Chapter 54
It felt like someone was rummaging through my mindâutterly confusing.
I was frozen in place, unable to utter a single word.
“Young Lady?”
If it had been a completely different name, I wouldnât have been so shaken.
But Renataâthat was a name I knew.
A name I knew all too well.
âThat canât be right.â
âYoung Lady?â
âEcla⌠the person you’re talking aboutâis it really the same person Iâm thinking of?â
âYou mean the daughter of Count Almaz?â
âYes, thatâs right.â
âBlonde hair, violet eyes, kind-hearted, and your childhood friendâthat lady?â
âYes, exactly! Thatâs her! But then why are you calling her Renata?â
âOh dear, what are we going to do with our poor Young LadyâŚâ
Ecla looked at me with pity in her eyes and grabbed my hand.
âOf course sheâs called Lady Renata. What else would I call her? Do you not remember her name?â
âNo, Ecla. Sheâs not Renata. Iâm telling you, sheâs not.â
I was incredibly confused.
Why had Leoni become Renata?
âEcla, who⌠who are you?â
I stepped back a couple of paces and faced her.
ââŚExcuse me?â
âAnd me? Am I really Liberata?â
âYoung LadyâŚâ
Ecla looked like she was about to cry.
But no matter what she was feeling, it couldnât be more overwhelming than the confusion I felt.
âYoung Lady, why are you saying thisâŚâ
âEcla, please, just tell me. Who are you?â
She let out a long sigh and then replied.
âEcla Luz.â
âOkay, so youâre still Ecla. Then what about me?â
I touched my face and ran my fingers through my hair as I asked.
âYoung Lady.â
âWho am I?â
The date wasnât what I remembered. My friendâs name had changed.
There was no guarantee that I myself had remained unchanged either.
Was I really still Liberata?
âOf course youâre still you, Young Lady. The daughter of Marquis Bernadette.â
âSo Iâm still the same, for now.â
Should I be grateful for that?
A chilling thought crept upâbut I forced myself to push it away.
No. Thatâs ridiculous.
Something like that couldnât possibly happen, not just like that, out of nowhere.
Even as my heart pounded like Iâd been running, I tried to calm myself.
Stay calm. First, calm down.
And⌠letâs hold off on that possibility for now.
Itâs not like I can confirm anything right away.
First, I need to find out what happened to Leoni.
âAnyway, the important thing is, I need to meet with Leoniâno, Renataâright now.â
âYou want to meet Lady Renata now?â
âI didnât realize so much time had passed. I told Leoni Iâd be out for just a moment and asked her to lie down for a bit in my place. But now itâs gotten so late. What do I do? SheâRenataâmust be furious.â
I had no idea what was going on.
Why were they calling Leoni âRenataâ? What was happening?
So I poured everything out to Eclaâjust blurted it all out without filter.
She simply stared at me for a long while in silence.
âEcla, I think we need to stop by the Count Almaz estate on the way home to apologize.â
Of course sheâd be mad.
She mustâve been anxiously trembling in my absence.
Sheâs such a fragile, sensitive girlâprobably hiding in that room alone, worrying every time footsteps approached.
Even though it was late, I had to go and apologize.
âLetâs just stop by for a moment. Actually, on the way, letâs drop by Weiss and pick up something my friend likesââ
âYoung Lady, Young Lady. Please wait a moment.â
Ecla carefully took my hand.
âYoung Lady.â
Her expression as she looked at me wasnât normal.
Her brows were knit tightly, her eyes coldâjust seeing her face made me gulp.
âYouâre not on those kinds of terms with Lady Almaz.â
âWhat do you mean ânot on those termsâ? What are you saying?â
I understood she might be angryâbut what did she mean we werenât close?
Was she trying to pretend she didnât know me now? Even changing her name?
If that was the case, just say so!
Fine, maybe I went a bit far. But I never expected it to take this long.
Still, if itâs Leoniâif I explain the situationâwouldnât she understand?
