Story 33

I don’t think that was a human

I was driving down a country road on my way to work.

On the left side, there were orange groves; on the right, mountains.
Just a narrow, single-lane road — typical countryside scenery.

It was an early shift that day, so I was passing through around 7 a.m.

Not a single other car on the road.
Still dim outside, the kind of gray light before full morning.

And then, I saw her —
an old woman, her back deeply bent, trudging along the road.
She was walking heavily, in this odd posture with her hands sticking out behind her.
Nothing unusual in the countryside — you see old ladies like that sometimes,
wearing aprons and headscarves.

So at first, I didn’t think much of it.
There were houses scattered around, after all.

But… something felt off.

First of all, for an old woman, she was fast.
Was she running?
No — her movements were too strange for that.
But even so, she was moving far too quickly.

And her head — it was moving weirdly.

When she stepped forward with her right foot, her head rolled — almost swung — all the way to her right shoulder.
Then with her left step, it rolled the other way.
Her head was moving way too much.

I was getting closer.

The head kept rolling — right, left, right — unnaturally.
It looked completely wrong.

As I approached, I slowed the car down.

Even then, I couldn’t see too clearly through the windshield.

But one thing was obvious —
her head wasn’t attached to her neck.
It was rolling freely across her shoulders as she walked.

I passed her and immediately glanced at the rearview mirror.

Roll, roll, roll, roll — thud.

I saw her head fall to the ground.

I don’t think that was a human.
