Chapter : 73
âIt seems⌠a lot of time really has passed.â
Mehen sat down, lost in thought.
âThe mansion is the same, but the imperial capital has changed a lot.â
What was that bastard trying to say?
Today, Halbern Grand Dukeâs usually violet eyes shone with a crystalline clarity, faint amusement glimmering within them as he looked at Mehen.
âSuddenly, âMomâ?â
Mehen didnât answer.
The man burst into booming laughter, as though to wash everything away with his mirth, but when he got smacked and ended up with a red forehead, he was still laughing, still infuriatingly handsome.
âLook at you. I turn my back for a while and now youâre someoneâs mom. Time really does fly, doesnât it? Who wouldâve thought? Mehen, a mother.â
âIf you want to die, keep talking.â
âOho, a straight-up assassination notice? Thrilling already.â
âWhy do you think it would be an assassination?â
âThen whatâare you going to kill me openly and honorably? That would be refreshing in its own way.â
âStop spouting nonsense.â
âSo, whoâs the kidâs father? Donât tell meâitâs me?â
Pfft.
It was a sudden blow. The maids and butlers burst into laughter without restraint, and Mehenâs face burned with shame, though she endured it.
âSo that means youâre my wife, Mehen?â
âDo you want to die?â
Her instant retort only made the Grand Duke laugh harder, until he was nearly out of breath.
âWhy so cold, dear? Donât treat your husband so harshly after so long.â
âShut your mouth.â
âBut when did we even get married?â
âI said shut it.â
The veins in Mehenâs forehead throbbed. If Arellyn hadnât been sitting beside her, she wouldâve already lost her temper and beaten him with whatever was at hand.
âBut I canât do that.â
It would be bad for the childâs education, and harmful to her emotional well-being.
Mehen desperately suppressed the urge to kill.
âHah, this is fun.â
âOh, is it?â
The Grand Duke rested his chin on his hand, swallowing his regret, because he knew if he pushed any further, she really might strangle him.
His gaze slid over, toward the small child who had clung tightly to Mehen from earlier, refusing to let go.
Flinch.
The child immediately hid behind Mehen, using her as a shield, and the Dukeâs expression darkened.
âHm.â
That obvious display of interest was enough to finally push Mehen to sigh, sensing the subtle tension rising.
âThat bastard.â
âArel, go on and get some rest.â
Buried almost entirely in Mehenâs side, Arellyn peeked out.
âIs it really okay?â
âYes.â
Mehen didnât want to pressure her daughter into anything in this disastrous âfirst meetingâ with her father.
Not while that so-called father was acting like this.
âMmm.â
Arellyn glanced at Mehen, then flicked a nervous look toward the Grand Duke. She seemed too wary to look at him directly.
The Grand Dukeâs expression turned strange at the sight of the little girlâs hesitant deliberation.
âItâs fine. You can go.â
Only when reassured with Mehenâs gentle, kind voice did Arellyn smile, rising from her seat.
âSee you later.â
Her small whisper was filled with trust and faith.
After Mehen gave her a quick hug, the girl left without a backward glance at her father, holding the maidâs hand.
The Grand Duke watched her go, tilting his head.
âDear, our daughter is afraid of me.â
A cushion flew at his face.
âThatâs called retribution, you bastard.â
Mehen finally let her pent-up anger burst.
âSo.â
Mehen pressed her fingers against her temples.
âWhere have you been all this time?â
âAn interrogation the moment I arrive?â
The Grand Duke drooped his handsome eyes in mock weariness, feigning a pitiful look.
âIâm tired, you know.â
âDonât change the subject.â
âUnyielding as ever.â
He pouted childishly before propping his chin up again.
âFine. Go on.â
Mehen tossed that morningâs copy of the Albrecht Times onto the table. The Duke tilted his head.
