âVillainess Goes Out to Eatâ
âŚIt was night.
I was the one who woke up first, so I gently shook Yuaâs small shoulder.
âYua, itâs time to wake up.â
âMmyaa⌠nnnhâŚâ
A soft, almost kitten-like sound slipped from her slightly trembling lips.
âFufuâŚâ A smile escaped me before I could stop it.
I shook her shoulder againâthis time a little firmer.
Her eyelids slowly fluttered open.
âLady Vina⌠good morningâŚâ
She rubbed her eyes with both hands, utterly unguardedâlike a childâand let out a long stretch. Her beautiful silver hair spilled down her shoulders in a smooth cascade.
âItâs not exactly morning anymore. Itâs already eight in the evening.â
âEhh⌠whaâ!? I-Iâm sorry! Iâll prepare dinner right awayââ
I raised a hand to stop her.
âItâs fine. Letâs eat out today.â
ââŚRight.â
Yua stood up, and I followed.
âIs that place from last time okay?â
âYes.â
âThe last placeâ referred to the dining area inside the monster subjugation request office. The place we had visited on our first day in this city.
After receiving her answer, I went to the dressing table and fixed my appearance. In the mirror, I gathered my slightly bluish black hair into a single tie at the back, then turned to Yua.
I ran a comb through her silken silver hair, letting it flow smoothly between my fingers.
âWhat hairstyle do you want today?â
âWhatever Lady Vina prefersâŚâ
âI see. Understood.â
Just like I used to do for my younger sister, I began weaving Yuaâs hair into a single braid.
âFufu⌠there. Done.â
ââŚLady Vina. This is the same hairstyle as Renaâs, isnât it?â
Yua pouted slightly.
âSo this means⌠Lady Vina, youâre actually a sisconâŚ?â
âThatâs not it at all. I donât dislike it, but thatâs all.â
I denied it and lightly patted her head.
âNow then, letâs go.â
ââŚYes.â
Still a little reluctant, Yua nodded.
We stepped outside together.
A cold wind brushed across my skin, sharp and biting. This town was surrounded by mountains, so even in summer, the nights were cold. That was also why it was often used as a resort.
âTch⌠nights really are cold. Maybe I shouldâve grabbed a coat.â
âIâm fine like this.â
Yua said thatâand then suddenly latched onto my arm.
âYua, thatâs improper behavior.â
âWeâre both girls, so itâs fine.â
Thatâs not the pointâŚ
But I let it go.
I allowed her to cling to me as we walked into the old building we were heading for. This was the Monster Subjugation Request Office.
As the name suggested, it was a place where people accepted requests to eliminate monsters that threatened public safety. Anyone with skill could register regardless of status, so I had registered a week ago. Since then, we had been earning our living through requests.
When I first arrived, they were suspicious of meâunderstandably, since I was just a young girl claiming she could fight monsters. But the moment I revealed my magic power, I surpassed everyone there⌠and quickly rose to the top of the rankings.
Thanks to that, we had no trouble making a living.
âExcuse me.â
I gave a small bow and entered.
Inside, the building was divided into three sections: the reception desk, the request board, and the dining area.
We headed straight for the dining space.
âYo, girls!â
A burly man called out loudly, clearly tipsy.
âYou took that boar monster request, right? Howâd it go? That thingâs fast and nastyâI can give you a hand if you need!â
We had never spoken before. He was a stranger, and yet acted like we were old friends.
Probably drunk.
âItâs already finished. Iâll submit the report later.â
âOhhh, is that so? As expected of our princess.â
Yuaâs shoulders jolted.
Her grip on my arm tightened.
That wordâprincessâmust have triggered something in her.
ââŚItâs fine. They donât know your identity.â
I whispered into her ear.
She relaxed slightly.
Then someone else called out.
âMan, you two really are close. I wish I had a brother like that.â
Another stranger.
âRight? And theyâre both cute too.â
âYeah, yeah. Hey, how about drinking with us?â
âNice idea. I wanna drink with Vina-chan too.â
âI wanna talk girl stuff with Yua-chan!â
âOi, old lady, youâre way past âgirlâ age.â
âWhat was that? Iâll kill you, you brat.â
The chatter escalated instantly.
These drunkardsâŚ
It was exhausting to deal with them.
So I ignored them and led Yua to an empty two-person table.
Even after being ignored, they kept going cheerfully.
âAhh, we got rejected.â
âServes you right, with that scary face of yours.â
âWhat did you say?â
âHahaha, nice, nice!â
âSee? I told you not to call her old lady again.â
âS-sorryâŚâ
It was noisy.
Too noisy.
And yet⌠strangely, the unpleasant racket felt a little comforting to me.
âExcuse me. May I place an order?â
âYes! Be right there!â
I called a staff member over and, once she arrived, placed our order.
âIâll have the pan-fried âHundred-Leg Spiderâ, the beef-bird carpaccio, and two drink bars.â
âEh⌠th-the hundred-leg spiderâŚ?â
The waitress stared at me like she couldnât believe what she just heard.
ââŚIs there a problem?â
I looked back at her.
She flinchedâas if she thought I was pressuring her.
âI-Iâm sorry! Y-yes! One hundred-leg spider pan-fry, beef-bird carpaccio, and two drink barsâcorrect?â
âYes. Thank you.â
âR-right away!â
She hurried off toward the kitchen.
Watching her go, Yua gave a small, wry smile.
âLady Vina⌠you really do like strange foods, donât you?â
âI donât particularly like them.â
Yua tilted her head.
âThen why? Every time we eat out, you always order things like that.â
âJust curiosity. I simply wonder what they taste like.â
âAh⌠I see. I kind of understand that! Unknown things are tempting.â
âIndeed.â
I nodded.
âOh, right. Do you want to try some of mine too?â
I offered her the hundred-leg spider dish.
With a bright, radiant smile, she replied immediately:
âNo thank you.â
âŚRejected.
Pity.
