hapter 10 â The Princeâs Wounds and the Snake in Silk
They said he was violent. That he killed people like swatting ants. That he was obsessed with women.
I sighed quietly and looked at Tianâs face, which was red as a beet.
âHurry up. Or at least unbutton a few buttons so I can check if youâre hurt.â
I just wanted to make sure he didnât have any bruises.
I doubted anyone would dare to actually hit the Crown Prince⌠but after what Iâd just seen, I wasnât so sure anymore.
Tian stammered, his face burning.
âI-Iâm fine! He just pulled me a little, thatâs all! Iâm not weak enough to get hurt from that!â
I frowned.
âJust pulled you a littleâ?
That wasnât something you could say about a prince.
Even a light shove against royalty could get someone executed.
Still, I didnât push further and simply studied him closely.
No visible bruises on his face.
No marks on his neck either.
But that didnât mean there werenât injuries hidden elsewhere.
Heâs only eight, and already so embarrassed. I canât exactly strip him down to check, can I?
As I debated what to do, I felt his sharp gaze.
Tian was glaring at me with his small fists clenched.
âDonât you dare pity me,â he said coldly.
Then he snatched the white cloth from my hand and threw it to the floor.
âYou donât need to do useless things like that.â
I blinked.
âEh? I wasnât pitying you. I was angry.â
His mouth shut in confusion.
âYou gave me jerky earlier, remember? So I just got angry on your behalf.â
âY-you call that getting angry? Then whyâd you wipe my face?â
âI told you already! You were sweating, so I didnât want you catching a cold.â
âYou donât get colds from a little sweat!â
âYou do! Iâm from an orphanage, you know. The kids there get sick all the time after sweating in the cold.â
He puffed up, but didnât argue further.
Sensing my victory, I kept going.
âAnd why are you mad at me anyway? The mean one was that old man.â
That caught him off guard.
âWhat?â
âIf I were you, Iâd have gotten even. Youâve got the power to fight back.â
I stepped closer, looking up seriously.
âSpeaking of which⌠I donât know all the details, butââ
ââŚâ
âWhy are people treating you like this, Your Highness? You donât deserve it. Youâre strong and smartâlike, really strong for your age.â
I couldnât help remembering.
Iâd been happy until I was twelveâ
at the orphanage, with Miss Anneâs care, and even later, when I was adopted by the Longton family.
At least, until Hiana came.
But this boy⌠heâs the Crown Prince.
And yet, he was being treated worse than I ever had.
Worse still, I knew how his story ended.
In my previous life, heâd been stripped of his title, exiled from the palace,
and a few months later⌠found dead.
So how could I not care?
My voice rose before I realized.
âAnd another thingâwho worries about the person who insulted them?
You got mad when I called you a âformer prince,â but then you scolded me for saying dangerous things.
What kind of royal does that?â
Then I hesitated and added sheepishly, âBut, um⌠since Iâm just a kid, maybe let it slide this once.â
Tian let out a long sigh that sounded somewhere between disbelief and exhaustion.
As I turned my gaze elsewhere, something clicked in my head.
***
âBut isnât there still the Dowager Empress? I heard she supported him to the end.â
âHer support wonât help. Sheâs just an old woman tucked away in her chambers.â
My eyes widened.
Rightâthe Dowager Empress.
In my previous life, she had been the only one who stood by Tian after he was deposed.
She even mourned longer than anyone else after the Empressâs death.
âHave you ever told your grandmother? I meanâthe Dowager Empress.
About that servant hurting you?â
Tian frowned.
âWhat?â
âI mean, did you tell her heâs been mistreating you?â
He hesitated, then shook his head, looking almost sulky.
âNo. I barely even see her.â
âWhy? Sheâs your grandmother.â
His face darkened, and I nodded to myself.
So thatâs how it is.
Even with only fragments of knowledge, I could piece it together easily.
âBetter this way. Now we can side with Queen Karin and her new prince.â
After Tian was deposed, it was Queen Karinâs sonâthe Second Princeâwho replaced him.
