Chapter 97 â Initiation
The knight Norton glanced at Raphael, then leaned toward Demichi and whispered quietly:
âThatâs⌠His Graceâs little brother-in-lawâŚâ
âSo what? I knew that already.â
ââŚHeâs someone the Grand Duke cherishes⌠a lotâŚâ
âWhat?â
At those words, Demichi jolted in shock and quickly set Raphael down.
âNorton, you bastard! Why didnât you say that earlier?â
Raphael gasped, coughing from the loosened grip on his neck, as Demichiâs enormous hand patted his back like thunder.
âSo youâre our Grand Dukeâs one and only precious little brother-in-law? Forgive me, young master! I had no ideaâit was rude of me not to recognize you!â
He leaned in, grinning mischievously, and whispered into Raphaelâs ear:
âDonât tell His Grace about this, alright?â
Norton glanced at Raphael and added in his usual calm voice:
âThe training yard is full of sharp weapons. Itâs dangerous. You should return nowâIâll escort you.â
âThatâs right, young master,â Demichi said. âThis isnât a playground for children. If you want to play, go to the gardens instead.â
He puckered his lips and coddled him, which made Raphael clench his fists in anger.
âIâm not a child! Iâm twelve years old!â
âHuh?â Demichi raised a brow.
âLiar. Youâre so smallââ
The surrounding knights, who had been watching, also looked surprised.
âWe knew kids from the capital grew slower, but this is too much, isnât it?â
âSir Demichi.â
âBe honestâhe doesnât even look eight years old!â
âIâIâll grow soon enough!â
Their curious stares made Raphaelâs cheeks burn red.
âWhat, does the Marquisâs house starve you? His Grace was scrawny too, and now youââ
âIâm not scrawny! IâIâm going to be a knight!â
Demichiâs lips curled into a grin.
âOh-ho. Ever trained before?â
âOf course!â Raphael straightened proudly.
Even if he was small, he had trained in swordsmanship at the Marquisâs estate since childhood. At the academy too, he had rarely lost in sparring against boys his age.
The knightsâ eyes glimmered with curiosity at his confidence.
Demichi rubbed his chin and glanced at the vice-captain.
The gray-haired knight gave him a disapproving look, then sighed faintlyâan unspoken sign to do as he pleased.
Taking that as permission, Demichi smirked.
âHey, Leon!â
A young knight hurried over.
âLeon is the youngest among us, but his skills arenât lacking. How about a friendly match?â
Leon looked youthful in the face but had a large, solid build.
Raphael glanced around nervously. The knightsâ eyes were glued to him, waiting to see what the Marquisâs boy could do.
He swallowed hard.
ââŚAlright.â
At his nod, some knights whistled.
Demichi handed him a wooden practice sword, and the knights cleared a circle around the two.
âLeon, go easy. Donât hurt the precious young master.â
âYou know what I mean, right?â
The knights chuckled teasingly.
Raphael gripped the wooden sword tightly.
Leon raised his own weapon casually, his expression relaxed.
âWe can start whenever you wish.â
Raphaelâs fingers trembled slightly.
It was his first time sparring before strangersâand surrounded by knights who didnât particularly like him.
He didnât expect to win, butâ
âItâs fine. I just need to charge with all Iâve got!â
Even if he lost, his sister would praise him for being brave.
He clenched his sword and lunged forward.
Clash!
The sharp crack of wood echoed through the yard.
Raphael recalled every lesson heâd ever learned and threw himself into the fight, attacking wildly.
He managed to strike toward Leonâs waist, watching closely for his reaction.
Instead of mocking him, Leonâs expression showed mild surpriseâand even a hint of pleasure.
Their levels were worlds apart, but Leon didnât simply brush him aside. He met Raphaelâs attacks evenly, parrying rather than overpowering.
Raphaelâs lungs burned as he pushed forward, but the exchange thrilled him.
The knights around them began shouting encouragement.
âYes! There, push harder!â
âGood! Donât stop now!â
His legs started trembling, his forehead slick with sweat.
Leon, however, hadnât even broken a sweat.