âEcla, even if sheâs angry, I need to explain. I have to apologize. I canât just let it go.â
âYoung Lady, please. Get a hold of yourself.â
Ecla glanced at the people passing by and lowered her voice drastically.
âPlease, letâs just go home for now. Not here.â
ââŚâ
âCome on.â
ââŚOkay.â
Letting Ecla pull me along, I climbed into the carriage like a crumpled rag.
What on earth is happening?
â â â
Even after returning home, I still felt out of it.
The atmosphere in the house⌠the behavior of the servants⌠everything was subtly strange.
It was definitely my home, yet it didnât feel like mine.
It is my houseâbut it also feels like it isnât. What is going on?
Even when I went up to my room, the feeling of unfamiliarity remained.
As I began to change clothes with Eclaâs help, I suddenly realizedâthe dress I was wearing was Leoniâs.
âEcla!â
âYes, Young Lady?â
âThis dressâitâs Leoniâs. Itâs hers!â
But once again, Ecla only looked at me with a deeply worried expression.
âYoung Lady, not this again. I told youâI donât know anyone named Leoni.â
âFine, then Renata. This is Renataâs dress!â
âOh dear. You need to get changed and have a nice bath. You really need some rest.â
âEcla, you know this isnât my dress. I donât wear this color!â
I shook the skirt hem to emphasize it, but Ecla just looked unsure.
âTake a closer look.â
âIâm sorry, Young Lady. I donât know.â
âRenata wore my chemise, and I wore her dress. This is it!â
ââŚâ
âThereâs the proof right here. Iâm not imagining things. I was really at Cygnus Castle, and Leoni and I swappedââ
âYoung Lady, please calm down.â
Ecla slumped her shoulders and sighed.
âIâll call the doctor again tomorrow. I think you really need more rest.â
âEcla.â
I grabbed her arm just as she was about to leave my room.
âYes, Young Lady?â
Right. Clearly something had happened to meâŚ
And Ecla seemed to think Iâd lost some of my memory from the trauma.
But what I described as being kidnapped didnât seem to match her idea of events.
So first, I had to figure out exactly what had happened to me.
âIâm really sorry, Ecla.â
âNo need to apologize, Young Lady.â
âI am sorry, deeply sorry. But it seems like my memory is hazy after I was abducted. So⌠I need to ask you a few things.â
âOf course, Young Lady. Ask me anything. Iâll explain everything.â
âOkay. Thank you.â
Letâs start by confirming the date.
âYou said today is the 17th?â
âYes.â
The 17th.
That means Iâve passed the 13th, and I havenât vanished or been erased.
âAnd⌠can you tell me why Renata and I are supposedly not on good terms?â
Ecla walked toward me cautiously.
And then, she gave me another one of those pitying looks.
âYoung Lady, before I say anything, please knowâno matter what awful thing you might have done, Iâll always be on your side.â
Why was she setting me up for something so terrifying?
Was it because Iâd put Leoni in an uncomfortable situation?
Yeah⌠I wouldnât be able to defend that, no matter how hard I tried.
âDonât scare me like that.â
âAnd even though I care for you deeply, Young Lady⌠this time⌠just a littleâŚâ
Ecla shrugged and trailed off again.
âA little? What do you mean, âjust a littleâ this time?â
âYou⌠were a little in the wrong.â
That didnât sound like it was about leaving Leoni at Cygnus Castle.
This felt much more serious.
What did I do to her?
âJust tell me already. Iâm dying of frustration.â
âYou stole Lady Renataâs fiancĂŠ.â
âWhat? I did?â
I was so shocked I jumped up.
âI did? I stole Leoniâno, Renataâs fiancĂŠ?â
âYes.â
Ecla nodded, her face somber.
At that point, though I had already begun to suspect the truth, I could no longer avoid it.
âOh⌠my god. Waitâwhoâs her fiancĂŠ?â
âWho else? His Grace, the Grand Duke of Cygnus.â
