Chapter 4
The song I made after my composition level went upâ
I had a feeling that Song Joon-shik would like it.
And who could blame me?
It was the first melody I made after reaching Level D, and even I thought it sounded beautiful.
Sure enough, Song Joon-shik praised it.
He even said it was the best song heâd heard all year.
âWait⌠you mean the director?â
When he said we should play it for the executive director, I was stunned.
He was the highest-ranking person in the companyâthe man in charge of everything.
Even Joon-shik rarely showed him songs directly.
âYeah. We need to play this for him. Itâs that good.â
âR-really? You think itâs that good?â
âHonestly, the drums and chords are still a little rough, but that topline⌠itâs amazing.
Itâs catchy for the public and itâs fresh. Thatâs not easy to do.â
âIs it really that good?â
âIâll stake my thirty-year career on itâthis oneâs going to be a hit.â
My hair practically stood on end.
AÂ hit.
My song.
A melody I made spontaneouslyâwithout planning, without hesitationâ
was now being called a hit.
For someone whoâd only ever written mediocre songs his whole life,
this moment was overwhelming.
âThank you, sir. Really, thank you so muchâŚâ
âNo, thank you. You did well, Tae-oh. Youâve worked so hard all this time,
and now youâve finally made something special. Congratulations.â
He patted my shoulder proudly.
I bowed my head over and over in gratitude.
âWhatâs happening? Is this really because my composition level went up?â
Ever since I got that strange status windowâ
the one that appeared when I thought my life was overâ
everything had changed.
For the first time in my life, I was being praised for my music.
âIf I keep leveling up, what could happen next?â
That thought filled me with excitement.
If I could raise my lyrics, composition, and arrangement levels even higherâ
if I could collect more âachievementsââ
maybe I could change my entire life.

After praising my song, Song Joon-shik told me to email it to the executive director.
I did as he asked, then went right back to composing.
Maybe, just maybe, I could raise my level again.
But after that jump from E to D, it didnât move.
Occasionally, messages would pop up saying âComposition EXP increased,â
but there was no level-up.
Well, it made sense.
Leveling up couldnât be that easy.
Still, as long as my experience was growing, Iâd get there eventuallyâ
and working hard was something I knew how to do.
A few hours laterâ
âAh, there it is.â
I smiled as I spotted a familiar yellow bus coming down the street.
It was the kindergarten busâSi-onâs bus.
When it stopped, the teacher stepped down, holding Si-onâs hand.
âSi-on, letâs say hello to Daddy!â
âOkaay!â
âDaddy, Iâm home!â
âWelcome home~!â
She bowed politely, then ran toward me and hugged my leg tight,
rubbing her little face against me.
I gently stroked her hair.
âDid you have fun today?â
âMm-hmm!â
âDid you play well with your friends?â
âYeah! We played dolls, and I listened to teacher too!â
âReally? Thatâs my good girl.â
I smiled, ruffling her hair affectionately.
After saying goodbye to the teacher, we walked down the street hand in handâ
and ended up at a fast food restaurant.
It was Si-onâs favorite place: hamburgers.
When our order came out, we started eating together.
âDaddy, why did we come here today? Arenât we going home?â
She asked while munching her burger.
âHmm? Why? You donât want a hamburger today?â
âNooo, I love hamburgers! French fries too! And cheese sticks are the best!â
âHaha, really?â
âUh-huh! But Daddy usually doesnât buy me hamburgers. You said theyâre bad for me!
So why today?â
âAh, well⌠Daddy had a good day at work today.â
âA good day? What happened?â
Her head tilted to the side, eyes wide and curiousâ
and crumbs all over her lips.
I wiped them off and said,
âNothing big. Daddyâs work went really well today.â
âWork? You mean your songs? Did your song come out good?â
âHaha, yeah. I made a song today that turned out really well.
And not just meâone of Daddyâs seniors said it was really good too.â
âWow! Really? I knew it! My daddyâs the best composer ever!â
She raised both hands in the air, cheering proudly.
That innocent, boundless faith of hersâit melted my heart every time.
âDaddy! Then can your song play here someday?
Like, on the speakers in the hamburger place?â
âHere?â
âYeah! The idol songs play here, right?
So maybe your song can play too!â
Normally, I wouldâve just laughed it off.
But this time, I didnât.
âIf I really have this status window⌠maybe itâs possible.â
Not right away, of course.
But if I kept leveling up my composition, lyric writing, and arrangement skillsâ
if I unlocked more âachievementsââ
Then someday, maybe my song would play in a place like this.
