Chapter : 04
âSorry for calling you pretty. I just meant that Herwin looked like an angel⊠no, I meant handsomeâŠâŠ.â
The words tumbled out, filled with guilt toward Herwin.
Herwinâs stubborn resolve to never forgive her melted away at once.
ââŠâŠIâm sorry for getting mad too. I knew you didnât mean it on purpose.â
Deep down, he already knew that Lucia hadnât called him âprettyâ to tease him.
Still, the word had upset him, and heâd dug in his heels.
âHehe, then weâre friends again, right?â
For the first time, Lucia beamed brightly. Her oval-shaped eyes curved into a smile that was irresistibly lovely.
Herwin, not realizing that his cheeks had gone red, allowed himself to be tugged down beside her.
âDid you come here because of the New Yearâs banquet too?â
âYeah, thatâs right.â
âWhere do you normally live?â
âFar awayâdays and days away by carriage. Itâs colder there than here.â
âWhat? Colder than this? Iâm freezing already.â
âIt is cold, but this is nothingâŠâŠ.â
As if theyâd never quarreled at all, their conversation flowed easily.
The two gradually grew closer, learning about one another, and by the time the adults came to find them, they were laughing and running around together as if theyâd been friends all along.
âKids, did you make up?â
âYes! I decided to be friends with Herwin!â
âMom, Mom! Lucia gave me this!â
Both children ran to their parents, chattering excitedly about the games theyâd played and the stories theyâd shared.
Seeing their childrenâs faces blossom with smiles, the parents too couldnât help but smile.
âWhoa⊠a baby.â
âCute, right? Thatâs my little brother.â
âHenry, right?â
âMm-hm. Henry Peneus. Heâll turn two tomorrow.â
There was just one day left before the new year. In no time at all, Herwin and Lucia, who had started out fighting, had become fast friends. Today they had gone together to visit Herwinâs younger brother Henry.
Theyâd only caught a glimpse of Henry on the first day when everyone had gathered, and this was the first real time theyâd spent with him.
Henry, just old enough to start running around, couldnât stay still, darting all over the room.
Lucia was fascinated by how much Henry resembled Herwin.
As she stared at Henryâs face, she thought of Herwin and their father, Heil. Then Henryâs round, red eyes locked on hers, making her own eyes go wide.
Compared to Herwinâs slightly sharp gaze, Henryâs round eyes regarded her steadily.
âWh-whatâs that about?â
âI think you surprised him.â
âMe? No oneâs ever said that beforeâŠâŠ.â
âYou look⊠unusual.â
The words âlike a fairyâ or âcuteâ popped into his head, but Herwin couldnât bring himself to say them aloud.
Luciaâs lips wobbled into a pout, and Herwin panickedâthough before he could say anything, Henry toddled over.
âAh!â
âHuh?â
Flailing his short little arms, Henry rushed over and stopped right in front of Lucia.
He didnât do anythingâjust stood there, staring up at her.
âHenry, what are you doing?â
Finally, unable to watch any longer, Herwin called out. Henry turned his head toward him.
âHyung!â
âMm, you have something to say to Lucia?â
âLucia? Lucia!â
âYes, thatâs Lucia. Try saying it. Lu-ci-a!â
âLusia!â
âNo, not Lusia. Lu-ci-a.â
âLusia!â
Henry kept repeating after his brother. Lucia, whoâd never been around anyone younger than herself, found it fascinating.
âHe talks really well.â
âHeâs a bit ahead for his age.â
âAbubuu, ahh!â
Suddenly Henry scampered off. He started rummaging through the luggage theyâd brought from the North.
His little bottom wiggled as he leaned in, making Lucia giggle.
âYou know what? You and Henry look exactly alike.â
âReally? I donât see it.â
âNo, you really do! You even look just like the Duke!â
âEhem! Well⊠itâs only natural Iâd look like Dad.â
At the mention of Heil, Herwinâs mouth twitched.
Soon Henry returned, lugging a picture book in his tiny arms.
âThis!â
âA book?â
Henry held it out to Lucia. She blinked, then looked to Herwin for help.
âDo you want me to read to you, Henry? I can do it.â
âNo! Lucia! Lucia!â
When Herwin tried to take the book, Henry shook his head fiercely.
Being rejected by his baby brother for the first time, Herwin froze in shock.
Henry snatched the book from him and handed it back to Lucia.
âLucia! Lucia!â
âI donât really know how to read yetâŠâŠâ
Sheâd only just begun learning letters and couldnât read fluently. But before she could explain, Henry crawled right into her lap.
She caught the soft baby scent of his dark hair as he snuggled in.
Henry flipped through the pages quickly, then stopped at one.
âLucia!â
He pointed his tiny finger at the illustration.
It showed a woman with wavy brown hair and blue eyes sitting in a forest, smelling flowers.
âIs⊠is that supposed to be me?â
âMm-hm! Lucia!â
Henry beamed, nodding hard. Lucia studied the picture curiously.
It was just an illustration, but being told she looked like such a lovely woman made her happy.