The rumors about Tian being violent were lies.
Everything had been staged.
And the only person who truly gained from it all was Queen Karin herselfâ
the woman who wanted her own child on the throne.
âI donât get it,â I said aloud, pretending to puzzle over it.
âWhy would it be so hard for you to see your grandmother?â
His face turned complicated.
Of course, I already knew the answer.
Because Queen Karin made sure of it.
She must have isolated himâcut off all his connections, especially with the Dowager Empressâ
so she could control everything around him.
Maybe it was the jerky giving me energy, but my brain was running fast now.
Without hesitation, I grabbed Tianâs hand.
âListen, Your Highness. If that old man bothers you againâŚâ
I leaned up on my toes, bringing my mouth close to his ear, and whispered,
âDo this. Promise me, okay?â
When I stepped back, his face was red again from ear to ear.
He stumbled backward, flustered.
For a second, I wondered if Iâd gone too farâ
Did I just overstep with the prince?
Then I shrugged inwardly.
Eh. Heâs got at least ten years before he grows into a proper adult. Heâll live.
* * *
âWhat do you mean you couldnât find Tian?â
Queen Karinâs voice was sharp enough to cut glass.
Jacques bowed so low his nose nearly touched the carpet.
âM-my apologies, Your Majesty. He was nowhere to be found in the mansion.â
A bald-faced lie.
Heâd just seen the boyâin fact, heâd run straight from the east wing after meeting that girl.
That silver-haired little brat who had dared to talk back to him.
He prided himself on knowing every noble lady in the Empireâ
yet he had never seen a child like her before.
Karin sighed, pressing a hand to her temple.
âI suppose heâs no longer just a child.
Still⌠when will he ever learn to be worthy of the throne?â
Across from her, Sharon Abner smiled faintly.
âHis Highness gives you much trouble, I hear.â
Karin returned the smile with perfect composure.
âYou know how I feel about him, Countess. I think of Tian as my own son.
It pains me to see him stray so far.â
âI can imagine,â Sharon replied smoothly.
Between them lay a thick stack of documents â
a five-year supply contract between the Imperial Palace and the Abner familyâs weapons division.
âIn any case,â said Karin, âI trust the Abner House will continue to deliver.
If you perform as you have so far, Iâll be more than satisfied.â
âYou flatter me, Your Majesty.â
Just then, the door opened.
To both womenâs surprise, Tian entered.
âIâm sorry,â he said, lowering his head. âI got lost⌠in the east garden.â
Karinâs brow twitched.
Idiot.
So she scolded him a little, and he ran away terrifiedâ
only to get lost and embarrass her in front of a duchess.
Annoyance flared, but she didnât show it.
Not with so many eyes watching.
Her gaze drifted to Sharon Abner.
The current head of House Abnerâ
a woman whose name carried both respect and irritation for the Queen.
When will this old wolf finally bow her head?
Theyâd been rivals for yearsâmatching wits in every negotiation.
Sharon was fearless, smooth-tongued, and never allowed the palace to have the upper hand.
Yet Karin had always let her win just enough.
Abnerâs influence still needs to grow, she thought. Then Iâll crush her properly.
Rising from her seat, she turned to Tian.
âWeâll discuss this further once weâre back at the palace. Prepare to leave.â
ââŚYes, Your Majesty.â
Her maids hurried to help her into her fur-lined coat and fix her gown.
She inclined her head politely to Sharon.
âIâll be taking my leave. Perhaps weâll meet again at His Majestyâs birthday celebration this autumn.â
âMost likely,â Sharon replied with a calm smile.
Karin turned toward the door, where Jacques stood waiting.
âIâll ride separately from the Crown Prince,â she murmured coldly.
âI canât stand to breathe the same air.â
Her heels clicked against the thick brown carpet as she left.
She never noticed the way Tianâs eyes followed herâ
or how, for once, that gaze held something different.
Something sharper.
Something that didnât tremble anymore.
