Chapter 2 ā The Saint of Rare Blood
āFrom today onward, you are my wife. Fieneāthe Saint of Rare Blood.ā
āRārare⦠whatā¦?ā
Those sapphire-blue eyes fixed on her without the slightest intention of letting her escape.
āYour blood is something called rare blood. Itās very⦠alluring. It has a sweet, fragrant scent.ā
āN-no one has ever told me something like thatā¦ā
āOf course not. Itās only āalluringā⦠to vampires.ā
āV-vampiresā¦!?ā
The carriage began to move slowly, the wheels jolting as it rolled forward.
With the sudden sway, Fiene lost her balance and stumbled forwardāfalling straight into Oswaldās chest.
āI-Iām terribly sorry! The Ertze carrā!ā
Her words broke off halfway.
Because she finally noticed.
(ā¦His canines are long⦠like fangs. And his eyes⦠theyāre redā¦)
Oswald gently closed his eyes.
When he opened them again, they had returned to their usual sapphire blue, and he offered her a soft, reassuring smile.
āHave you realized it now? Yes. I am a vampire.ā
ā…A vampireā¦ā
Vampires were nothing more than beings from legends and picture books.
For one to appear before her like thisāshe couldnāt hide her shock.
āYour blood is rare, you see. To a vampire⦠itās a delicacy.ā
At those words, Fiene held her breath.
A cold tension ran through her body, as if the man in front of her might take her life at any moment.
(I see⦠so I was bought⦠to be eaten by him.)
Imagining what awaited her, her expression slowly went hollow.
(Itās not like I havenāt suffered before⦠or been failed by every previous arrangement.)
She closed her eyes.
Starved and mistreated, she had grown thin and frailādisappointing nobles who had only taken interest in her body.
Another had rejected her outright, calling her emerald eyes ādisgusting,ā leaving her outside in the freezing snow.
Once, in another household, she had been unable to prepare a meal properlyāand had boiling soup thrown on her, leaving burns on her skin.
Voices echoed in her mind like a curse from those daysā
āShut up and do as I say!ā
āDo you really think Iād be satisfied with a body like that?!ā
āWhatās with those eyes? Disgusting!ā
āDonāt come any closer, you fake saint!ā
Fiene slowly opened her eyes again and looked up at Oswald.
Then she gave a faint, almost self-deprecating smile.
(I suppose⦠being eaten by a vampire might be the most fitting end for me.)
As if she had accepted somethingāher death, or perhaps something beyond itāshe smiled.
Oswaldās expression turned serious.
āDo you⦠think Iām going to eat you?ā
āā¦Huh?ā
She blinked, confused.
He gently placed a hand against her cheek, guiding her face up toward his.
And then he looked at her with an unusually tender gaze.
āI wonāt do that.ā
Softly, he brushed her hair aside.
āI wonāt eat you. So⦠you can relax.ā
He leaned in and placed a light kiss against her.
The touch was briefāalmost careful.
āIām not going to eat you. I promise.ā
His low, sweet voice warmed something inside her, and Fieneās body temperature rose just slightly.
Thank you very much for reading.
Iād be happy if you enjoyed it!
[Authorās Note]
Personally, I think I prefer calling them āvampires.ā
What about you all? āKyÅ«ketsuki,ā āvampire,ā or maybe ābanpaiaāāwhich do you like best?
Just a thought from me.
