Chapter 41 â The Teacherâs New Home
âLiaaa!â
âAnnelia, you idiot!â
âUwaah, big sister!!â
I nearly jumped out of bed when a whole crowd of children burst into the room.
âLulu? Mika? TomâŚ?â
And even Karien, Marshall, Bruno, and Rob.
âWaitâwhy are all the kids from Evehill Orphanage here?â
While I was still staring at them in shock, Miel chuckled softly beside me and tucked a soft cushion behind my neck.
Owen still hadnât returned from gathering medicine ingredients, so the wounds on my back were healing slowly.
At least the pain had eased a lot thanks to the steady doses of painkillers.
The doctor had even marveled at how well the wound wasnât getting worse.
Of course, there was a reason for that.
âStill, Owen needs to come back soon.â
I had so much to tell himâ
like how the plants growing in the Abner greenhouse could heal this kind of injury in no time.
And how Iâd been secretly using them little by little to treat myself.
Just as I shifted my position carefully, the last person entered the room.
Miss Anne.
âYou little rascals! Didnât I tell you Liaâs still sick? What kind of children make this much noise when visiting someone whoâs hurt?â
The kids froze instantly.
âIn this room, no shouting. If you want to talk, raise your hand. One at a time.â
Immediately, Mika shot her hand up first.
âLia! Why are you hurt? Why do you have bandages on your legs?â
Mika was one of my friends from the orphanageâsame age as me.
All the other kids were staring, waiting for an answer.
I didnât even know where to start, so Miss Anne sighed and shrugged.
ââŚWe couldnât just leave the orphanage empty, so we all came together.â
So that meant everyone from the orphanage was staying in the Abner mansion right now?
My jaw dropped, and before I could say anything, Mika ran up to my bed, pressed her face into the blanket, and gave me a terrifying glare.
âI told you not to get sick! So why did you!?â
âUh, wellâŚâ
Then little Lulu, standing a bit behind her, plopped down on the floor with a wet thud.
âL-Liaâs hurt? Liaâs gonna die?â
âHic⌠L-Liaâs dying? WaaaahâŚâ
And just like that, the crying spread through the whole room like wildfire.
All the kids were sobbing, rolling around on the floor like it was the end of the world.
I guess seeing me wrapped in bandages like a mummy had been too much for them.
Miss Anne covered her forehead with one hand.
Miel and Soya looked at me nervously, clearly unsure what to do.
âAbsolute rest! No excitement!â
The doctorâs warnings echoed in my head.
âMiss, are you all right?â Soya asked gently. âShould we⌠send your friends back for now?â
But I shook my head with a mysterious smile.
âNo. Liaâs okay.â
Then, after taking a deep breath, I spoke softly to the crying children.
âI have sooo many toys.â
Mika stopped crying first.
âAnd I think thereâs still some chocolate cake left from the party.â
Tom and Lulu instantly quieted down too and looked up at me with round eyes.
Inside, I smirked in triumph.
Then I threw in the finishing line.
âIâll share the toys and cakeâbut only with the first people who stop crying.â
***
âHave you ever seen a five-year-old handle a group of kids like that?â
âNo⌠never.â
âNeither have I,â Miss Anne admitted with a sigh. âBut Liaâs always been a little different.â
I smiled proudly as the three women sitting around the table whispered to each other.
Meanwhile, my orphanage friends were all sitting on the big rug, completely absorbed in the mountain of toys.
âWhoa⌠look at this!â
Tom gasped. âItâs a Royal Knight Set!â
âWhere? Where!?â
Ah, the Royal Knight Set.
That was a gift from Lady Harper, the Empress Dowagerâs handmaid and Daisyâs mother.
âThereâs even a Fairy Princess doll here!â
Mika couldnât take her eyes off the doll the butler had given me.
âThis teddy bearâs huge⌠I love teddy bears more than anythingâŚâ
Lulu was rubbing her face against the giant bearâs belly, giggling.
They all looked like they were walking on clouds.
Thenâ
âLia! Are all these yours?â Tom asked, eyes shining.
I couldnât help puffing out my chest a little.
âYup, theyâre mine.â
âWow! Then did your mom give them to you?â
That question made me freeze.
The Fairy Princess doll slipped from Mikaâs hands as Lulu turned to me with wide eyes.
âWhoâs your mom, Lia? Yesterday we saw Chloe! She came back to visit the orphanageâwith her mom!â
Chloeâright. She was the girl whoâd been adopted when I was four.
âIs your mom nice too? Chloeâs mom is really nice! Sheâs tall and pretty andââ
Luluâs eyes sparkled as she spoke.
All the kids stared at me, waiting for my answer.
âU-um⌠IâŚâ
My voice shrank to a whisper.
âI donât⌠have a mom yet.â
Luluâs mouth dropped open.
Then Tom raised his hand like he was in class.
âThen you have a dad!â
I slowly shook my head again.
âNo⌠no dad either.â
The kids went quiet.
âHow do I even explain thisâŚ?â
They must have thought Iâd been adopted by a noble family.
They didnât understand what a sponsorship program was.
âI mean⌠I donât have parents, but I can live here,â I tried to explain.
âThe Duchess is a really kind personâshe even gives me gifts.â
âThen youâre waiting for your parents to come find you here?â Lulu asked.
âYeah! I thought you already had a mom and dad!â Tom added.
âUm⌠not exactly.â
Lulu tilted her head.
âStill, you get to eat chocolate cake every day, right?â
âUh-huh.â
For some reason, my shoulders sank, and I found myself looking down.
Thenâ
Ahem.
A low cough came from the doorway.
I turned my head and saw Duchess Sharon Abner, with Wendel standing behind her.
My face lit up.
âDuchess!â
The kids all stared at her curiously.
Lulu leaned toward Tom and whispered loudly enough for everyone to hear,
âWow, is that Liaâs family?â
âDummy! She said she doesnât have one yet!â
The room fell silent again.
I blinked rapidly, not knowing what to do.
Sharon Abner stepped forward, her heels clicking softly on the floor.
âHow are you feeling?â she asked, hesitating for a moment.
âIâm fine! The doctor said the wounds are clean now! Just my back still hurts a littleâŚâ
âI see. Youâre taking your medicine regularly?â
âYes!â
(Well, more like I canât skip it because it hurts too much.)
âGood.â
The Duchess smiled faintly, then slowly turned around.
âYou there.â
She was speakingâto Miss Anne.
âYes, Duchess?â
âI have something important to discuss with you.â
Miss Anne blinked in surprise.
Even I tilted my head.
âThe Duchess wants to talk alone with Miss Anne?â
Now that I thought about it, I still didnât know how Miss Anne and all the kids had ended up here, or why sheâd been injured.
So many questions.
Then I heard the Duchessâs low, steady voice.
âWould you consider working here, for House Abner?â
