CHAPTER 01…………….
â I was admiring the angle of my fiancĂ©âs bangs.
Sir Roland Evans, the gentleman who embodies the ideal of refinement and charm throughout the royal capital, had once again perfected his small, gentle smile this morning.
It was almost unfair how good he was at it.
Unfairâbut forgivable.
No, more than thatâI wanted him to do it more.
âIris, your gaze is⊠um, a little intense.â
âMy apologies. Your bangs look adorable today.â
âA-ad⊠adorableâŠ?â
His ears flushed faintly red. Yesâthis was the second conjugation of âadorable.â
In public, we were known as the ideal couple: a beautiful man and woman with perfect posture, flawless smiles, and impeccable timing in conversation.
But inside, we were made of research and experimentation.
âTodayâs agenda is the introduction of the âFiancĂ© Date Review Sheet.ââ
âAgendaâŠ?â
In the morning salon, I sat by the window and drew a stack of papers from my bag.
The Date Review Sheetâa hand-drawn chartâlisted several items:
-
Walking pace: Fast / Moderate / Slow
-
Conversation temperature: Cold / Neutral / Warm / Hot
-
Tea sweetness: None / Light / Normal / Sweet
-
Sunlit time secured: ___ minutes
-
Comfort meter: 0% â 100%
-
Self-declaration of cuteness: ( ) Adorable
ââŠIs that last column really necessary?â
âIt is. I suspect self-awareness of oneâs own cuteness correlates with overall happiness.â
âSelf-declaration, huh⊠that takes courage.â
Sir Roland gently adjusted his bangs.
Even that gesture was adorable. I added a small circle to my âCuteness Observation Notesâ.
âI dislike uncertainty. So I measure what I can. I like experiments.â
âYes. Youâre a researcher. And IâŠâ
His signature smile wavered ever so slightlyâ
proof that this ideal gentleman wasnât made only of ideals.
Something in my chest warmed softly.
âI want to know your temperature, Iris. Iâll help measure whatever you like.â
âThank you. Then first, letâs establish the baseline for walking paceââ
Just then, the butler knocked on the door.
âPardon me, the Alliance Companyâs envoy is at the front gate regarding this morningâs inspection.â
âLetâs go. Itâll serve as a field test for the review sheet.â
âField⊠test?â
Roland blinked rapidly. Adorable.
I jotted down âCuteness: Twice before departureâ on the sheet.
Once outside, we both donned our ideal masks.
Two shadows stretched over the cobblestone street as the royal capital filled with the scents of herbs and bread.
A young merchant hurriedly held down his hat.
âSir Evans, Lady Lavendaâthank you for coming todayââ
âThank you for inviting us. Letâs get straight to the point. Itâs about the new herb transport crates, correct?â
Rolandâs tone shifted into his official voice, naturally switching from his private âbokuâ to the formal âwatashi.â
(I knew he used boku in private, but watashi in public. His ability to switch effortlessly was another of his strengths.)
I reviewed the documents beside him. The issue concerned essential oils in the wood reacting with the herbsâ aroma, potentially altering their scent. The solution lay in a new inner liningâ
âIrisâah, no, Lady Lavenda. Your opinion?â
âThe interior should be lined with hemp paper, or cloth coated with beeswax. It allows for precise adjustment of breathability. Cost-effectiveness should also be favorable.â
The young merchantâs eyes lit up. Roland nodded slightly and gestured to his secretary to take notes.
Without breaking our ideal public composure, we carried on our private dialogue beneath the surface.
âOur strides⊠are they matching?â he murmured softly.
âYes. Perfectly. Rating: âModerate.ââ
âHow about âSlowâ?â
I smiled faintly and brushed my fingertips across the back of his handâso subtly no one could see.
âAdding a new item: âHeartbeat rate during hand-back touch.ââ
âYou add things fast.â
âItâs my policy never to let a variable escape.â
His throat moved with a small gulp.
In my heart, I whispered âadorableâ three times.
When the morning inspection ended, we took a shortcut through the royal garden.
Sunlight danced on the leaves; gravel whispered underfoot.
Spotting a sunny bench, I tugged lightly at Rolandâs sleeve.
âShall we sit here? Iâd like to log some sunlit time.â
âYes. I want to share the sunlight with you.â
We sat side by side.
To the world, the ideal couple.
To ourselves, merely two people aligning their breaths.
ââŠIris.â
âYes?â
âBecause you often laugh in front of me, I think Iâm no longer afraid of being called adorable.â
âYou were afraid?â
âA little. I⊠wellâŠâ
He hesitated and lowered his gaze.
Sunlight filtered through his lashes, turning them into threads of gold dust.
âI want to look good. Especially if Iâm beside you.
But sometimes, keeping myself âbeautifulâ feels⊠hollow.â
I shook my head.
âSir Roland. You care about appearances not just to show othersâbut to like yourself, donât you?
And I love that about you.â
ââŠIris.â
This time, his smile wasnât just unfairâit was beyond unfair.
I circled âConversation temperature: Warmâ on the sheet.
Then, after a brief hesitation, I pointed to the last column.
âYour self-declaration, please.â
âRight nowâŠ?â
âYes. Right now.â
Roland shrugged slightly, pressed his bangs down with one hand, and gazed seriously at the paper.
Then, a bit embarrassed but without running away, he took the pen.
( ) Adorable â ( A little adorable )
âThatâs modest.â
âBecause the highest score⊠I want you to be the one to write it someday.â
A faint ache bloomed in my chestâimmediately melting into warmth.
The fact that I chose this person filled the air with the scent of sunlight.
âNow then, next measurement: tea sweetness.â
âHere? In the garden?â
âYes. Experiments should be done while theyâre hot.â
I took out a small sugar jar and placed a paper packet into his palm.
He smiled, snapped the sugar in two. Crack.
A bird took off into the sky.
The sweetness was shared evenly between usâ
and maybe, that was just the right amount.