A real hit song.
âYeah, maybe one day it could.â
I smiled with a bit of confidence.
After all, Iâd already proven that leveling up really worked.
âYaaay! I hope that day comes soon!â
âHaha, me too. I really do.â
I pictured itâ
A mega-hit song.
Joining a top agency.
Breaking into the Billboard charts.
Becoming the kind of dad that Si-on could brag about to everyone.
âDaddy! Since youâre happy today, can I have one more cheese stick?â
âWhat? Another one? You already ate two!â
âAww, come on! Itâs a happy day~!â
She pouted, blinking her big eyes at me.
âFine, fine. But then you have to eat your vegetable fried rice for dinner, okay?â
âWith carrots?â
âOf course. Carrots are good for you.â
âUgh⌠okay. Iâll do it for the cheese stick.â
âPromise?â
âPromise!â
She held out her pinky, and I hooked mine with hers.
âAlright then. Since you promised, Iâll get you one more. Wait here, okay?â
âOkay! Iâll sit right here and be good! Hehe!â
She started doing a funny little âworm danceâ in her seat, giggling.
I couldnât help but laugh.
âHa, so cute.â
Smiling, I got up to order the extra cheese stick.
After all, today really was a good day.

Arme Entertainmentâ
a small agency among small agencies.
They still held weekly meetings, but honestly, there wasnât much to discuss.
The only active artist under their name was the girl group âRose Gold.â
Ten years since debut. No new fans. No invitations to perform.
Basically retired.
âMan, this is bad. I donât know how much longer we can keep the company running.â
The executive director shook his head.
The department heads around the table looked equally grim.
âYeah. Weâve been running losses every month. I donât know how long weâll last.â
âIs the CEO out playing golf again? Heâs unbelievable.
The companyâs dying, and heâs on the green.â
âWhat about Rose Gold? Itâs been ten years. Maybe itâs time to let them go.
No oneâs calling them for shows anyway.â
âWe canât even get new trainees. People online say,
âAvoid Arme Entertainment at all costs.ââ
No one had a solution.
The company was sinking, and the CEOâthe one with real powerâ
had long stopped caring.
âSigh⌠fine. Iâll tell the CEO about todayâs discussion,
but who knows if heâll even listen.â
The director clicked his tongue and added,
âAnyway, meetingâs over.
Letâs just go eat somethingâmaybe grilled intestines and soju?
I heard a new place opened nearby.â
A few managers agreed.
But just before everyone stood upâ
âExcuse me, sir.â
The voice came from Song Joon-shik.
âHmm? Mr. Song? What is it?â
âIf you have a moment, could I play a song for you?â
âA song? Right now?â
âYes, sir. I think something really good has come up.â
â…A song?â
The director frowned.
The others looked equally unimpressed.
What was the point of hearing a âgood songâ when they had no artist to sing it?
Still, Joon-shik was a veteran in the industryârespected, experienced, and senior to everyone in the room.
They couldnât just dismiss him outright.
âHaha, whatâs this, Mr. Song? Got inspired after a long time?
Havenât heard you play something for us in ages.â
The director smiled awkwardly and gestured for him to continue.
The others stayed seated out of politeness.
But Joon-shik shook his head.
âActually, itâs not my song.â
âWhat? Not yours?â
âNo. It was written by Composer Yoo Tae-oh.â
âOh, come onâŚâ
The director scowled, and the mood in the room instantly soured.
The department heads exchanged annoyed looks.
Everyone in the company knewâ
Yoo Tae-oh was the weakest composer they had.
Most thought he shouldâve been fired long ago.
âMr. Song, seriously? I thought it was your track.
Forget it. No need to waste time listening to Tae-ohâs stuff. Itâs bound to be bad.â
âNo, sir. This time is different. Please, just one listen.â
âYouâre being stubborn, Mr. Song.
I get that you want to help your junior, but letâs not waste everyoneâs time.â
The others nodded.
To them, âa song by Yoo Tae-ohâ meant one thing: garbage.
But Joon-shik didnât back down.
âI apologize for taking your time, but pleaseâjust once.
Iâm begging you to listen.â
He bowed deeply.
The director sighed, scratching his head.
Seeing a man with graying hair bow so earnestly made him feel guilty.
âFine. Alright, weâll listen.â
âThank you, sir. I really appreciate it.â
Joon-shik opened his laptop and double-clicked the file
Yoo Tae-oh had sent him earlier.
The music began to playâ
and the best song of Yoo Tae-ohâs life filled the room.
