Chapter 12
Eilaâs declaration of annulment was undeniably justifiedâso much so that no one could fault her logic.
âBecause of me, Roshia has lived deprived of everything until now. I wonât let her suffer further.â
A prideful, stubborn choiceâone only Eila would make. That very obstinance made it all the more infuriating.
âHer demeanor made it obvious: she still has feelings for me.â
Kadin had assumed sheâd remain within easy reach, but her defiance gnawed at him. Yet he clung to the belief sheâd relent.
âA woman raised as the Blanche Familyâs noble daughter could never adapt to commoner life.â
From her plummeting status to the scornful stares of former peersâevery facet of her existence would crumble. Unable to endure it, Eila would crawl back to him.
And as if summoned, a figure stepped into the garden.
âEila?â
But the sight of Freyaânot Eilaâtwisted Kadinâs expression.
âEila? Who the hell were you expecting?â
Freyaâs face contorted in irritation. âDonât tell me youâve been waiting for her all this time.â
Kadinâs reply was icy. âDonât be absurd.â
âYouâve no idea the humiliation I endured today because of you.â
Heâd already heard the rumorsâhow Freya had cornered Eila.
âShe claims Eila bullied her?â
The audacity of playing victim after instigating the conflict made Freyaâs presence unbearable. His voice sharpened.
âYou were Eilaâs closest friend. Yet youâre unfazed by her downfall?â
Freya smirked. âThat was when she was the Blanche heiress. Now? Sheâs beneath my notice.â
Kadin knew Freya had always seethed with envy toward Eila. Only their difference in rank had forced her to hide it.
âNow that Eilaâs a commoner, sheâs baring her fangs.â
Freyaâs whisper dripped venom. âA peasant daring to stand above meâdisgusting.â
Then, her tone shifted, saccharine. âSpeaking of, have you met Roshia? Such a docile girl. Perfect for an engagement.â
Kadin stiffened. The unspoken planâto replace Eila with Roshiaâwas inevitable.
âI knew this would happen. So why does it rankle?â
Since Eilaâs rejection, even Roshiaâs name soured his mood. Worse, he understood Freyaâs motive:
She coveted Darien Celestia, the crown prince. With few families eligible for imperial ties, sheâd eliminate rivalsâstarting with Eila.
âIf she weds the first prince, sheâll become empress.â
The second prince, Adolf, was a concubineâs sonâno match for Darienâs legitimacy. Even the late empressâs daughter, the reclusive princess, posed no threat.
Kadin scoffed. âHow generous of you to fret over my engagement. Feeling threatened?â
Freyaâs frown deepened. âThen cut ties with that commoner. What if Roshia doubts your loyalty?â
âCut ties?â
His laugh was razor-edged. âNot your concern.â
âKadinâwhat are you plotting?â
âKnow your place, Freya.â
He strode away. If Eila wouldnât come to him, heâd drag her back himself.
âShe couldnât have severed her feelings so easily.â
âWas the annulment just a ploy for my attention?â
If so, it worked.
Eila had become an obsession.
âPardonâhave you seen Eila?â
âK-Kadin? SheâsâŚâ
He intercepted magic department students until one pointed him to the infirmary.
âHiding there during lunch? Pathetic.â
He envisioned her in tears, abandoned by fair-weather friends. Freyaâs torment wouldâve already begun.
âSheâll learnâcommoners who anger nobles share Felixâs fate.â
That upstart swordsmanâs disgrace was a cautionary tale.
Yet when Kadin shoved the door open, sunlight framed Eila like a portraitâskin luminous, lips curved in a smile he hadnât seen in years.
âSince when was she this radiant?â
The Eila he remembered had been faded, perpetually anxious. Now, even as a commoner, she stood taller.
And the target of her smile?
Felix.
The lowborn knight Kadin despised.
White-hot fury surged.
Her words echoed:
âI know my place now. A commoner like me shouldnât stand with you.â
Was this what she meant? Discarding him for a peasant?
Their proximityâclose enough to brush armsâignited something primal.
âWere they always this familiar?â
Eila had been his constant. His certainty.
Now that certainty shattered.
âWhat,â Kadin bit out, âare you doing?â
Eila turned, startled. âKadin? Whyââ
He stepped closer, voice a blade. âAnswer me.â
Her gaze flicked between him and Felix. Thenâcalm.
âPerfect. I needed rumors about Felix anyway.â
