Chapter 176 â Seal Released (2)
That night, a strategy meeting was held in the secret study of the East Wing.
Present were Annette, Loic, Norton, Enolius, and the priest Miel.
Everyone looked seriousâexcept Miel, who couldnât hide his excitement.
âYour Highness is finally about to manifest holy power!â
He cried out while making the sign of the cross.
âWhite light! Even ordinary priestsâ holy power isnât visible to the eye. If Your Highness begins to properly use it, just how incredible will your abilities becomeâŚ!â
âQuiet.â
Loic, who was carefully holding Annetteâs hand, frowned slightly as he looked at the bandage on her finger.
âIt looks like a deep cut. Shouldnât you just let a mage heal it?â
âItâs really just a small cut. And you said small wounds are better healed naturally.â
Enolius clicked his tongue and looked at Miel coldly.
âWell, this proves the Grand Temple is a group of frauds.â
âWatch your words.â
Miel snapped back angrily.
âIf not, then what about that womanâKathren or whateverâwhoâs pretending to be a saint while the real saint is standing right here?â
Enolius continued sharply.
âShe proudly says she came from the slums. Do you really think someone like that could fool everyone and act as a saint alone? The High Priest must be involved too.â
Mielâs face turned red, unable to openly admit that the Grand Temple was corrupt.
âI only met Lady Kathren once, but she seemed warm and kind.â
âAnd a fraud,â Loic said coldly.
Miel fell silent.
âBut why would the Grand Temple do something like thatâŚ?â
âThey were probably afraid rumors would spread that the divine oracle was wrong, weakening their position,â Loic said.
âOr they were worried the Empressâs influence would become too strong,â Annette added.
âThe Temple and the Empress constantly keep each other in check. They probably didnât like that I, a marquisâs daughter, was being called a saint.â
That had been around the time her father aligned himself with the Empress.
Loic gently stroked the back of Annetteâs hand, worried she might be hurt.
âIâm fine,â she said softly. âIâm not hurt by it.â
âI will help Your Highness reclaim the position that was stolen from you,â Miel said sincerely.
âSorry, but being the Grand Duchess is enough for me.â
Loicâs expression brightened slightly at her words.
âAs long as the dragon isnât targeting my holy power, I donât even want to know more about it.â
âBut Your Highness is the true saint!â Miel said, looking shocked that she could dismiss such a sacred calling.
He looked around for agreement, but Loic, Enolius, and even Norton all looked indifferent.
âYour Highness, possessing this level of holy power is unprecedented in the Empireâs history.â
Annette held up her injured finger.
âIf itâs so strong, why canât it even heal this small cut?â
âHoly power doesnât work on oneself.â
âExactly,â she shrugged. âSo it just means Iâd have to spend my life healing other people.â
And if she ever failed to help someone, she would feel guilty.
Being a saint praised by everyone sounded like a prison.
If she showed anger, people would say, âHow can a saint get angry?â
If she earned money, theyâd criticize her for seeking profit.
If she spent money, theyâd accuse her of being extravagant.
âI donât want to become a saint.â
She looked at Loic, and he nodded firmly.
âIf you do not wish it, we will hide it forever.â
Surprisingly, no rumors had spread outside the castle that she was a saint.
Inside the castle, however, everyone already treated her like one.
âAt least I want to learn how to control it.â
Loic looked at Miel.
âTeach the Grand Duchess how to handle her holy power until the dragon problem is resolved.â
âMy holy power is very weak⌠You would need the High Priestâs level to truly guide her.â
âSo youâre useless?â Loic asked flatly.
Miel quickly added, âI know the theory very well!â
âFor now, itâs enough if her holy power doesnât burst out randomly.â
Annette nodded.
âI just want to understand my own strength.â
Mielâs eyes lit up.
âIâve already applied for permission to visit the Grand Templeâs library. There are records of past saints that may help.â
He looked deeply moved.
âTo think I would guide the true saintâŚâ
Loic, watching him with displeasure, ordered that Norton must always accompany Annette whenever she met Miel.
Later That Night
It had been an exhausting day.
Seeing Annette struggling to stay awake, Loic suddenly lifted her into his arms.
âLoic?â
âYouâre tired. Please lean on me. Iâll carry you to your room.â
âI can walk.â
âPlease let me use this as an excuse,â he said softly, kissing her forehead. âIâve wanted to hold you all day.â
ââŚAlright.â
Her fatigue melted under his sweetness.
Ignoring Enoliusâs disgusted look, Loic carried her through the East Wing corridor.
Thenâ
The garden ahead shimmered with light.
âLoic, look!â
He changed direction toward the main garden.
The flowerbed where the Blueine flowers had been planted was glowing softly.
âWowâŚâ
Loic sat on a bench, placing Annette on his lap.
âItâs amazing that flowers can glow on their own.â
The Blueine flowers swayed in the breeze, their light flickering like tiny fairies.
âThey resemble you, Annette,â Loic said gently.
âBlueine?â
âThey shine on their own and melt the cold around them. AndâŚâ
He looked into her eyes.
âTheir blue glow reminds me of your eyes.â
âHow do you speak so beautifully?â
Loic laughed quietly.
âThereâs probably no one else in the world who says that about me.â
He leaned his head against her chest, and she gently stroked his black hair.
Then she spoke softly.
âI⌠saw my real fatherâs face.â
Loic lifted his head.
âCountess Selvanis gave me his portrait.â
Annette told him about her father and the locket she received.
It was difficult for her to say.
Her status as an illegitimate child was known publicly, but she had never spoken it herself.
âI hesitated about telling you.â
âWhy?â
Because in this world, illegitimate children were treated as incomplete.
And she had become Grand Duchess despite that.
Loic hugged her tightly.
âThat doesnât matter at all. Iâm just grateful you were born into this world.â
He said he wanted to see her fatherâs portrait someday.
âIâll show you.â
She felt a strange sadness whenever she looked at the portraitâperhaps because she had seen his nameless grave.
âLetâs visit him together someday,â Loic said gently. âI want to thank the man who allowed you to be born.â
She nodded quietly.
âI also have something to tell you,â Loic added.
âWhat is it?â
ââŚSoon.â
âSoon? Not now?â
âI want it to be a surprise.â
He smiled and kissed her as the flower fragrance drifted around them.
Late That Night
After Annette had gone to restâ
Loic walked down the stairs of the underground prison.
Norton and Enolius followed behind him.
They moved to the deepest cell.
Inside the iron bars, someone stirred.
âG-Grand DukeâŚ?â
Dirty hands gripped the bars desperately.