Raphael felt he might collapse any moment.
After what felt like dozens of exchangesâ
âThatâs enough.â
Demichi called the match just as Raphael was about to give up.
âStill⌠I lasted to the end.â
Exhausted, Raphael dropped his sword.
Leon smiled warmly, lowering his weapon.
âThat was an excellent match, young master.â
âTh-thank you?â
Why was he thanking him? That sounded stupidâbut Leon only nodded politely and stepped back.
âImpressive. Our young master is tougher than I thought,â Demichi laughed.
The moment he said it, Raphael collapsed onto the ground with a thud.
The knightsâ hearty laughter filled the yard.
Demichi crouched and squeezed Raphaelâs shoulders and arms with his big hands.
âGood bones. If you eat properly, youâll grow into a fine man.â
âBut⌠I already eat wellâŚâ
âYou need meat.â
A knight nearby added:
âIn Blenheim, the knights eat heaps of meat three times a day.â
ââŚDoes the Grand Duke too?â Raphael asked.
âEh?â
âDoes His Grace eat lots of meat?â
Before the knight could answer, Demichi leaned down and whispered dramatically:
âNot just meat. Monster meat.â
ââŚ!â
âThatâs how he keeps such a massive body.â
âCould the rumors⌠be true?â Raphaelâs eyes went wide.
âCaptain, enough,â Norton said, frowning.
âInstead of dispelling ridiculous rumors, youâre making them worse.â
âScaring outsiders is useful, isnât it? Whatâs the harm? Come on, young masterâour lord is amazing, isnât he? He slices monsters like paper.â
Raphael, embarrassed but honest, gave a small nod.
âSee? Even he thinks so!â Demichi boomed.
The other knights grinned, giving Raphael a thumbs-up.
âHeâs sharp for his ageâdefinitely the Grand Dukeâs brother-in-law.â
âCute and clever too.â
Their easy camaraderie made Raphaelâs heart lighten.
Back at the Marquisâs estate, even after years of training with knights, he had never shared such warm words with them.
âMaybe they all like my sister tooâŚâ
Maybe she was happier here than he had thought.
Just as he was warming up to the North, a tall figure appeared in front of himâthe Grand Duke himself.
***
The sound of slow, heavy footsteps echoed on the brick path.
Loic walked beside Raphael in awkward silence, with Norton following a few steps behind.
At the training yard, when he had seen Raphael, Loic had impulsively offered to escort him back to the annex personally.
âBut what do I even say to a boy this ageâŚ?â
He had never realized, until now, how poor his social skills were.
The top of Raphaelâs brown head bobbed quickly beside him, trying to keep pace.
Loic remembered the boyâs snarling defiance from before:
ââThese people will never treat my sister well!â
He had seemed fierce then.
Loic tried, cautiously:
âIs the annex comfortable enough?â
Raphael flinched, looking up at him.
Was his tone too harsh?
The boy frowned and muttered:
ââŚItâs fine.â
Rude little brat.
To speak so curtly to the Grand Dukeâclearly, he was relying on Annetteâs protection. Loic couldnât scold him for that.
Patiently, he tried again:
âDid you come out here because the annex was stifling?â
ââŚI was just curious about the knights.â
âAnd? What do you think of them?â
Raphael mumbled, something like ânot bad.â
Loic thought backâAnnette had also rushed to the training yard her first time here.
âMaybe the siblings are alike in that wayâŚâ
They didnât resemble each other in looks, but there was a familiar warmth in the boyâs round cheeks when he glanced up.
âYouâre calm today,â Loic remarked, remembering their first meeting.
âYesterday you looked ready to drag Annette away.â
Raphaelâs reply was sharp:
âIf my sister wants to leave, then of course Iâll take her.â
âAnnette is my wife.â
Loic puffed his chest slightly, pride swelling. He could still feel her embrace from the night before, vivid in his memory.
But Raphael retorted coldly:
âThe Grand Duke isnât her type.â
ââŚWhat?â
Loic froze mid-step.
ââŚThen what is her type?â
