Chapter 13
The Fairies Who Protect the Prince
âWâWhat?!â
âYouâre Lady Erisâs granddaughter, right?
Then you should be able to use magic.
Start learningâright now!â
âHuh? Youâre telling me, a grown woman,
to become a magician now?â
Ruriâs startled voice rang out in disbelief
at the purple-haired girlâs words.
âWitches have always been grandmothers,â
said the blond-haired boy matter-of-factly.
âIn our kingdom too, all the great magicians
are little old ladies.â
âI am not a grandmother yet,â Ruri muttered,
irritated.
âBut by the time you learn,
you might be one,â Lapis teased, laughing.
â…â
Ruri puffed out her cheeks, sulking a little.
Then she said,
âBy the way, somethingâs been bothering me.
How is it that I can talk to you all so easily?â
âYouâre speaking the language
of the Jewel Kingdom right now,â
the purple-haired girl explained.
âWhat?â
âYupâyour brainâs automatically processing it that way.
That alone proves youâre Lady Erisâs granddaughter.
And that necklaceâ
wearing it helps amplify magic power,
so you should keep it on.â
Ruri looked down at the gem,
a stone sparkling like a diamond.
âStill,â she murmured,
âthis kid isnât growing at all.â
She glanced at the little prince in her arms.
âHeâll probably start growing normally from here,â
the pink-haired boy said.
âWhat?! Thatâs going to be a problem!â
Ruri panicked.
Sheâd never raised a child beforeâ
what was she supposed to do with one this small?
What did he even eat?
And waitâwas she supposed to hide him here?
If anyone found out, wouldnât that make her a kidnapper?
âHey, Prince,â she said half-jokingly,
âhurry up and grow up, okay?
Then maybe you can get a part-time job or something!â
âWhat outrageous words!â cried the orange-haired boy.
âYou dare suggest such labor
for the noble Prince Phos?â
âI donât even know what else to do!â Ruri shot back.
âIâve never taken care of a little kid before!â
She turned toward the orange-haired fairy again.
âThen raise him as your own child,â
the purple-haired girl said bluntly.
âHuh?!â Ruri gaped.
âIf someone whoâs never been pregnant
suddenly shows up with a kid,
thatâs just going to make people more suspicious!â
âWhy? In our world,
it only takes a single minute to make a child,â
the white-haired boy said casually.
Ruri was speechless.
Rightâthere were no men
in the Jewel Kingdom to begin with,
so they had no concept of human reproduction.
Of course they wouldnât understand.
All it took in their world
was a single drop of blood to create life.
âOh, but what about you fairies?â
Ruri asked, noticing that some of them were male.
âWeâre not humans,â
the red-haired girl explained.
âFairies of the Fairy Stone Isles
are born from stones themselves.â
âI seeâŚâ Ruri murmured.
Her gaze softened
as she looked down at Prince Phos,
who was starting to doze off.
It wasnât that she lacked maternal instinctâ
it was just that sheâd never had the chance to use it.
And now, she couldnât bring herself
to abandon this small, innocent child.
âIn this countryâor rather,
in the human world,â she said gently,
âpeople carry babies for ten months
and then give birth to them themselves.â
âGive birthâŚ?â
The fairies grimaced,
their faces twisting in confusion and mild disgust.
âAnyway, never mind that,â Ruri sighed.
âYou all can use magic, right?â
The fourteen fairies nodded in unison.
