Chapter 6
âGasp!â
I opened my eyes wide.
âW-where am I?â
All I could see was an unfamiliar ceiling.
âI was definitely with Mister Paul, right in front of the northern gate!â
I was⊠but? What happened after that?
Think⊠thinkâŠ
âWaaah!â
I lost Mister Paul!
âOh, goodness! Hani! Haniel!! That crazy bird just kidnapped our baby!â
âUuuuuuuugh?â
That was right.
It was great that Iâd made it all the way to the north while bonding with Mister Paul like war buddies, butâŠ
A giant bird suddenly appeared in front of the northern gate, pecked me when I leaned out the carriage window, and flew away with me.
âSave me! Please save me!â
After struggling for a long while, I realized âmonster = demonic energy = weak against divine power,â so I immediately took out a divine power sticker.
When the bird landed on a tree, I quickly slapped the sticker onto myselfâŠ
âSKREEEE!â
The nasty bird spat me out like a seed.
âAt least I didnât get hurt too badlyâŠâ
The branches broke one after another with loud cracks, and they seemed to have cushioned my fall.
âAww, what a waste of divine power. More importantly⊠where am I?â
I looked around. The place where Iâd woken up was a small house.
Who had saved me?
Just then.
âMy, you certainly know how to make an entrance.â
A voice came from somewhere. I jumped to my feet.
âOh dear. You shouldnât get up so suddenly. Are you feeling all right?â
An old woman with completely white hair came bustling over.
âW-whoâŠâ
âLetâs see. Hmm, you still have a bit of a fever⊠but it doesnât look like youâve suffered any major injuries. But goodness, child. Why on earth did you enter the mistlands alone? Did you get lost?â
âD-did you save me, Grandma?â
The old woman looked as though sheâd just heard something ridiculous.
âNo? The grand dukeâŠâ
âGrandma, I need salt.â
âGah! That startled me!â
A manâs voice had suddenly come from nowhere!
Only then did I realize there was another person in the room besides the old woman and me.
I peeked my head out and saw a man sitting by the window in the distance.
He was sitting sideways in a chair, eating stew.
âIs he Grandmaâs son?â
But why was he wearing a black robe pulled all the way over his head in broad daylight?
âOh, donât tell meâŠâ
I immediately realized what kind of person he was.
Iâd heard that there were young men in this world who shut themselves away in their rooms, voluntarily cut themselves off from society, and continued relying on their parents for 100% of their financial needs even after growing up.
âAw, Iâm sure everyone has their own circumstances. Itâs just a little different from my ideal lifestyle.â
Iâm an independent, spirited child.
My circumstances are completely different from his.
Without a word, Grandma took out some salt from somewhere and placed it on her sonâs table.
The young man sprinkled the salt over his stew and went back to eating.
âCanât he at least get his own salt?â
Had he outsourced not only his finances but his basic life skills too?
Just as I decided it would be best to avoid any deep conversations with him, Grandma came back over to me.
âSo, where were we? You asked if I saved you?â
âYesâŠâ
âNo? His Grace the grand duke was the one who brought you here. He went into the mistlands and said heâd caught some kind of starfishâŠâ
âWhaaaaaaaaaat?â
Just as I thought!
My eyes widened.
Iâd wondered who that blurry figure Iâd seen at the end was, but I guess it was the grand duke!
âThen, then!â
I frantically turned my head from side to side.
âCould this be near the grand dukeâs castleâŠ?!â
âHey. Pass me that cup of water.â
My words were abruptly cut off again.
âThere was sand mixed in with the salt. Hah, those southern bastardsâŠâ
I shot another glance at the shut-in young man.
Heâs⊠kind of pathetic! He looks pretty sturdy, too!
âThis seems like a terrible influence on my developing values, so I absolutely, absolutely, absolutely must avoid having any deep conversations with him!â
After Grandma brought the young man his cup of water, she answered me.
âYou asked if this is near the grand dukeâs castle? Well, yes. This is Bethel Village.â
My eyes widened.
âThank goodness! Itâs a village with the grand dukeâs castle nearby!â
Iâd safely made it to the heart of the north!
âWhat? Child, did you come here on purpose?â
âYes!â
I sprang to my feet, clenched my fists, and spoke with all my strength.
âI actually came here to meet His Grace the grand duke!â
âHmm? Really?â
âYes! So, could you take me to the grand dukeâs castle? Or at least tell me how to get there! Iâll polish your shoes in exchange! Iâll make them sparkle!â
âNo, childâŠâ
Then, thump! The hopeless sonâs spoon hit the table.
âHah, why does this soup taste like this? Itâs not getting any better. CamilâŠâ
âUgh, mister!â
ââŠMister?â
I couldnât take it anymore!
âTh-then let me do it!! Why do you keep making Grandma do everything?!â
He might kick me in the butt for being a cheeky brat, but⊠some things just had to be said.
It was getting harder and harder to watch that poor old woman wait on him as though it were second nature every time he said a word! Just how badly had he been mistreating her?!
âGrandma isnât your servant!â
At that moment, the man turned toward us.
