Chapter 9Â
The Happy Couple
âAhhh, this feels so good!â
We had come to Lake Haruna.
Takasaki City doesnât have much nature, so it must be a bit uncomfortable for an elf to live there.
The lake wasnât exactly clean, but it was still refreshing to get out of the city.
It was a place Iâd promised to take Ami to for a while, so the three of us came here together to hang out.
After riding the bus from Takasaki Station, we finally arrived at the lake.
The breeze gliding across the water felt pleasantly cool.
âSo Japan does have nature after all.â
âWell, Gunmaâs basically countryside.â
âI want a car.â
Canât wait until I turn eighteen.
Once I get my license, I want to drive all over the placeâmaybe buy a cheap used car and take trips up to Kusatsu and beyond.
Beside meâŠ
Without realizing it, I pictured Chamomileâs face.
âYuya, what about a motorcycle? Wouldnât that look cool?â
âNo way. Too dangerous.â
If I ever got into an accident, Iâd probably die.
As I admired the peaceful scenery, a horse-drawn carriage clopped past us.
Chamomile pointed at it.
âWhatâs that?â
âItâs for tourists. Wanna try riding it?â
âEhh, itâs too hot. I want ice cream.â
âYeah, it is hot. Alright, letâs get some.â
We were supposed to be in a cool lakeside area, but it was still scorching.
Didnât they say it was supposed to hit nearly forty degrees in Takasaki today?
âIce cream? What is that?â
âItâs a kind of dessert. Youâll see when you taste it.â
We stopped by a nearby souvenir shop and bought the classic vanilla soft-serve.
They also sold little snacks and local treats.
The place had a retro, Showa-era vibe to itâlike time had stopped here.
âItâs cold! And sweet! So deliciousâŠâ
âItâs⊠alright, I guess,â Ami said.
Chamomile was clearly delighted by her first taste of ice cream, while Ami ate a grape-flavored cone.
They even had bicycles for rent.
Cycling around the lake might be funâŠ
Ah, but Chamomile canât ride one, can she?
âTheyâve got bikes! You and Camo-chan should ride a tandem one together. Iâll take a regular one.â
âTheyâve got paddle boats too.â
This might turn out to be more fun than I expected.
Perspective: Yuya Matsunagaâs Classmates
âHey, isnât that Matsunaga? Look at himâout with two girls! Cocky bastard.â
âFor real? No wayâŠâ
âWait, isnât one of them Nakajima from the next class? The cute short-haired one everyone talks about?â
We spotted Matsunaga from the car.
Weâd come to Lake Haruna today too, riding in my older brotherâs car.
The girl with him was that tomboyish but adorable oneâa popular girl even in my class.
âShe your friend, Naoki? Wanna go say hi?â
âNah, forget it. Just drive, bro.â
We headed home, the three of us laughing and talking.
âWhen school starts after summer break, Iâm totally gonna ask him about this.â
âYou think one of themâs his girlfriend?â
âWho knows?â
âStill, hanging out with two girls⊠lucky guy. Iâd hate driving around with my little brotherâs friends. Man, I wish I had a girlfriendâŠâ
My brother grumbled from the driverâs seat.
âDidnât you used to have one in college?â
âI broke up with Kanon. If I still had a girlfriend, I wouldnât be spending my day here with you guys.â
Unlike me, my brotherâs popular at university.
Heâs one to talk.
Perspective: Kotoko Nakajima (Amiâs younger sister)
âIâm home!â
By evening, my sister was back.
Apparently, sheâd gone to Lake Haruna with our next-door neighbor, Yuya.
A date? Thatâs what it sounded like to meâbut she denied it.
So which is it?
âYuya turned me downâŠâ
She got rejectedâand then went out with him again just a few days later?
Unbelievable.
From what she said, they werenât aloneâsomeone else came too.
Well, that makes it a bit more understandable, I guess.
If it was just hanging out with friendsâYuya, my sister, and one more personâthen maybe itâs fine.
âDid you have fun?â
ââŠYeah, I guess.â
The way she said it was loaded with meaning.
She said sheâd been rejected, but maybe she still hadnât given up.
âHe says Iâm like a little sister to him.â
âWhatâs that supposed to mean? âI donât love you, but letâs stay close foreverâ? Thatâs awful!â
âI knew it already⊠but it still hurts.â
So sheâs not okay at all.
Wasnât she forcing herself to go just to stay near him?
âI didnât want Yuya to be stolen away by some random girl⊠but maybe if itâs Camo-chan, I can accept itâŠâ
I really wanted to give Yuya a piece of my mind, but my sister would probably stop me.
âWait, whoâs Camo-chan?â
That was the first time Iâd heard that name.
âChamomile. Sheâs an elf from another world.â
âWhâwhat!? That sounds amazing!â
And just like that, my anger at Yuya shifted into pure curiosity about this mysterious âChamomile.â
