Chapter 3
âWhat?â
For a moment, her heart dropped and sank.
âOur child?â
With trembling eyes, she looked at the two of them.
Before she realized it, Elodie had already leaned her face into Damienâs arms, whispering in a coy voice.
âWhat if our child ends up becoming an illegitimate child like this? Iâm scared.â
Damien, holding Elodie in his arms, replied,
âDonât worry. Thereâs no way Iâd let our child become illegitimate. We just need to get rid of Anesa before the child is born.â
At the same time, Damien pressed a kiss to the back of Elodieâs neck, which was fully exposed.
âHaa, Damien.â
A breath mixed with pleasure slipped from Elodieâs lips.
It would be accurate to say her heart had been butchered. They were half-sisters, yet it was the betrayal of the sister she had trusted and relied on in a foreign land, and the husband she loved.
Anesa shook her head as if she couldnât believe it. In the shock of the moment, had she unconsciously taken a step back?
She accidentally stepped on the hem of her dress and fell. With a loud thud, the moans that had been coming from the room abruptly stopped.
Only then did Anesa come to her senses and try to get up to run away. At that moment, the door flew open.
âAnesa!â
Damien and Elodie were looking down at her with startled expressions.
But only for a moment. Damien quickly composed his face and helped the fallen Anesa to her feet.
âWhy are you lying here? Are you alright?â
As if nothing had happened, he whispered in a gentle voice.
âIf youâre not feeling well, we should call a doctorââ
Just as he reached out to brush Anesaâs cheek, Anesa sharply slapped his hand away.
âYou filthy bastard. How could you, with my sisterâŠâ
ââŠAnesa.â
For a brief moment, Damienâs eyes trembled in surprise. Soon, his expression hardened coldly as he spoke.
âSo you saw everything after all?â
The tone that had just been worrying about Anesa had disappeared, replaced by a cold voice.
âWell, that might actually be better. I was wondering how I should tell you.â
ââŠâŠâ
âIâll just be honest. As you know, your reputation isnât good right now. Itâd be impossible for you to become empress like this.â
âWhat are you trying to say?â
âDivorce me. Go down to some provincial estate and live quietly, or return to Edelite.â
âDamien! You⊠How could you do this to meâŠ!â
At her desperate cry, Elodie, who had been silently watching the two of them, cut in.
âWhat can we do, Anesa. Even if you became empress, it wouldnât benefit Damien at all. Even now, people outside are shouting for you to be killed, arenât they? And the child in your bellyâŠâ
Elodie looked at Anesaâs stomach with mocking eyes.
âHonestly, even you donât know whether itâs Damienâs child or not, do you? In that state, how could you dare think of becoming empress? Thereâs a limit to how shameless someone can be.â
âSister!â
Elodie also knew. She knew that Anesa had taken on that disgrace because Damien had ordered her to.
And the one who had comforted her then, who had blamed Damien, had been Elodie herself.
âHow could you do this to meâŠâ
It felt as if everything had collapsed. The world she loved and believed in seemed to crumble into dust.
Anesa shook her head in disbelief.
âI wonât forgive this. Iâll tell everyone everything!â
She wouldnât just endure this silently. At the very least, she wanted the world to know that guiding the First Prince had been Damienâs scheme.
Even if she couldnât stop him from becoming emperor, she could at least stain Damienâs reign.
The world needed to know he was a vile man who would even sell his own wife to become emperor.
With those words, Anesa ran with all her strength.
âAnesa!â
Damien chased after her. But it wasnât easy for her to run far with her pregnant body.
By the time Anesa reached the stairs, Damien grabbed her arm.
Then he shouted at her.
âCalm down! Think about this realistically! This isnât the time to act emotionally like this!â
Until the very end, he blamed Anesa and demanded her silence. There wasnât a trace of apology or guilt on his face.
Smack!
Raising her hand, Anesa struck his cheek with all her strength.
âYou despicable bastard.â
With that low curse, Damienâs head snapped to the side.
âFor whose sake do you think I did all that? For whose sake do you think Iâve been enduring this humiliation?! How could you, how could youâ!â
But Anesa couldnât finish her words.
âHow dare you!â
Slap!
Damien struck Anesa across the cheek.
