free person anyway.â
I said that with a smile. Even if I went home now, the only thing Iâd do is make dinner and eat it, so helping out like this was no trouble at all.
âI heard from Nishida-san, but youâre really good at cooking and cleaning.â
âThatâs not really true. I just make do with whatever ingredients I have.â
âEven so, I think itâs amazing. Kaede-kun⊠I wish I had a younger brother who could do all kinds of housework.â
Takanashi-san held my hand as she spoke, looking a little envious. I hadnât forgotten, but all of Kana-neechanâs classmates were seniors, after all.
âIs that so?â
âIf a girl cooks for herself, everyone says that⊠somehow, it encourages me,â she said with a smile.
Well, maybe Takanashi-san is right. Kana-neechan started cooking after seeing me handle housework. Iâm probably better at cooking than herâŠ
âEncouraging, huh?â
âYeah. I have a brother too, but heâs not good at housework. So I canât help but feel a little jealous.â
âI seeâŠâ
My brother isnât exactly housework-savvy either. His cooking skills are practically lethal.
While I was thinking that, Kana-neechan called out to me.
âHey, little brother.â
âHm? What is it, Kana-neechan?â
âWell⊠I was thinkingâŠâ
Kana-neechan looked at me with an expression that clearly meant she wanted to go to my house. I could tell from her fidgety movements.
ââŠAlright. Then, shall we go home together today?â
I said that while looking at her face. She looked happy and replied, âYes!â Surely, she wants to celebrate the success of the live performance.
Then Takanashi-san smiled and said:
âYou two get along really well. Are you⊠a couple?â
âN-no⊠itâs not like thatâŠâ
âWell, itâs natural if you were a coupleâŠâ
Kana-neechan said that as if it were the most obvious thing. I was so embarrassed I wanted to disappear.
âBeing a couple would be natural⊠I see,â Takanashi-san said, strangely satisfied. I hoped she wouldnât take it too seriously. But I knew she was holding back something behind that smile.
âYouâll understand if you find a wonderful boyfriend too.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean? Are you being sarcastic?â
Kana-neechan said, and Takanashi-san pouted. Kana-neechan, in response, looked a little apologetic.
âI didnât mean it that way. I justââ
âI know. What Nishida-san wants to say is, âLove is a wonderful thing,â right?â
âYeah⊠well, thatâs true.â
âI get the feeling, but⊠I think Iâll be fine without it for a while.â
Takanashi-san said that with a wry smile. It seemed like she was avoiding men⊠I wondered what had happened.
âWhy?â
âThe guy my brother introduced⊠we didnât share any hobbies, but he kept insisting anyway.â
âAh⊠thatâs a problem before even dating.â
âExactly. I felt bad for my brother, but I had to decline. I told him, âI donât want to date someone whose interests donât match mine.ââ
âI see⊠then that makes sense.â
Kana-neechan gave Takanashi-san a small, sympathetic smile. I understood; dating someone with completely different hobbies would just be painful. I, too, enjoy cooking, so it would be difficult to date someone who doesnât share that hobby.
I kept quietly watching Takanashi-san, who was smiling wryly.
By the time the cultural festival events were mostly over, and only the final fireworks remained, Kana-neechan spoke to me again.
âHey, little brother. If you want, dance with me.â
âHuh? Dance? What do you mean?â
âItâs the folk dance at the end of the festival. Do you already have plans to dance with someone else?â
âNo, not reallyâŠâ
Looking around, the female students were all dancing happily with the boys they had invited. Kana-neechan was probably motivated by the same reason.
âIn that case, dance with me.â
âEh⊠butâŠâ
I was still in my maid outfit. And thereâs the matter of Kana-neechanâs reputationâŠ
âNo matter what youâre wearing, youâre still my little brother. My feelings wonât change.â
âKana-neechanâŠâ
âBesides, do you know the legend in this girlsâ school?â
A legend? I vaguely remember hearing something⊠or maybe not.
âNo⊠I donât know the details. What is it?â
âThey say that couples who dance together at the cultural festivalâs folk dance are destined to become lovers⊠Isnât that wonderful?â
Kana-neechan said, looking enchanted. Even if she said that, I thought being a couple naturally happens if youâre dating.
âReally? Thatâs an interesting legend. But⊠becoming a couple? I donât really feel it.â
âFor girls, itâs a nice story. And if you say you donât feel it while dating me, isnât that rude?â
âSorryâŠâ
âNo. I wonât forgive you.â
Kana-neechan pouted.
âWhat should I do to be forgiven?â
âIf you dance with me, I might forgive you.â
âEh⊠that meansâŠâ
Basically, I had no right to refuse.
âIs that really not possible?â
Kana-neechan asked, looking anxious. I couldnât say no to a face like that.
âOf course itâs possible. If youâre okay with dancing with me, then Iâm asking again.â
âAlright! Letâs do it!â
Kana-neechan grabbed my hand with a full smile and pulled me to where everyone was dancing. From the side, it might have looked like two girls dancing together (even though Iâm a boy), but Kana-neechan didnât care and danced with confidence.
âHey⊠theyâre dancing like girls together.â
âDancing together like girls⊠is that okay?â
The girls watching started murmuring. Of course, we stood out. I felt nervous under the attention.
I expected teachers to intervene, but one of the female students said:
âItâs fine. Those two are okay.â
It was Nao-san. She smiled from a distance as she watched Kana-neechan and me dance.
Normallyâwell, if the timing had been a bit differentâI might have been dancing with Nao-san. But I decided to leave it at that.
âThank you, Nao-chan,â Kana-neechan said with a smile.
