Chapter 23 ā I Want to See It!!
I was so happy.
Even though Prince Marxāwho had been my fiancĆ© since I was ten years oldāhad so easily believed my sisterās words⦠Leo-san trusted me. He believed I hadnāt bullied her.
āWas there ever any proof that you were a false saint?ā he asked.
āWell⦠who knows? But there canāt be two Saints at the same time. If my sister is the true one, then I suppose that makes me the fake.ā
It wasnāt as though a prophet had officially declared it, butācome to think of itāno one had ever clearly said I was the Saint, either.
āThe Saint is the daughter of Count Vias.ā
When that oracle was delivered, my sister Anika was also still a daughter of the Vias family. So it could have meant either of us.
āā¦When you were in the capital,ā Leo-san said softly, ādid you keep smiling like this even when things were painful for you? Thinking about that makes my chest acheā¦ā
āEh?ā
Leo-sanās expression twisted in quiet pain.
Wait⦠when I was in the capital?
But right now, I wasnāt in pain at all.
And back thenāI hadnāt been able to smile like I do now.
āUmā¦ā
As I tried to think of how to explain, Leo-san furrowed his brave brows, leaned forward a little, and spoke.
āIf anything troubles you, you can always talk to me.ā
āLeo-sanā¦ā
āI might not be very dependable,ā he went on, his tone sincere, ābut Iām truly grateful to you. And⦠maybe I can understand your feelings, even just a little.ā
āEh?ā
His hands clenched tightly on his knees.
I could tellāhe was saying this after gathering a lot of courage.
āMy mother⦠wasnāt my fatherās lawful wife. I was born between him and his mistress. Because of that, it was hard for me to face the legal wife and the younger brother she later had. So I left home and joined the knightsāalmost like running away.ā
āOh⦠I see.ā
That must have been painful for him.
And yet he was telling me about it.
āBut I think joining the knights was the right choice,ā he continued. āNow, Iām happy. My life feels fulfilling.ā
He lifted his head as he said it, and I could see the honesty in his eyes.
āThatās why,ā he went on, āif youāre carrying any kind of pain, Iād like to share it with you. Of course, only if you want to. I just want you to rememberāyouāre not alone here.ā
āLeo-sanā¦ā
What a truly kind person he was.
To say something so warmāto someone like me, just a lowly dorm motherā¦!
āThank you so much.ā
He nodded. āMm.ā
My chest felt warm and tight.
If this were the old meāthe one whoād lived in the capitalāI might have broken down crying and thrown myself into his arms.
Into that broad, solid chest of his⦠while getting to enjoy those strong musclesā
Wait, no! Thatās not the point!
āThank you. Really, Iām so happy you said that. But Iām all right now. Ever since coming here, every day has been so much fun. Iām happy.ā
I faced his sincerity with my own honest feelings.
āā¦Iām glad to hear that.ā
When I smiled brightly, Leo-san finally relaxed and smiled, too.
ā¦Although, for just a moment, it seemed like something was still bothering him.
āThank you for the tea. I should get going now. I was planning to bring some of this honey lemon to Mirko-san, too.ā
āYouāre going to Mirko?ā
āYes.ā
The moment I said that, Leo-sanās expression shifted slightly.
āā¦Iāll take it to him.ā
āEh? But Iād feel bad making you do thatā¦ā
āItās fine. He usually trains around this time anywayāIāll see him soon.ā
āTrainingā¦?ā
So he was doing extra workouts on his own time?
Mirko-san was⦠working out his muscles?
IāI want to see!!
ā¦No, Sibel, stop!
You mustnāt interrupt someoneās private training time. Thatās why Leo-san is offering to deliver it for you.
āAll right, then. Please do.ā
āYeah, Iāll make sure it gets to him safely.ā
āThank you very much. Well thenā¦ā
After entrusting Mirko-sanās share to Leo-san, I finally left his office.
Still, I couldnāt help thinkingāLeo-san had gone through a lot himself.
Heās always so kind, cheerful, and dependable as the knight captain⦠but deep down, he must have carried pain too.
I have to do my bestāso that I can be someone who supports him, even just a little!
With that renewed determination in my heart, I started to walk toward Mirko-sanās quartersāthen stopped myself halfway and turned back.
Tonight, Iād just return to my own room.
Leo-san only wanted to comfort Sibel, but somehow ended up worrying her instead.
And meanwhile, Sibel canāt stop wondering about Mirkoās training routine⦠(ļ¼įµļ¼)
