Chapter 26
The sky on New Yearâs Eve was incredibly beautiful and colorful.
Although night had fallen, everyone was growing increasingly excited.
Mr. Mo and Madame Mo were older and didnât want to stay up late. Even before the New Yearâs bell rang, they had already gone to their rooms.
Mo Xingyuan went to his room not long after dinner and didnât come out again.
Su Li and the servants lit a fire in the courtyard, gathering around it to keep warm and stay up for the New Year.
After chatting for a while, Su Li sent a message to Lu Jing to check how she was doing.
About half an hour later, Lu Jing called her.
Su Li got up and went aside to answer.
âHello, howâs it going?â
âIâm going crazy!â
Hearing this, Su Li frowned. âWhat happened?â
âI told my mom I wanted to break up with Wei Yu, but she absolutely refuses. She said everyone knows weâre dating, and if we break up, people will gossip about us.â
Lu Jing was furious. âI donât care what others say. Whatâs even more infuriating is that my mom hid my ID card and household registration book. She wants me to get a marriage certificate with Wei Yu right after the New Year.â
Just listening to her, Su Li felt a wave of pressure.
âWhat is your mom thinking?â
âI donât care. Tomorrow morning, Iâm taking a car and leaving,â Lu Jing said resolutely. âShe thinks she can just trap me at homeâbut itâs not going to happen.â
Su Li truly hadnât expected Lu Jingâs parents to be so dismissive of their daughterâs wishes.
âAnd what about Wei Yu?â
âI left his house around noon today. He called me in the afternoon and said itâs just for his parents and relatives to see. Once weâre married, itâll be just the two of us living together. If I donât want to do it, I donât have to.â
Lu Jing snorted lightly. âDo you think what he said is trustworthy? With the kind of people he grew up with, none of them are saints. I donât believe heâs some exception.â
Su Li knew Lu Jing was always clear-headed; what she said made sense.
âAs long as youâve thought it through.â
âIâve thought it through very clearly.â Lu Jing took a deep breath. âIâm grateful to have seen Wei Yuâs family so early, and Iâm also relieved that they were so eager to intimidate me. Otherwise, if I were already emotionally attached, or if they had fooled me until after the wedding before showing their true colors, I wouldnât even have a place to cry.â
âDonât worry about me. I think this is a good thing,â Lu Jing said, completely relaxed and even finding it amusing.
Su Li nodded. âIt really is a good thing. As long as youâve made up your mind. But tomorrow is only New Yearâs Dayâwhere are you going to find a car?â
âIâll just pay a high price,â Lu Jing said. âTickets for planes and high-speed trains are sold out now.â
âThen get some rest. Weâll talk when youâre back.â
âMm.â
After hanging up, Su Li couldnât help but sigh.
It was lucky that Lu Jing was capable, independent, and clear-headed; otherwise, she could have easily fallen into that vortex.
For women, marriage is never just about the two people.
At the very least, it involves two familiesâor more.
Those clueless relatives and friends all want to meddle as well.
Su Li sat back down. Her phone vibrated.
It was a message from Su Weiâan.
ăA Li, Happy New Year. When can you come back for a visit?ă
Su Li looked at it but didnât respond.
After a while, Su Weiâan sent another message.
ăA Li, we plan to visit the Mo family on the second day of the New Year. Our families are now relatives by marriage; itâs proper to visit each other.ă
Su Li felt her chest tighten.
She called him directly.
It rang only once before he picked up.
âA Li.â
âI thought I told you not to contact me again,â Su Li said coldly. âAlso, donât get involved with the Mo family.â
