Chapter 7

Two of Rong Ci’s coworkers secretly looked at Lin Wu, then quickly stepped back and pressed themselves against the wall.

Lin Wu also saw Rong Ci.

But she quickly looked away coldly, clearly not taking Rong Ci seriously. Surrounded by several managers, she walked into the elevator.

After the elevator doors closed, Rong Ci’s two coworkers finally let out a sigh of relief and immediately began gossiping excitedly.

“That must be President Feng’s girlfriend, right? Oh my God, she’s so beautiful! She’s wearing all designer brands. They must be really expensive, right? No wonder she comes from a wealthy family. She’s so confident and elegant. Her presence is totally different from ordinary people like us!”

“Exactly!”

Then they turned to Rong Ci and asked softly, “Rong Ci, what do you think?”

Rong Ci lowered her eyes and said calmly, “Yes.”

Lin Wu was actually her father’s illegitimate daughter.

Maybe “illegitimate daughter” wasn’t completely accurate.

When Rong Ci was eight years old, her father insisted on divorcing her mother so that Lin Wu and her mother wouldn’t suffer. He then married Lin Wu’s mother.

After her parents divorced, Rong Ci followed her mentally unstable mother and lived with her grandmother and uncle.

Over the years, her uncle’s business had declined, while the Lin family’s business had grown stronger and stronger.

It was said that to make up for the hardships Lin Wu suffered in childhood, her father gave her the best of everything and spent a lot of money on her education.

And Lin Wu did not disappoint. She was said to be outstanding in every way.

So the once-illegitimate daughter, Lin Wu, was now the rightful young lady of a wealthy family.

After being raised as a rich heiress for more than ten years, Lin Wu now had even more of the aura of a wealthy lady than Rong Ci had when she was the true daughter.

Rong Ci had thought that after childhood, she and Lin Wu would never cross paths again.

But fate seemed to favor Lin Wu.

She and Feng Tingshen had grown up together. But no matter how hard Rong Ci tried, Feng Tingshen never truly saw her. Yet when he saw Lin Wu for the first time, he completely fell in love with her—

“Rong Ci, are you okay?”

Seeing her pale face, her coworkers looked worried.

Rong Ci came back to her senses. “I’m fine.”

She and Feng Tingshen were about to divorce soon. Whoever he loved would have nothing to do with her anymore.

That day, Rong Ci did not pay any more attention to Feng Tingshen and Lin Wu.

She worked overtime until about nine at night. When she was almost done, her phone rang. It was her best friend, Chu Zilan.

Rong Ci answered, only to learn that Chu Zilan had drunk too much and needed her to pick her up from a restaurant.

Rong Ci quickly finished the documents in her hands, grabbed her car keys, and left the company.

Twenty minutes later, she arrived.

After getting out of the car and heading toward the entrance, a little girl walked out from the parking lot on the other side.

When Rong Ci saw the girl’s clear side profile, she stopped.

Xinxin?

Wasn’t she supposed to be studying in Country A? Why was she here… Had she returned with Feng Tingshen?

Although Rong Ci’s position did not allow her access to confidential company files, she knew that Feng Tingshen’s expansion work in Country A still needed some time to be completed.

She had thought he only came back briefly to handle some matters.

She didn’t expect their daughter to come back too.

She didn’t know exactly when they returned, but since she had seen Feng Tingshen early that morning, they must have been back for at least a day.

Yet her daughter had not called her at all to tell her they were back.

Thinking of this, Rong Ci tightened her grip on her bag. Looking at the small, lively figure skipping happily ahead, she quietly followed her.

When they reached the corner of the lobby, Lin Wu and several of Feng Tingshen’s friends appeared at the end of the hallway.

Rong Ci quickly turned and hid to the side.

Then she heard her daughter happily shout, “Aunt Wu Wu!” She ran forward and threw herself into Lin Wu’s arms.

Rong Ci sat down on a nearby sofa with her back to them, using plants and the back of the chair to hide herself.

“Xinxin, you came back too?”

“Yes! Because Aunt Wu Wu came back, Dad and I couldn’t bear to be apart from you. So Dad finished his work early and brought me back! We even came back the day before your birthday so we wouldn’t miss it!”

“This necklace was made by Dad and me. Aunt Wu Wu, happy birthday!”

“Wow, you and your dad made this yourselves? That must have taken a lot of effort. Xinxin, you’re amazing. I love it. Thank you!”

“I’m glad you like it!”

Feng Jingxin hugged Lin Wu and acted spoiled. “I haven’t seen you for a week, Aunt Wu Wu. I missed you so much. If I couldn’t call you every day, I wouldn’t have been able to stay in Country A…”

“I missed you too.”

At that moment, footsteps approached from the side.

Rong Ci froze.

It was Feng Tingshen.

Even without seeing him, she knew it was him just by the sound of his footsteps.

During the six or seven years of their marriage, she had waited for him almost every day.

His footsteps were just like him—steady, unhurried, calm.

Even with his own family, he was composed and indifferent, as if nothing in the world could disturb him.

She once thought nothing and no one could shake his heart.

But then Lin Wu appeared.

And that belief no longer held true.

Before she could think further, she heard her daughter call out, “Dad!”

Feng Tingshen’s friends greeted him.

He responded briefly and then said to Lin Wu, “Happy birthday.”

Lin Wu smiled. “Thank you.”

“Dad, didn’t you prepare another birthday gift for Aunt Wu Wu? Hurry and give it to her!”

The area suddenly went quiet. Then one of Feng Tingshen’s friends laughed and bent down to pinch Feng Jingxin’s cheek.

“That’s a private gift your dad prepared for Aunt Wu Wu. He’ll probably give it to her in private. We shouldn’t interfere, haha!”

The others laughed suggestively.

Then Feng Tingshen said, “I already gave it to her.”

“Huh? When?” Feng Jingxin asked, then pouted. “Dad, you secretly went to see Aunt Wu Wu without me again. Hmph!”

His friends burst into laughter.

Rong Ci, however, remembered that Lin Wu had gone to the Feng Group that morning.

He must have given it to her then.

Lin Wu smiled shyly. “Let’s not stand here. Let’s go upstairs.”

Their footsteps gradually faded away.

Rong Ci’s mind went blank.

Her heart ached deeply. After a long time, she finally came back to her senses. In silence, she entered the elevator and went upstairs to help her friend downstairs.

Chu Zilan and Lin Wu’s group happened to have private rooms on the same floor.

As Rong Ci supported Chu Zilan into the elevator, one of Feng Tingshen’s friends, Qi Yuming, paused in his steps.

Above the sky, the moon-like sphere shone with a silver radiance, bathing the darkness-covered earth in light. Before the monument at the center of Silver Shore Square, a small figure with pink hair stood tall. Xiaoyu raised her starlight staff high, the astrolabe at its tip slowly turning. Countless motes of starlight flowed from it, streaming upward into the “moon” in the heavens. The silver-white glow grew even brighter—like a vast sea of milk rippling across the night sky. The crowd around her stirred and murmured in awe. A few children standing in line couldn’t help themselves—they ran forward, dropped to their knees, and bowed before Xiaoyu. One by one, more people followed. The dark mass of humanity knelt as one, reaching out toward their savior, like the earth itself rising from the ocean depths as waves crashed and rolled outward, only to surge back again. The silver light washed over them all, shimmering like a tide that was slowly ascending to the heavens…
