43. Jealousy
âWhat brings you here all of a sudden?â
Belia asked brightly.
Though things hadnât gone exactly as planned, she was rather pleased with how smoothly the tea party had ended.
Khalid looked at her with a bold grin and answered shamelessly.
âTo see you.â
What was that supposed to mean?
Belia let out a hollow laugh.
âDonât joke. Seriously, what brings you here?â
She had already been planning to leave, looking for an excuse to slip away. Khalidâs sudden appearance gave her a natural way out, so she didnât feel the need to scold him.
Still, curiosity gnawed at her. Why had he shown up all of a sudden?
Meeting his gaze, Belia urged him for an answer.
âI figured it would be almost over by nowâŚâ
âAnd?â
Khalid smiled brightly, as if amused.
âI thought if I took you away from there, the princess would be terribly annoyed.â
Belia laughed along, finding his reason quite agreeable. Truthfully, she had secretly enjoyed seeing the expression on Princess Canterifâs face sour.
âReally⌠we match in the strangest ways.â
Chuckling, Belia teased him with a playful voice.
âYou couldâve at least given me a heads-up. I was really startled.â
Khalid laughed heartily in response.
âCome here.â
He patted the space beside him. Belia gave him a meaningful look. What on earth was he planning?
âWouldnât it be better to face each other?â
Instead, Khalid grinned and grabbed her arm, pulling her toward him.
In an instant, Beliaâs body fell into his arms.
âNo⌠I like holding you like this better.â
Khalid held her firmly, while Belia flustered. Then, he bit her exposed neck through her dress.
âAh!â
Belia let out a startled cry and quickly covered her mouth.
âWhat are you doing?!â
She slapped his shoulder.
âSeriously, what is this?â
âSweeten up.â
Khalid buried his face into her neck again, inhaling her scent deeply. Belia was left speechless.
ââŚYouâre so sweet, sometimes I want to swallow you whole.â
Belia thumped his shoulder, signaling him to stop. Yet Khalid ignored her protest, keeping his grip tight.
âYouâve been neglecting me lately.â
His voice carried a hint of hurt, muffled against her neck, almost like a whining child.
âKhalid.â
No reply came. Recently, they had mostly discussed work.
âWe have so much to do.â
Time was tight, leaving little room to stroll leisurely.
ââŚâ
âKhalid. Are you really doing this?â
His grip loosened slightly, and Belia seized the moment to slip from his embraceâbut still sat on his lap. Khalid, not intending to let her go, tightened his hold again.
âTell me. Whatâs missing?â
âYou are.â
Belia almost laughed at his bluntness, but held back and asked,
âHow can I fill that?â
Khalidâs hands on her waist twitched. She slapped them away.
âNot that.â
He didnât answer again. The shadow of darkness in his lowered gaze worried her.
âDid something happen?â
âJust⌠something.â
He didnât outright deny it, so she guessed something must have happened. A sudden thought struck Belia.
âDid you see Raul?â
Realizing that he might be upset because of Raul, his attitude suddenly made sense. Khalidâs face darkened.
ââŚHeâs not willing to give up on you. He asked me how long you would stay by my side.â
Before, Belia would have scoffed without flinching, but now, knowing she had been Raulâs lover, Khalid could not easily dismiss his provocation. Belia felt a pang of pity for him, imagining the hurt he must have felt.
She sighed deeply and cupped his cheeks.
âI really hate Raul. You have no idea how creepy it is that he has feelings for me.â
She pressed his cheeks twice, then gave his slightly protruding lips a light kiss, glaring at him.
âDo you want more?â
Khalidâs pupils flickered. Beliaâs lips drew close to his.
âIf you keep pestering me, Iâll have no choice but to scold you, Khalid.â
He felt faint.
ââŚIf this is what it means to be scolded, Iâll cause trouble every day.â
âIâm not joking.â
Her voice was low and cold.
âI understand why you care about Raul. ButâŚâ
She lifted her half-closed eyelids to meet his gaze. Her long eyelashes moved slowly and gently, tickling a corner of his heart. She kissed him lightly again, holding his shoulders, continuing,
âDidnât you promise you wouldnât force your feelings on me?â
He did not look away, his blue eyes flickering with something subtle.
âYou said that hearts always change,â she reminded him.
