Chapter : 76
âYou should answer, Ed.â
Emperor Edward, seasoned by years on the throne, instantly realized that his response in this moment could decide his sonâs future.
Valereâno, Duke Halbernâwas smiling, but there was nothing warm in that smile.
âLook at him, acting all friendly while radiating this icy aura.â
Gulp.
As a worried father, he chose to stall.
âWeâre in the middle of discussing important state affairs right nowâŚâ
âI asked if your son likes my daughter.â
ââŚâ
âShould I cut him down?â
ââŚâ
My son! Your future father-in-law is a lunaticâavoid him at all costs!
ââŚLetâs first establish the cause and effect behind your question. What on earth did you hear?â
âWhat did I see, you mean.â
âFine, then. What did you see?â
At the Crown Princeâs tea party, he had seen the little crown prince holding on desperately, clinging with affection.
Empress Azenyâs decision to throw Duke Halbern out had been excellentâif not for that, he mightâve grabbed the crown prince by the scruff of his neck and spirited him off into some hidden corner of the palace.
âMy sonâs good enough, isnât he? No, heâs outstanding. In that sense, how about we become in-laws?â
Duke Halbern tilted his head.
âYouâve gotten more jokes since we last met.â
âIâm serious.â
ââŚâ
His gaze sharpened.
âCan I kill him?â
âOnly if you want to be branded a regicide.â
âYou think Iâd go through all that trouble just to kill you?â
âIâll remind you, I am the emperor.â
Duke Halbern twitched his fingers but then smiled. According to his habitual calculations, it was entirely possibleâbut he had no real intention of becoming the emperorâs assassin.
Still, a warning was necessary.
He glared at the emperorâs hidden guardians lurking in the shadows.
The foolish shadows, brimming with killing intent, trembled.
âThatâs far enough.â
âTch.â
Wiping his smile away, Duke Halbern clicked his tongue.
âMy daughterâs not an option.â
âWhy not?â
âBecause my daughter must be happy.â
âWhat nonsenseâŚâ Edward stroked his chin, making his own deduction.
âSo you mean Arerineâs consent comes first.â
âI mean she can never be forced into it. Thereâs no way a life trapped in this palace could make her happy.â
âAzeny says sheâs happy.â
âMaybe she has the constitution of an empress.â
âAzeny once told me happiness is subjective.â
Utter nonsense.
Duke Halbern smiled silently. It was breathtakingly beautiful, but Emperor Edward shivered and rubbed his arm.
âLetâs discuss this formally another time.â
âFine, try it.â
âŚEdward swore to himself heâd double the security around his son. Otherwise, he risked losing his carefully raised heir in the most ridiculous way.
âAnyway, about the dragon.â
âHm?â
Now that the immediate fire was out, another problemâone that had been plaguing himârose up again. Edward groaned.
âDo you have any idea how much trouble youâve caused me? All eyes are on the spoils the Saren Knights brought back. Foreign envoys keep asking whether dragon materials will be at the Founding Festival auction. Even the Sky Tower inquiredâasking if they can get dragon blood!â
Under the subtle pressure, Duke Halbern chuckled silently.
âSpoils of war? I wouldnât know.â
âNot even offering anything to the imperial family?â
âA little. I already used up most of my share.â
He gestured vaguely. There was no need to see what he meant.
He must have used it for trades.
âEven a little will do. Offer it upâIâll make sure youâre not disappointed.â
âYes, Your Majesty.â
âGood.â
Edwardâs face brightened at the thought of finally having some breathing room.
But stillâ
âThe Sky Tower, huh.â
Hearing the long-unspoken name piqued his interest. Edward added:
âTheyâll be visiting during the Founding Festival. On the last day, after the ball.â
âSo, right when the auction is held. Avoiding hassle but seizing all the gains, is it?â
Of course, such esteemed mages flocking together deserved the warmest welcome. Still, something felt off.
âYou mean you donât know their reason for coming? We didnât invite them.â
âHard to say. Iâve been holed up in the northern fortress, after all.â
Still, if he were to hazard a guessâ
âMaybe the Empireâs barrier has gone missing?â
Edwardâs face twisted again.
âI was only throwing out a guess. Those planet-worshipping zealots wonât budge unless itâs something on that scale.â
âGood grief.â
Edward wanted to dismiss it, but his imperial intuition rang alarm bells.
He rubbed his forehead and penned a note with one hand. A magical flash sent it offâthe order likely to confirm whether any barrier had vanished.
âThis empireâs too vast and riddled with crises. I can never let my guard down.â
At last, Edward realized why his predecessor had chosen to abdicate in favor of even a reckless man like him.
He too longed to raise his son, Pession, quickly and pass the throne.
âWhat about the northern fortress? Will it be fine without you?â
âFor now, yes. I went into the Abyss and turned it upside down.â
The monsters there would first have to rebuild their disrupted territory thanks to the Saren Knights.
There were other things he had done too⌠but no need to mention those.
âSigh. And who do I send as your replacementâŚâ
Edward groaned.
As he fussed and whined about wanting to play with Empress Azeny, Duke Halbern finished looking around the inner chamber and turned to him.
âEd.â
âWho should I send, huh? Hm?â
âItâs meeting time. Letâs go.â
Upon his return, Duke Halbern was faced with countless duties.
While he had hidden behind his proxy, Mähenn, invitations had poured in relentlessly. Now, most of those vanished, and nearly all visit requests had stopped.
Some minor procedures and issues remained, but the duke quelled them with Halbernâs prestige and his rightful authority.
Still, some obligations were unavoidable. The first was an imperial audience, and the second was this meeting.
A private council with only the emperor and the five dukes.
âValere, it seems youâve been well.â
The Duke of Muvisc, the Emperorâs sword, and the Duke of Sperom, the Empireâs purse, were present.
âValere!â
Surprisingly, the usually distant Duke Sperom beamed and rushed over.
âI was about to visit Halbern myselfâthis is perfect. Valere, save me! Hand over your share of dragon byproducts to Sperom. Iâll pay handsomelyâmore than the others!â
âYou must be in a rush, Simon. Skipping greetings and jumping to business.â
âWouldnât you be? Iâd lick your boots right now if it meant getting those dragon parts! The entire capitalâs in an uproar!â
âHaha. No need for that.â
Unfortunately, he couldnât give him anything. Those byproducts already belonged to the emperor.
âMy shareâs already offered up. Ask the Saren Knights when they return.â
âNoooâŚâ
Edward waved his hand at the commotion.
âEveryone, take your seats.â
For six years, the Halbern seat had been empty. Now filled again, the four men looked around the table with mixed expressions.
Duke Halbern glanced at the remaining empty chairs.
âTwo seats still unfilled.â
âDuke Gremwat is exploring a newly discovered ruin. And Duke IdichelsâŚâ
Edward shot him a sharp glare.
ââŚis still stuck in another empire, dealing with Regent Lord Roch. Thanks to someone.â
âOh dear.â
Edward narrowed his eyes.
âI mean you.â
âMy regrets.â
Edward pressed further, eyes blazing.
âWhat exactly did you do?â
Six years ago, Duke Idichels had rushed overseas because Regent Lord Roch had gone on an inexplicable rampage.
âWhat did you say or do thatâs made Roch stir up chaos for years, you bastard? Weâre already swamped with monster outbreaks, and now the southern front refuses to stabilize!â
Even under the emperorâs fierce interrogation, Duke Halbern remained calm, like a peaceful sea.
âI didnât say much.â
âWhat, then?! Tell me!â
âI just told him to return my sister.â
Edward clutched his head and roared:
âOf course he went mad, you idiot!â
