Chapter : 08
âBig sister, whatâs your name?â
âLucia Agnes.â
âIâm Henry Peneus! Big sister, letâs get married!â
âWhat?â
âHenry!â
âUwahh! Big brother!â
Before Lucia could even react, Herwin hurriedly pulled Henry away.
Henry struggled in Herwinâs grasp, shouting for him to let go.
At that moment, Lucia and Herwinâs eyes met.
A face that felt strangely nostalgicâit was both familiar and unfamiliar, leaving them with a strange feeling. Just as Herwin opened his mouth, startled and unsure, Lucia spoke first.
âHerwin, itâs been a while.â
âHuh? Oh⊠yeah, itâs been a while.â
âHerwin! Youâve grown so much! Iâm not short myself, but still!â
Lucas, who stood beside Lucia, suddenly poked his face out. Herwinâs eyes widened for a moment, then he let out a small laugh.
âItâs been a while for you too, brother.â
âOh, you remember me?â
âOf course I do. We were in the capital together for over a year.â
âReally? Lucia barely remembered. Since youâre the same age as her, I thought youâd forget too.â
Since Herwin greeted them warmly, Lucas assumed he remembered everything, unlike Lucia. But maybe that wasnât the case.
When Herwin turned his gaze toward Lucia, she awkwardly scratched her cheek.
âUhh! Let gooo!â
Henry finally wriggled free from Herwinâs grasp and clung to Lucia like a cicada.
âHenryâ?â
Herwin spoke with a frightening yet gentle tone, and Henry flinched. His sharp red eyes, framed by softly curved lashes, looked intimidating.
âIs this how you behave toward a guest?â
âU-uh⊠th-thatâs becauseâŠâ
No matter how stubborn a five-year-old was, he couldnât ignore his older brotherâs words. As Henry grew frightened, Lucia gently patted his back.
âI donât mind. Henry, do you want to play with me?â
ââŠYeah! Big sister!â
âThen letâs hold hands instead of clinging to me. Iâll play with you lots.â
Since it was hard to keep her balance with Henry clinging to her, Lucia smiled and reached out her hand. Henryâs eyes sparkled.
âOkay! Okay!â
He grinned widely, still clinging to her. Herwin, however, didnât look pleased at all.
He glared at Henry, but when his eyes met Luciaâs, he quickly looked away.
The reunion of once inseparable childhood friends wasnât as smooth as others might have expected.
There was a faint awkwardness between themâunfamiliar and uncomfortable. And yet, within that atmosphere lingered anticipation and a subtle thrill.
âWow, your castle is so huge. Iâve never been to a place like this before.â
âRight? I guess itâs because your family rules the North. Itâs as big as the imperial palace!â
Lucia and Lucas followed Herwin and Henry as they toured the ducal estate.
Herwin walked ahead, guiding them, while Henry stubbornly held onto Luciaâs hand and stuck by her side.
âBig sister, big sister. They say a scary witch used to live here. So ghosts still appear sometimes.â
âReally? No wonder it feels a little spooky.â
When Lucia shivered playfully, Henryâs eyes hardened.
âAre you scared? Donât worry! Iâll protect you!â
âYou havenât changed one bit, have you? You never wanted to leave Luciaâs side back then either.â
âWhen you become my bride, Iâll give you everything!â
âHey, you brat! Who said you could marry her? Iâm not giving my sister to you, so dream on.â
âUgh, donât get in the way!â
Lucas laughed and pressed down on Henryâs head.
Henry swung his arms in protest, but as a five-year-old, he couldnât possibly overpower a ten-year-old boy.
Finally freed from Henry, Lucia drifted quietly toward Herwin.
But when she came closer, Herwin pressed his lips together tightly.
Unlike the playful Lucas and Henry, the two of them couldnât bring themselves to say anything.
Lucia felt unbearably awkward. Maybe she was the only one feeling this way? She lifted her gazeâ
Clickâ
Their eyes met.
Startled, both of them flinched and quickly looked away.
Her heart pounded, but then she wondered, What are we even doing? She cautiously turned her head back.
âUmâŠâ
âHm?â
Herwin answered awkwardly, as if feeling the same tension.
âUh⊠have you been doing well?â
âHuh? Oh, yeah, I guess soâŠâ
The conversation trailed off and silence returned. Then Herwin spoke first.
âYouâve been well too, right?â
âMe? Yeah⊠Lately, I got a new piano teacher, so Iâve been learning piano. What about you?â
âMm⊠just the usual. Lessons and etiquette from tutors. And swordsmanship training.â
âSwordsmanship? Do you want to be a knight?â
âNot exactly a knight. I want to become a great swordsman like my father.â
Herwinâs stiff expression softened slightly.
âWell, Duke Peneus is really famous. He was called⊠Sword somethingâŠâ
âSword Master. The idol of all swordsmen. If Fatherâs around, he can defeat any enemy! Not only that, a Sword Master can freely control aura! My fatherâs aura isââ
Herwin suddenly got carried away, excitedly praising his father. Halfway through, he stopped when he noticed Luciaâs wide, curious eyes.