âWhat exactly have you done this time?â
âWell, itâs not exactly easy to leave the northern fortress unattended.â
âSo you slay a dragon instead?â
âWere you worried about me? Donât. I didnât get hurt, dear.â
âCall me âdearâ one more time, and Iâll sue you for workplace harassment and defamation.â
âSuch a scary reaction.â
He shivered dramatically, grinning all the whileâclearly not scared at all. Dealing with him was exhausting.
Mehen fought down the overwhelming urge to strangle him.
Patience. Patience brings blessingsâŚ
âSo how did you end up becoming a mom?â
âThatâs none of your concern, you irresponsible man.â
âHarsh. Truly harsh.â
She glared, wanting to bite back harder, but knew if she followed his pace, sheâd just fall into his rhythm again. Forcing her temper down, she asked coldly:
âHow did you get here?â
âItâs obvious. You already know.â
Was he saying such a relic really existed?
Mehenâs eyes sharpened. And he never used it until now?
Perhaps sensing her skepticism, the Grand Duke lounged deeper into the sofa, smiling lazily.
âIâm not going anywhere, so no need to stare so intensely.â
âCan I hit you?â
âI wonât let you.â
She threw another cushion. He dodged with a tilt of his head and smiled infuriatingly.
âNo questions? You must have a lot.â
âHa.â
Questions? She had plentyâso many her head might explode.
But the one that came out first was the most important.
âWhy did you come back?â
His violet eyes blinked, long lashes fluttering before lowering.
âYou advised me to, didnât you?â
âFor that alone?â
âDo I need a greater reason?â
It sounded like a joke, but his eyes werenât laughing. They seemed to say more, but Mehen neither wanted to know nor acknowledge it.
âThen you should have come back earlier! I begged you for years to return, and you never showed your faceâuntil now?! Do you really want to die at my hands?!â
âIf itâs by your hand, it would be an honor.â
âStop joking!â
âDo I look like Iâm joking?â
Mehen let out a long, guttural sigh from the depths of her chest.
âForget it. I wonât talk anymore.â
The Grand Duke laughed.
âYouâre laughing? At a time like this?â
âWhy are you so angry?â
âDo I look like I wouldnât be?!â
Causing trouble was one thing, making her clean up after him was anotherâbut there had to be limits.
âSo why did you even go to the northern fortress?â
âFor a deal.â
âA deal? What kind of deal?â
Mehenâs face tensed with unease.
The Grand Duke pressed a finger lightly against his lips and shook his head.
âI canât say. Unfortunately, I made an Oath of Silence.â
Mehenâs expression hardened.
The Oath of Silence was the strictest kind of binding vow. Once sworn, it was impossible to break.
She let out an involuntary sigh as her mind raced.
An Oath of Silence. The Imperial Palace. Halbern.
âWhy?â
What could the Grand Duke Valere possibly lack, that he would strike such a bargain under such extreme conditionsâforced to hole up in the northern fortress?
She wanted an explanation she could accept. But, as always, the Grand Duke only smiled faintly.
âYouâre giving her the medicine properly, arenât you?â
ââŚâŚâ
âItâs precious. Make sure she takes it, alright?â
Mehen froze.
Finally piecing together the connection, she groaned.
âIf you hadnât looked into the source of that mysterious monthly delivery of medicine, you wouldnât be the Mehen I know.â
âYes, I looked into it.â
âAnd what did you find?â
His soft voice was insufferable.
She really felt like hitting him just once would be worth it.
âThe Imperial Palace.â
Her investigation had traced the unknown medicine back to a discreet channel, ending in the palaceâthough the exact location remained shadowy and secretive.
âAnd I left it buried, knowing it would only bring trouble if I dug deeperâŚâ
Now the fatigue weighed even heavier. Rubbing her darkened under-eyes, Mehen spoke in a rare, polite toneâher long-lost respect for her liege briefly returning.
âThat medicine⌠it was your arrangement?â
âWho else would it be?â
His low voice was tender. Mehenâs face twisted in frustration.
âSo youâve been stuck in the northern fortress all this time because of that medicine?â
The Grand Duke only shrugged.
At last, one of the long-unanswered mysteries was finally resolved.
