Chapter 01
A famous novelist once said this:
Characters in a novel? Who would ever want to become one of those?
Back then, I thought it was just a witty answer. I never imagined it would become my problem.
âCharlotte, I love you.â
Drip.
The black tea I had been holding in my mouth streamed straight down.
âHow could I not have realized it? My true love was never Leonie Schmidtâit was youâŠ.â
Golden hair that gleamed as if brushed with honey, fresh green eyes, a dazzling face that could pass for a sculpture.
âPlease accept my feelings.â
What is this?
Why is he standing right in front of me?
âFa⊠Fabian?â
âYes. Your Fabian.â
âOh my god.â
Crash!
âCharlotte!â
The teacup slipped from my hand and shattered. The piercing sound jolted me back to my senses.
âAre you hurt anywhere? Guards! Is there no oneâ!â
âWait, wait!â
I waved my hands frantically and asked,
âWhat⊠did you say my name was?â
âWhat is wrong, Charlotte?â
Charlotte.
Thatâs the name of the villainess in my novel.
And heâs the male lead from my novel.
I looked once at Fabian standing before me, once at the lavish reception room of the crown princeâs palace, once at the teacup across the table. Then, with my other hand, I felt along the hem of my dress. Inside the pocket, my fingers brushed against a small vial.
What is this?
Am I dreaming?
âMy goodness.â
Slap!
I raised my hand and smacked my cheek.
It hurt.
âCharlotte! Are you all right? You look pale. Shall I call a physician?â
ââŠDid you?â
âPardon?â
âDid you really drink it all? That black tea?â
âDidnât we just drink it together?â
âDamn itâŠ.â
No, noâjust one drop of that makes you fall madly in love with the first person you see. If Charlotte showed up acting suspicious, you were supposed to throw her out. Why did you drink tea with her?!
âSpit it out! Hurry!â
âAh, Charlotte. That hurts.â
I jumped up and pounded Fabian on the back, but of course, the tea he had already swallowed wasnât coming back up.
âWhat do I doâŠ.â
All the strength drained from my body.
Becoming the villainess in my own novel wasnât bad enoughânow Iâd even brainwashed the male lead with a magic potion?
Does that make any sense?
Noâhe just drank it, so if I act fast, maybe I can fix this. Charlotte is the greatest mage in the capital, after all. There has to be a counter-spell.
âYour Highness, please look here for a moment.â
âYes, if you wish.â
âThis is really badâŠ.â
Fabian is listening to Charlotte.
Normally, he should be glaring at her with open contempt, like he doesnât even want to exchange words with her. So why do his eyes look like theyâre dripping with honey? Get a grip.
I felt like crying, but I clenched my teeth and held out my hand.
âAll right, Your Highness. Iâm going to undo the brainwashing now. Youâll go back to hating me like youâre supposed to. Got it? Hup.â
ââŠâŠ.â
âHup.â
A dark purple mist flowed from my hand, circled Fabian, and then vanished.
It didnât work.
Come to think of it, Charlotte made this potion herself. Of course it wouldnât be easy to undo.
âCharlotte, just what are you trying to show me by acting so adorably? Now that I look closer, your hands are quite pretty and delicate.â
With a look like he was utterly smitten, Fabian gently brushed the back of my hand.
Stop it. That gives me goosebumps.
âUm, Your Highness? Something is seriously going wrong right now, so if you could just wait a momentââ
âMy beloved Charlotte. Donât say another word.â
Cutting me off, Fabian slowly stepped closer, blinking his moist eyes. His large hand softly cupped my cheek.
What is this.
This moodâdonât tell meâ
âNo! Get away from me!â
âCharlotte?â
ThudâI shoved Fabian away and sprang to my feet.
âI donât want to kiss you, Fabian!â
You shameless little bratâthis is downright immoral!
Iâm doomed.
Iâve thought about it at least a hundred times more, and Iâm completely, utterly doomed.
âWhy did it have to be CharlotteâŠ.â
If Iâd at least become some random extra with nothing to do with the protagonists. But noâan unnecessarily powerful villainess who ruthlessly shreds the leadsâ mental health.
Is this really okay?
When Iâm the author?
âHaâŠ.â
Outside the carriage window, the beautiful capital passed byâexactly as I had described it in my novel.
âHic.â
I was so miserable my nose was running.
âAll right, calm down. The damage is already done. Until this is resolved, the Count and Countess Schmidtâand Leonieâmust never find out.â
If the Count and Countess learn about Charlotteâs atrocities, itâs over. Leonie will faint, the Count and Countess will try to tear me apart, and once the chaos reaches the Emperorâs ears, Iâll be put on trial and executed.
Maybe the original, insane Charlotte could endure that kind of suffering. I absolutely couldnât.
âOkay. Hit and run.â
Iâll go back to the estate, pack my things, and then fleeâquickly and quietlyâto some remote place with beautiful mountains and rivers. From afar, Iâll cheer on my childrenâs love.
Since Iâm a villainess destined to exit anyway, disappearing early will make everyone happier.
âRight. Iâm the authorâcanât I at least manage that? I can do this.â
I dreamed that dream.
âŠYes, I had dreamed it.
Smack!
With a stinging pain, my head snapped to the side. I froze in the exact position of opening the door to the countâs residence.
âYou sly, vicious girl. I never should have let you into this house.â
As if sheâd been waiting, Countess Schmidt stood at the door, grinding her teeth.
âI took in and raised a worthless creature with nothing but magic, and this is how you repay me? What kind of filthy stunt did you pull?!â
In her hand dangled a letter with its seal torn to shredsâa long, passionate love letter Fabian had sent to Charlotte.
âAh⊠His Highness sent that?â
I just got home.
When did he even send it?
Then a rough hand struck again. This time, instead of slapping my cheek, she grabbed my hair and shook my head violently.
âUgh!â
âYou wretched thing! I knew it. How dare you use filthy magic to push Leonie aside and try to become Crown Princess?!â
Why is she so strong?!
It felt like my scalp was about to be ripped off.
Thrown off balance by the violent shaking, I was flung around before collapsing onto the floor.
âWait, pleaseâlet goâ!â
âHow dare you covet my daughterâs place?! If it werenât for your tricks, why would His Highness send you a love letter?!â
That was when it happened.
Rollâthud.
Something fell to the floor.
âMother⊠Charlotte. What is all thisâŠ?â
âLeâLeonie? I mean, this isââ
âAhâŠ.â
âEek! Leonie! Wake up!â
âMy lady!â
âWhat are you all doing? Get that thing out of my sight this instant!â
âYes, madam!â
The servants crowded around Leonie, while the knights who had rushed in bound me roughly. Forced face-down onto the floor, I let out a hollow laugh.
Haha.
What a complete mess.