âAh, s-sorry⊠I got too excitedâŠâ
âNo, itâs fine. I can tell you really admire your father.â
âWell⊠who wouldnât?â
âMe too! My dadâs the best in the world for me too!â
Herwin scratched his head awkwardly, but when he met Luciaâs bright smile, he couldnât help but smile back.
The awkwardness between them slowly gave way to a more comfortable warmth.
âWaaahh! Big brother!â
A sudden cry interrupted the moment.
Henry came running, sobbing, and threw himself into Luciaâs arms. Although he had called Herwin earlier, the one he clung to was Lucia.
âB-big sister! Scold that mean brother for me!â
Tears welled in Henryâs eyes as he pointed accusingly at Lucas.
âMm⊠what did my brother say to you?â
âHe said Iâm too young to marry you! But I am going to marry you!â
âWas I wrong? Besides, I already told youâIâm not giving my sister to anyone.â
Lucas teased him mercilessly, draping his arm over Luciaâs shoulder.
Henry grew more upset and started yelling at him to stop.
âBrother, donât tease him too much. Heâs still littleâŠâ
âHahaha, sorry, sorry. But his reactions are just too funny.â
âYouâre the worst! I hate you!â
âHmph, what will you do if you hate me? Iâm Luciaâs brother.â
When Lucas leaned close to Luciaâs face, the family resemblance was strikingâthey looked so much alike anyone could tell they were siblings.
Henry fell silent, unable to argue against the obvious.
âOh, itâs almost dinnertime. Should we head to the dining hall?â
Herwin cut in to change the subject.
âWhat time is it now?â
âHalf past six.â
âEh, itâs only that? Then why am I so hungry?â
âWell, weâve been touring the castle for three hours straight.â
Unlike awkward Lucia, Herwin chatted easily with Lucas.
Lucia quietly watched as the two walked further ahead.
âBig sister, arenât you coming?â
âHuh? Oh, yeah, letâs go.â
At Henryâs call, Lucia quickly grabbed his hand and followed after the two boys.
Five days passed since they had arrived at the ducal estate.
The Agnes siblings and the Peneus brothers had grown close, just like in the old days in the capital. The initial awkwardness was gone.
But there was one difference: Herwin no longer stuck by Luciaâs side all the time.
Whether because his memories hadnât all returned, or because Lucas was closer to his own age, Herwin spent more time with him.
Still, it wasnât as if he avoided Lucia.
He got along with her, joked around, and playedâjust not like the inseparable friends they once had been.
âBig sister! Big sister! Read this to me!â
Lucia had been watching Herwin laugh brightly with Lucas when Henry tugged at her.
âSure, what should I read?â
âThis one! Youâre in this book!â
âHuh? Me?â
âYeah! Look, right here!â
Henry plopped into her lap and opened the book to a page.
On it was a woman with brown hair and blue eyes, sitting in the forest, smelling flowers. She looked just like Lucia.
Huh? Why does this feel familiar?
Though she had never seen this picture or this storybook before, an odd sense of déjà vu washed over her, as if she had lived this moment before.
Lucia stared intently at the illustration, curious about the strange familiarity.
Henry, who had been chattering away, noticed the silence and looked up. His mouth dropped open without thinking.
Luciaâs clear blue eyes seemed lost in thought, tinged with melancholy.
Henryâs chest tingled.
Mom said if you like something, you should mark it as yours first.
Before anyone else could take it away, he decided to leave his mark.
Smoochâ
The noisy room suddenly fell silent, making the sound of the kiss echo loudly.
Lucia, caught off guard, blinked in surprise. Lucas and Herwin, who had been laughing together, also froze with wide eyes.
âBig sisterâs mine now.â
ââŠThis feels oddly familiar too.â
Lucia touched her cheek awkwardly, looking down at Henry.
âY-you little brat!â
Lucasâs face turned red as he rushed to pull Henry off her.
But even now, the moment gave Lucia the same strange déjà vu as in a dream. Almost instinctively, her eyes drifted toward Herwin.
It felt like he should have been the one to pull Henry away from herânot Lucas.
âSorry my little brother bothered you. He must really like you. Normally he doesnât act this way.â
âHuh? Oh⊠itâs fine. It happens.â
âIâll scold him properly. He wonât do it again.â
Herwin stood and moved to break up Henry and Lucasâs squabble.
ââŠThis doesnât feel right.â
An inexplicable sense of loss crept over her.
Herwinâs response was natural, of course. But for some reason, she wished he had gotten angry instead of calmly reasoning with his brother.
Ba-dump, ba-dump, ba-dumpâŠ!
Her quiet heart began to pound loudly.
The rapid beat carried with it not just discomfort, but a confusing, unfamiliar emotion. Lucia had no idea how to define what she was feeling now.