âSo⌠has your heart changed?â
âYes.â
Khalid lifted his arm from around her back, holding her delicate neck with one hand, and kissed her deeply as if to swallow her breath.
After lingering over her, he pulled away and said hoarsely,
âGive me certainty.â
The carriage jolted.
âI think Iâve already given enough.â
âNot enough.â
He kissed her roughly again.
âI always find you lacking, Belia.â
His desire was intenseâthough they were in contact, he wanted to reach deeper.
âItâs a shame weâre in a carriage.â
ââŚI agree.â
Until he pulled her closer, she hadnât expected such desire from herself. It had only been a contract between them, a partnership for mutual goals. Yet she wanted him. She didnât know where this greed came from.
ââŚI donât know.â
Belia embraced his neck tightly, hiding her confusion.
Belia had gone for a walk in the garden after a long while.
Staring at papers all day had made her head spin. She had been avoiding walks to prevent encountering Raul inside the palace, unless Khalid accompanied herâbut her throbbing headache was unbearable today.
âThey say the roses are in full bloom in the central gardenâŚâ
The maid spoke hesitantly, as if disappointed. How ironic that she had chosen the small garden next to the Second Princeâs palace for her walk, when there were so many more beautiful gardens in the palace.
âThese flowers are beautiful enough. I really like them.â
Belia smiled and spoke calmly. Raulâs residence and the Second Princeâs palace were far apart, so she wouldnât run into him here. She ventured deeper into the garden.
âI wish the Second Prince had come with me, donât you think?â
âWell, youâve been taking it easy, so it canât be helped.â
It had been hard to hold Khalid back from abandoning work to accompany her. Acid silently pleaded with her with tearful eyes to restrain the prince.
âHe seemed so busyâŚâ
Belia chuckled, recalling the recent commotion. Khalid was stubbornly staying closeâwhat a problem.
âHe really acts like a dog, doesnât he?â
Belia looked up at the palace, guessing Khalid could probably see her through the window.
âI really canât handle him.â
Partly, she had chosen this garden to avoid Raul, but also for her drooping, disappointed âhoundâ of a companion.
âHe looks kind of cute like thatâŚâ
Belia hummed happily, her steps light. She strolled slowly, hands behind her back, smiling brightly as if to show Khalid. Heâs probably fuming right now, she thought.
âPrincess Belia.â
A voice from behind made her stop. She instantly recognized itâRaul.
âWhat a coincidence to meet you. Iâm surprisingly glad to see you.â
Belia exhaled subtly and turned, keeping her expression neutral. Despite the discomfort, he was still the empireâs First Prince.
âItâs been a while, Prince Raul.â
She hid her displeasure and greeted him calmly. It had been a long time since they last met.
ââŚAnnoying.â
At the previous party, Raul had disappeared after the emperorâs greeting, not appearing to welcome her. She had thought perhaps he was avoiding her out of pride after she rejected him.
âYou seem to be doing well.â
âNo. Thanks to Prince Khalid, Iâve been comfortable.â
Belia refused to say even a polite âthanks to you.â Raul gave a bitter smile.
âAm I making you uncomfortable?â
âYes. You are.â
Belia answered bluntly.
âIs it because I proposed to you?â
Belia sighed exaggeratedly.
âYour Highness, even us talking like this will become a topic of gossip.â
âBeliaâŚâ
Raul murmured her name softly.
But Belia was firm.
âI never gave you permission to say my name.â
She had only stepped out to rest a bit, and now this trouble. Why was Raul here?
âYouâre still as cold as ever.â
âI have no reason to be kind to Your Highness.â
His smile faltered at her icy words.
ââŚIâve always wondered,â Raul began,
âAs you said, hearts can change. Isnât Khalid the same?â
He genuinely seemed confused. Perhaps he had asked this many times before, and Belia had never answered properly.
âWas I really nothing to you?â
Raulâs pained expression drew a cold laugh from Belia as she finally spoke.
Khalif where are you âŚ.the other dog is saying stupid crazy things âŚ.go stop him
The only reason heâs may think heâs âsincereâ for her now is because his brother has her and he feels like she was stolen from him. Like an item. He doesnât actually love her. If he did, he wouldnât have treated her that way in the first life, and he wouldnât have pressured her in this life when she turned him down. Heâs just jealous, and itâs gross.
