Chapter 23 â I Want to See It!!
I was so happy.
Even though Prince Marxâwho had been my fiancĂ© since I was ten years oldâhad so easily believed my sisterâs words⊠Leo-san trusted me. He believed I hadnât bullied her.
âWas there ever any proof that you were a false saint?â he asked.
âWell⊠who knows? But there canât be two Saints at the same time. If my sister is the true one, then I suppose that makes me the fake.â
It wasnât as though a prophet had officially declared it, butâcome to think of itâno one had ever clearly said I was the Saint, either.
âThe Saint is the daughter of Count Vias.â
When that oracle was delivered, my sister Anika was also still a daughter of the Vias family. So it could have meant either of us.
ââŠWhen you were in the capital,â Leo-san said softly, âdid you keep smiling like this even when things were painful for you? Thinking about that makes my chest acheâŠâ
âEh?â
Leo-sanâs expression twisted in quiet pain.
Wait⊠when I was in the capital?
But right now, I wasnât in pain at all.
And back thenâI hadnât been able to smile like I do now.
âUmâŠâ
As I tried to think of how to explain, Leo-san furrowed his brave brows, leaned forward a little, and spoke.
âIf anything troubles you, you can always talk to me.â
âLeo-sanâŠâ
âI might not be very dependable,â he went on, his tone sincere, âbut Iâm truly grateful to you. And⊠maybe I can understand your feelings, even just a little.â
âEh?â
His hands clenched tightly on his knees.
I could tellâhe was saying this after gathering a lot of courage.
âMy mother⊠wasnât my fatherâs lawful wife. I was born between him and his mistress. Because of that, it was hard for me to face the legal wife and the younger brother she later had. So I left home and joined the knightsâalmost like running away.â
âOh⊠I see.â
That must have been painful for him.
And yet he was telling me about it.
âBut I think joining the knights was the right choice,â he continued. âNow, Iâm happy. My life feels fulfilling.â
He lifted his head as he said it, and I could see the honesty in his eyes.
âThatâs why,â he went on, âif youâre carrying any kind of pain, Iâd like to share it with you. Of course, only if you want to. I just want you to rememberâyouâre not alone here.â
âLeo-sanâŠâ
What a truly kind person he was.
To say something so warmâto someone like me, just a lowly dorm motherâŠ!
âThank you so much.â
He nodded. âMm.â
My chest felt warm and tight.
If this were the old meâthe one whoâd lived in the capitalâI might have broken down crying and thrown myself into his arms.
Into that broad, solid chest of his⊠while getting to enjoy those strong musclesâ
Wait, no! Thatâs not the point!
âThank you. Really, Iâm so happy you said that. But Iâm all right now. Ever since coming here, every day has been so much fun. Iâm happy.â
I faced his sincerity with my own honest feelings.
ââŠIâm glad to hear that.â
When I smiled brightly, Leo-san finally relaxed and smiled, too.
âŠAlthough, for just a moment, it seemed like something was still bothering him.
âThank you for the tea. I should get going now. I was planning to bring some of this honey lemon to Mirko-san, too.â
âYouâre going to Mirko?â
âYes.â
The moment I said that, Leo-sanâs expression shifted slightly.
ââŠIâll take it to him.â
âEh? But Iâd feel bad making you do thatâŠâ
âItâs fine. He usually trains around this time anywayâIâll see him soon.â
âTrainingâŠ?â
So he was doing extra workouts on his own time?
Mirko-san was⊠working out his muscles?
IâI want to see!!
âŠNo, Sibel, stop!
You mustnât interrupt someoneâs private training time. Thatâs why Leo-san is offering to deliver it for you.
âAll right, then. Please do.â
âYeah, Iâll make sure it gets to him safely.â
âThank you very much. Well thenâŠâ
After entrusting Mirko-sanâs share to Leo-san, I finally left his office.
Still, I couldnât help thinkingâLeo-san had gone through a lot himself.
Heâs always so kind, cheerful, and dependable as the knight captain⊠but deep down, he must have carried pain too.
I have to do my bestâso that I can be someone who supports him, even just a little!
With that renewed determination in my heart, I started to walk toward Mirko-sanâs quartersâthen stopped myself halfway and turned back.
Tonight, Iâd just return to my own room.
Leo-san only wanted to comfort Sibel, but somehow ended up worrying her instead.
And meanwhile, Sibel canât stop wondering about Mirkoâs training routine⊠(ïŒá”ïŒ)