She smiled shyly, and both Henry and Herwinâstill sulking from earlierâfound themselves staring at her blankly.
Smooch.
Suddenly, something soft and wet pressed against her cheek. Startled, Lucia turned and saw Henry grinning up at her.
âLucia! Mine!â
Herwinâs jaw dropped as he watched his baby brother plant a kiss on Luciaâs cheek.
A strange fire sparked in his chest.
âHenry!â
âKyaah! Mine! Mine!â
âLucia is not yours! Come here!â
âNu-uh, donât wanna!â
âUgh, youâll get in trouble with me, Henry!â
Despite his squirming, Herwin pulled Henry away from Lucia.
Lucia touched her cheek, bewildered, as the Peneus brothers tussled.
âI donât mind thoughâŠâŠâ
But no one heard her.
âWaaaah, Hyungâs mean!â
âDonât cry, sweetie. Herwin, what on earth did you do to make Henry cry like this?â
Scarlett looked at her son suspiciously, but Herwin only pouted and turned his head away.
âI dunno.â
âStrange⊠youâve always gotten along so well. My poor Henry, there, there.â
She rocked the red-eyed, wailing Henry in her arms.
It had only been minutes earlier that Henry had kissed Lucia, only to be pulled away by Herwin. That was what set off the tears. Scarlett, hearing the crying from the next room, had rushed in.
She couldnât understand it.
Herwin and Henry had never fought before. Herwin always doted on him, and Henry adored him in return. But here in the capital, suddenly this?
As Scarlett sighed, she noticed Lucia standing awkwardly nearby.
âLucia, darling, would you tell me what happened?â
Herwin flinched, panic written all over his face.
Not sparing him a glance, Scarlett gave Lucia a warm, expectant smile.
âUh, wellâŠâŠ.â
Lucia fidgeted, torn between Scarlettâs gentle pressure and Herwinâs wide-eyed warning not to tell.
She didnât know what to do. If she told Scarlett, Herwin would be upset. But if she didnât answer, it would feel like she was being rude to an adult.
Finally, she squeezed her eyes shut.
âH-Herwin kissed me!â
âHm?â
âWh-what?! IâI never did!â
Scarlett blinked, startled, while Herwin turned crimson.
Realizing her mistake, Luciaâs eyes flew open.
âAh, no, I meanâit wasnât Herwin. Henry kissed me. And then Herwin pulled him away, and thatâs whyâŠâŠ.â
âI see, that explains it.â
Scarlett quickly pieced it together. Then, with a sly look, she turned her eyes on her son.
It made sense for little Henry to kiss a girl he liked. But Herwinâs jealous reaction? That was telling.
Hoho, didnât you say you hated her before?
âWhy did you tell her!â
âWell, sheâs an adult. I couldnât just lie.â
Herwin, flustered, stepped closer to Lucia as if to scold herâonly to stop short when he saw her eyes drooping sadly.
Heâd never seen that look back in the North.
Was it because she was his age? Or because⊠she was special to him?
Either way⊠adorable.
Scarlett watched with quiet amusement, then suddenly teased:
âOh my, looks like Henry really likes you, Lucia. What if he keeps chasing you even after he grows up?â
âAhh, Lucia! Lucia!â
Right on cue, Henry babbled happily.
âLucia, how about it? Youâd be welcome as my daughter-in-law anytime.â
âM-me? Um⊠sure, I guess.â
Lucia answered blankly. She didnât really understand, but it seemed like the right thing to say.
Herwin, however, understood perfectly.
âMom! Why would Lucia come into our house?!â
âWhy not? Henry likes her. And if they both agree when theyâre older, whatâs wrong with that?â
âNo way! Lucia canât!â
âMy, why are you making a fuss? Unless⊠do you like her too?â
Scarlettâs lips twitched as she tried not to laugh.
Herwin, puffing with indignation, clamped his mouth shut. But when his eyes met Luciaâs, his cheeks flared bright red.
âWh-who said I like her! I donât like Lucia!â
Scarlett could tell he was lying through his teeth. Lucia, however, believed him.
âYou⊠you donât like me, HerwinâŠâŠ?â
âN-no, thatâs not what I meantâŠâŠâ
Caught off guard, Herwin froze.
âI-I like you, but⊠Herwin says he doesnât like meâŠâŠ!â
âWaaaaaah!â
Lucia burst into tears, and Herwin panicked.
âThatâs not true! I do like you! Donât cry!â
But his own feelings of embarrassment boiled over, and soon he too was sniffling.
And as if on cue, Henry started bawling again.
The three children wailed together in a chorus of tears, leaving Scarlett flustered.
âKids, kidsâit was just a joke! Please stop cryingâŠâŠâ
âHerwin doesnât like meeee!â
âNo! I do like you! Momâs so meanâŠ!â
âWaaaaaaah!â
âOh dear heavens.â
With sobs echoing in every direction, Scarlett pressed her forehead.
She could only sigh and try to soothe them until Julian arrivedâthinking to herself, Serves me right.
