Chapter 90
As soon as Flint ordered Prince Pablesica to come north, the Cyclamen couple hurried back to their region. Meanwhile, Eliano headed to the greenhouse in Howard Manor’s garden.
Inside the greenhouse stood several healthy peach trees, warmed by magical temperature control. It was said the peaches had ripened just in timeāEliano had come to admire them.
Stepping into the greenhouse, she froze. The golden-haired figure standing by the tree triggered a memory so vivid she turned pale and whispered, āHe came all this wayā¦ā She stumbled backward and collapsed.
Jane rushed up, alarmed: āYour Grace! Are you alright? Shall I fetch the physician?ā The golden-haired man turned, chewing a peach, then hurried over to Eliano. Fear and surprise mirrored on his face.
Eliano lowered her head in trembling silence.
āWhatās happening⦠Is the Duchess too ill?ā
That voice snapped her back to reality. Sheād mistaken him for someone else. The memory of abduction was still raw.
She exhaled and spoke weakly: āJane, please help me up.ā Jane lifted her gently. Seeing that the man wasnāt the threat she feared, Eliano regained composure and bowed with respect:
āGrand Duchess of Howard greets the Crown Prince.ā
Heriath shook his head gently.
āNo formalities, please. The Duchess is my only friend nowāno need for stiffness.ā
She replied, āAs the wife of my husbandās commander and as one of the future Sunās kin, I must observe proper courtesy.ā Her tone politeābut firm. Heriath narrowed his eyes. The unseen wall between them remainedābut he was capable of breaking it.
āWe were casual friends in childhood, Ria.ā
Hearing her childhood nickname made her smile faintly.
āI appreciate that the Little Sun still remembers childhood things.ā
He noticed her pink hair.
āItās still a beautiful color.ā
She looked surprised.
āYou remember that childhood time when I removed the earring to show you my true hair color? Damian nearly caused a scandalā¦ā
Back then, sheād secretly shown Heriath her natural pink hair. Heād said it was the most beautiful color he had ever seen. Since then he always thought of her as pale rose quartzāthough sheād pushed him away, feeling she didnāt deserve that delicate comparison.
Now he asked quietly:
āHow did you come so deep into Howard Manor?ā
Eliano regarded him coolly. She knew he had entered the manor discreetly through a secret passage. He chuckled:
āI came secretly. No one knew.ā He winked. Eliano considered sealing off the passageāFlint already knew exactly where it was.
āThe passage is for emergencies onlyā¦ā she muttered. He laughed softly:
āI only know oneābehind this greenhouse. Flitter knows too.ā
Flitter? It was Johnās nickname for him onceāa soft childish name that didnāt seem to fit the duke. She widened her eyes.
āI couldnāt forget the taste of these peaches.ā He handed one to Eliano, rosy and ripe.
She tasted it carefully. It was sweetābut surprisingly mild. He asked:
āWell? Very sweet, isnāt it?ā
āYes⦠sweet.ā She passed the rest to Jane.
Jane asked if more peaches should be picked. Eliano said:
āWaitāgive it more time. Just two for now.ā The guidance conflicted with Heriathās gentle urging to pick more. Jane hesitated, then picked a few under Elianoās approval. The prince pointed out which were riperālight banter.
As they walked back toward the house, Heriath kept chatting in his natural, winding way. He offered his arm when Eliano allowed it.
Though he now treated her warmlyāinquiring about coastal seafood, trade between Cyclamen and ZacadorāEliano stayed mostly silent.
She glanced at him and asked sharply:
āIf you have something to say, say it, Crown Prince.ā
He laughed, then turned serious:
āI feel deeply sorry for what happened to your sister.ā
Elianoās expression darkened.
āI hope itās not improper to say this to a bride before her wedding, butā¦ā
She waited. He sighed.
āEven you should know⦠family matters weigh on more than ceremony.ā
His sadness was sincere. Eliano looked out as they entered the houseāhis words drifting in the warm light of early afternoon.
