Chapter 23 â A Deal Between the Child and the Tower Master
I frowned slightly, then shrugged.
âI dunno.â
Owenâs eyes widened.
âI really donât know,â I said honestly.
It was true. How could I possibly know what would happen if my secretâmy regressionâwas exposed?
Iâd already looked into it as much as I could.
Throughout all of recorded history, there wasnât a single other regressor.
Not one.
That meant I was the first and only case.
âSo⌠I guess the whole empireâno, the whole continentâwould explode with chaos, right?â
For a while, people would probably think the same thing Owen didâthat I was a dark magician.
Maybe even the Magic Tower or the Alchemy Academy would come after me, wanting to âstudyâ me.
Theyâd definitely want to use my body for experiments.
And honestly, Iâd be curious too if I were them.
I looked Owen straight in the eye.
âBut you wouldnât do that, would you, Teacher?â
ââŚâ
âTwenty billion tera.â
Owenâs pupils twitched.
âThink about it carefully. You only got that money because of me. You were about to tell Sharon Abner the truth earlier, werenât you?â
I crossed my arms and gave him a sly look.
âIf youâd said that, she wouldnât have given you even a single two-terra coin.â
Owen bit his lip.
âSharon Abner doesnât fall for emotional pleas. She values investments with logic and profit. Thatâs the kind of person she is.â
That was exactly why Iâd interrupted him back thenâbefore he ruined everything.
The moment he said the words âlend me moneyâ, Sharon wouldâve become wary of him.
Especially now, when she was already short on funds because of the mine shutdown.
âSheâs struggling for capital as it is. Would she welcome someone begging for money?â
I looked at him, my tone firm.
âTeacher, your brotherâs alive because of meâAnnelia.â
I made sure to say each word clearly, glaring just enough to make my point.
âAnd youâre going to repay me by exposing my secret?â
Silence fell between us.
Finally, Owen let out a long sigh.
âFine, fine! I wasnât planning on saying anything anyway, you little bean!â
Then he ruffled his own hair in frustration.
ââŚI just had to make sure. You really freaked me out for a second. I thought you might actually be a dark magician.â
âWhat?!â I stared at him in disbelief.
Owenâs voice sounded half-annoyed, half-exasperated.
âYou think Iâm stupid? Who knows what youâre capable of? You could curse me in my sleep for all I know.â
ââŚâ
âMy future, my brotherâs futureâand that formula I worked my whole life to perfectâ
you looked at it once and understood all of it.â
He rubbed his arm like heâd gotten goosebumps.
âI donât want more trouble. Iâve got enough to deal with already. So letâs just⌠keep things simple, alright?â
Then he reached out and pushed down lightly on the top of my head.
âFine, Iâll do things your way. Just stop giving me that scary look. And donât worryâIâll pay you back properly.â
ââŚâ
âSo tell me,â he said, sighing, âwhat is it you actually want?â

Later That Night
âHeheheâŚâ
I hid under my blanket, trying not to giggle out loud.
In my hands was a little notebook filled with messy handwriting.
It listed the names of people I could truly trust inside House Abner.
Miel, Soya, Aunt Mareness, the head chefâŚ
And finallyâ
Owen.
âWendel and the old butler still need to be tested a bit longerâŚâ
I tucked the notebook under my pillow and peeked out from under the blanket.
The ceiling was dotted with the glowing star decorations Miel had spent all afternoon hanging for me.
âGood thing I told Owen the truth.â
It had been a bold move, sureâbut not a careless one.
Iâd made the decision because of what I remembered from my past life.
Q: Whatâs the first thing you did after becoming Tower Master?
A: I wanted to make sure no other children died as easily as my brother did. So I donated the rights to my potion formula to a child relief foundation.
Q: I heard youâre selling the potion cheaply so even commoners can afford itâis that true?
A: Yes. I donât care about profits. I just donât want to watch kids die anymore.
***
Owen Dennis had been a man who loved his brother dearly.
Heâd seen his brotherâs face in every sick child he met afterward.
