Chapter – 05
The Existence of the Special Room.
âBy the way, Mukai, whatâs that paper bag youâre holding?â
Saki pointed at the bag placed beside Mukai.
âOh, this? Itâs souvenirs for the Special Room,
a magazine that the Dark Lord is reading,
and a book Genji asked me to get.â
âWhat the hell? The Dark Lordâs making us do errands
while heâs reading manga?
Canât he just use a tablet or something?â
Makino peeked into the bag,
pulled out a magazine, and flipped through it.
âHe says he doesnât like it unless itâs on paper.â
âBecause heâs kamiâa god, huh?â
Tadokoro laughed at his own dad joke.
ââŚâ
âHey, donât all look at me like that.
Youâre making this old man sad.â
Ignoring Tadokoro, Makino spoke.
âSo, Genjiâs into⌠historical novels? Oh, itâs a series.â
âSince he doesnât have presbyopia anymore,
he says there are tons of books heâs been wanting to read.â
âI see. And this box here⌠are these sweets?â
âYeah. The residents of the Special Room asked for them.
Theyâre from a famous shopâit was a pain to get them.
They really push their luck with their demands.â
âHey, whoâs actually in that Special Room?â
Saki asked curiously.
âYou donât know, Saki-chan?â
âNope! Me neither!â
Makino raised his hand beside her.
âThere are people from the political and financial elite in there.
Theyâre already dead, but theyâre still hanging around.â
Tadokoro lowered his voice as he said this.
âWhy though? Arenât all spirits supposed to be reborn
or incinerated unless theyâre exceptions?â
âYeah, thatâs trueâŚ
but as the saying goes, âEven in the underworld, money talks.ââ
Tadokoro made a coin shape with his fingers.
âWhatâs that supposed to mean?â
Saki frowned.
âIn short, they died naturally,
but they threw tantrums and refused to move on.â
âIs that even allowed?â
âItâs against the rules,
but the underworld tends to overlook things
when it comes to troublesome spirits.â
âBut moneyâdoes that mean six coins? The ones for crossing the Sanzu River?â
âYeah, the six mon are the ferry fee, right?
I paid the old man and woman before I got on the boat myself.â
They were called Datsueba and KeneĹ, the clothes-snatching demons.
This elderly demon couple ferried souls daily,
serving as the Dark Lordâs attendants,
bringing spirits to the gates of the underworld.
Contrary to how books describe them,
they werenât particularly frighteningâ
more like kind-looking⌠well, demons.
Itâs said they strip spirits of their clothes to weigh their sins,
and if you canât pay, they wonât let you on the boatâ
instead, they order you to wade through the shallows.
Saki and Makino exchanged confused looks.
âThereâs another kind of payment,â Tadokoro said softly,
âhidden assetsâand life.â
âLife? How do you give up life if youâre already dead?â
âItâs the lives of their relatives.â
â!!â
Saki and Makinoâs faces froze in silent shock.
Even after offering up the lives of their own kin,
some people still canât accept deathâ
they cling to existence with shameful stubbornness.
Humans are said to be born with deep karmic burdens,
and some even drag others with them to memorial services after death.
They canât go to the next world aloneâ
thatâs how sinful humans are.
Still, since theyâre dead,
they canât really do much in the underworld.
Yet as long as they stay in the Special Room,
they can eat delicious food,
enjoy their hobbies,
and spend their days however they please.
And to some extent,
they can even exert pressure on the living world.
The Special Room is a room, and yet not a roomâ
a truly special space.