Iâd only noticed it now, but the man was enormous. And simply turning his body toward me gave off an incredible sense of pressure. He had a physique that didnât suit a shut-in at all!
âShe is.â
His deep voice came casually.
ââŠHuh?â
âMy housekeeper means⊠isnât she my subordinate?â
Housekeeper
âWhat do you think, Camilla.â
âPlease donât spill crumbs everywhere. Itâll be a pain to clean up later.â
The old woman answered casually.
âHuh?â
The man slowly removed his robeâs hood.
Revealing jet-black hair.
Sharp, rugged features with striking, well-defined lines.
My eyes slowly blinked.
It was a face Iâd seen a few times through the window in my previous life. Of course⊠he looked much younger now.
The man stood up.
âIâm returning all the salt brought in from the south.â
Then he approached me. He was so tall that even standing straight on the bed, I had to crane my neck all the way back to look up at him.
âHey, starfish.â
âIâm n-not a starfishâŠâ
Heâs scary! No, heâs not scary!
âIâm HanielâŠâ
âYou look like you came here because you have nowhere else to go.â
How did he know?
âA kid like you will be dead in⊠a day or two?â
The grand duke poked me in the forehead with his finger.
âSo go back. Sorry, but thereâs no one here to take care of a kid like you. Camilla, later, take her to the nearest territoryâŠâ
âLooking for territory residents! Location! Grand Duke Vertusâs Territory!â
I squeezed my eyes shut and shouted.
âBasic benefits! House provided, land provided, 100% tax exemption for the next year upon relocation! Eligibility! Anyone!â
ââŠ?â
âAny-one!â
ââŠ?â
âHello, Iâm Anyone!â
I threw both hands into the air. In my hands was the northern relocation brochure Iâd looked at until it was worn to pieces.
The grand duke looked dumbfounded for a moment. Then he asked Camilla, the old housekeeper.
âDidnât you throw away all those brochures?â
âLooks like there was one left somewhere. Sir Brad would have a fit if he knew. It feels like only yesterday that he was reported for violating advertising regulations and spent time in prison instead of paying the fineâŠâ
Whatever she said, I took another deep breath and launched into my introduction.
âMy name is Haniel! Iâm six years old! My hobby is eating bread, and my specialty is eating bread! My dream is to own a bakery! The reason Iâm applying to become a territory resident here is because I want a house and land! For reference, my goal is to eat about three breads a day!â
âIs that a bread introduction or a self-introduction?â
âAnyway, I wanna live here! Itâs my dream!!â
Vasily stared at me for a moment before turning away. He picked up the sword heâd left nearby and casually waved his hand.
âYeah. Itâs called a dream because it doesnât come true.â
ââŠâ
âThen eat a bowl of stew and go home.â
His back grew farther away.
No! I couldnât fail here!
âMaster!â
I grabbed onto his pants.
âWhat are you saying? Get lost.â
âMaaaster!â
âAt least call me Lord of the Territory! Grandma, why are you looking at me like that? This wasnât my idea!â
âMy lord! Please!â
But he said theyâd give me a house and land!
âI can live by myself! I came here because I want to live really, really well all on my own!â
âDo you actually hear yourself right nowâŠâ
I wrapped both arms around his thigh in earnest. It was so hard that it was difficult to hold on, but I sat down on his foot anyway and became a 13-kilogram ankle weight.
âWhy is this kid so strong? Hah, ha⊠what was your name again? All I remember is bread. Was it Hippo? Bread-eating Hippo? Hey, Hippo. Arenât you going to move?â
âI-Iâm not Hippooooo. Iâm Haniel⊠Please!â
âWe donât accept six-year-olds as territory residents.â
âNo age discriminationâŠ! It says âanyoneâ under eligibility!â
âIt doesnât. Iâm adding an age restriction from now on.â
âBut I have the version without an age restriction! Youâre responsible for this announcement! Youâre making things difficult for me!â
âGrandma, get her off me! Iâve been bitten by a hippo!â
âWhy? Sheâs doing a wonderful job cleaning the floor. Thatâs it, both of you are doing great.â
The old housekeeper laughed as she tidied up around us.
Encouraged by her support, I sat on the grand dukeâs foot and diligently swept the floor with my butt.
âCome to think of it, is clinging to the grand duke of the north like this really the right thing to do?â
Is this what it means to⊠not stand out⊠and quietly blend in
Things had gone completely differently from my plan.
Whatever, I donât care anymore!
Squeeeeeeeze.
âPlease accept me!â
âNo! Iâm sending you to the territory down there!â
But the grand duke was just as stubborn as I was.
So in the end, I had no choice but to bring out the real reason Iâd been hiding.
âIâll teach you how to farm in the north!â
He stopped dead.
The red eyes instantly became cold.
Seeing that, I finally realized that the grand duke had been deliberately holding back his strength this whole time for my sake.
My body trembled, and I was scared.
But I squeezed my eyes shut and shouted.
âFarming!!â
ââŠâ
âYou need it, donât you?â
