 Expectation

He laughed hoarsely, a low and charming sound in the night.

To keep the person on his back from feeling the bumps, he slowed his steps.

The rooftop was wide and silent.

The moon above looked close, as if it could be touched.

陸離 smiled while looking at the sleeping person in his arms.

He playfully pinched her nose.

Five seconds… ten… fifteen…

In her sleep, 慕晚晚 dreamed she was drowning and couldn’t breathe.

The dream felt real.

Streetlights below were tiny and weak, and people walking looked like ants.

He jumped down from the railing.

“Are you awake?”

“Don’t move, or you might fall.” He held her hand, smiling.

Realizing it was a prank, she slapped his hand away.

When she turned to look, she froze.

“If you want to come down, there is a condition.”

“Call me the way you used to. I will carry you down.”

He stared at her with rare expectation.

She looked up at the sky, feeling uneasy.

He pressed her swinging legs.

“Don’t worry. If you fall, I will cushion you.”

She had slept so deeply—if he had tricked her, she might not have noticed.

Her feet touched the ground. She watched him with concern.

It really was a rooftop.

“Jumping from so high, aren’t you afraid?” he asked.

She became angry and pinched his arm.

“This isn’t high? If I fell, I’d be gone.”

“When did that happen?” she asked, confused.

Her anger faded, replaced by surprise.

Coming to the rooftop and sitting at the edge—maybe he had drunk too much.

“I want to go down.”

He went down first, leaving her alone. She felt afraid and cold.

“What place is this?”

She glared at him.

“Why bring me up here?”

He still gave conditions.

“That’s enough,” she said.

“It’s dangerous,” she added while sitting up.

He smiled slightly.

“Back in school, you liked doing this.”

She copied him, but his hand held her waist.

“I asked you,” he said.

“Silence was agreement.”

The atmosphere became strange.

“This is the highest building of the resort,” he said calmly.

A cold wind blew, and she sneezed.

“Fine, let’s go.”

His expression dimmed, but he easily carried her down and left the rooftop.

She stayed quiet in his arms, head lowered.