Heâd given up his lifeâs work for charity just so no one else would suffer the same way.
That kind of person wouldnât betray me.
And I was right.
ââŚThank you.â
He hadnât just kept my secretâheâd even thanked me for helping him save Arwin.
That had caught me completely off guard.
No one had ever thanked me like that before.
âWhatever. He should be thanking me! I did help him save his brother.â
I turned over in bed and stared at the faint tree-shaped shadows dancing across the curtain.
âThe important part is that I now have someone who can finish the purification solution for me.â
Since I couldnât complete it myself in this childâs body, I could now do it through Owenâusing his name.
Of course, heâd insisted on putting my name as a co-developer.
No matter how many times I told him it would look weird, he refused to back down.
***
âCome on, you said in your last life everyone stole your work, right? If I publish this under my name alone, Iâm just doing the same thing to you.â
âItâs different! Back then I was forced! This time, Iâm choosing toââ
âNope. Unless your nameâs on the paper too, Iâm not doing it.â
âThatâs not fair! You said youâd do what I wanted! You liar!â
âToo bad. This is the exception. Find another way if you donât like it.â
***
He really was as stubborn as his title suggestedâthe youngest Tower Master in history.
Just thinking about it made me sigh again.
âMaybe I picked the wrong partner. Heâs supposed to be helping me, not arguing with me.â
I groaned into my pillow.
âForget it. Iâll just say I gave him the idea, and he finished it himself. Simple.â
But deep down, I knew heâd never let me do that either.
After all, Owen was the kind of man who treated ethics like an unbreakable contract.
âUgh. Did I choose too good a person?â
Eventually, I sighed again and pulled the blanket tighter around me.
âWhatever. I should just sleep.â
The faster I fell asleep, the faster tomorrow would come.
And I had something important to look forward toâ
Because in a few days, a special guest was coming to visit the Abner estate.
And to me, that guest was quite significant.
âNice to meet you.â
I blinked in surprise at the boy smiling warmly at me.
âMy nameâs Arwin.â
âUhâŚâ
The guest Iâd been waiting forâOwenâs younger brother, Arwin Dennisâhad finally arrived.
And he was beautiful.
He had a pale, delicate face and soft light-brown hair.
His eyes, a bright spring-green, sparkled like new leaves.
âMy brother told me about you,â he said, stepping forward. âHe said you saved my life.â
Before I could stop him, Arwin reached out and held my hands.
âThank you, Annelia.â
Looking into his big, clear green eyes, I could only nod dumbly.
But deep inside, I couldnât help thinkingâ
Heâs too kind-looking.
After arguing with Owen for days, Iâd realized something important.
He didnât exactly⌠cooperate the way I wanted.
âWhat do you mean âresearchâ? Youâre a kid. Go to bed.â
âBut Teacher! You know how urgent this is! We donât have timeââ
âEight oâclock bedtime. End of discussion.â
And that wasnât even the worst of it.
âJust one sip!â
âOf what? Coffee?â
âI havenât had a drop since I got here! You know my secretâyou can at least give me a little!â
âNo.â
He was impossibly strict.
And when it came to workâ
âWhy is my name on this draft?!â
âI told you, Iâm not publishing it under my name alone. You helped too.â
âBut we agreed Iâd stay anonymous!â
âWhen did I say that? Besides, youâve already been bragging everywhere that youâre a genius. Donât be so dramatic. Youâre not that special. Lose the ego.â
Owen Dennis was the exact opposite of a helpful assistant.
If anything, he was an obstacleâan antagonist to my plans.
Which was why Iâd decided on a new strategy:
Use Arwin.
If I could win over the younger brother, maybe I could keep the older one in line.
ButâŚ
Looking at Arwinâs pure, angelic smile made that plan fall apart immediately.
âHow am I supposed to manipulate someone who looks like this?!â
He looked like a springtime angel straight out of a storybook.
Then, in that soft, gentle voice, he askedâ
âI hope we can be friends from now on, Annelia. Is that okay?â
I hesitated for a momentâthen smiled weakly.
âY-yeah⌠okayâŚâ
