Chapter 35
Things in life never go as expected.
Especially when someone is deliberately coming at you.
I thought Nathan would stay quiet, but he went around spreading the word everywhereâyet ironically, the one person I actually hoped would gossip said not a word outside the estate.
I underestimated Eclat far too much.
Even though I practically cast a magic spell telling her not to say a word to anyone, she actually kept her mouth tightly shut.
I genuinely appreciated it, butâthis was one of those times where a little gossip wouldâve been just fine!
It was well past noon, but the rumor Iâd been hoping to hear still hadnât reached my ears.
âEclat, did you hear anything from Elome today?â
âNo, my lady.â
Eclat replied sweetly as she dusted off the shelves.
I cleared my throat and tried again.
âDid you perhaps mention anything about me to Elome?â
âNo, of course not. You told me explicitly not to tell anyone, didnât you?â
âRight, I did. Thatâs true.â
âHonestly, itâs been a little awkward. Every time I go out, people wonât stop asking me things. âAre they really getting married?â âWhat did the Grand Duke give her as a wedding gift?â âWhat does the dress look like?â âWhy hasnât Lady Bernadette said anything?â I mean, itâs only natural for them to be curious when the main subject of all the rumors just stays locked up at home.â
âOh, goodness.â
âThey canât exactly ask the Grand Duke, so they all hound me instead.â
Eclat shrugged as if it was the most natural thing in the world.
âAnd every time, I just keep my mouth shut and act like I donât know anything.â
No, itâs okay to talk! Please, go ahead and talk! Say Iâm not getting married!
âOh, by the way, my lady.â
Eclat clutched her duster a bit tighter and glanced at me carefully.
âMy lady, are you really okay with all of this?â
I didnât know how to answer that question.
At this point, it felt like I couldnât escape no matter what I did.
This storyâitâs definitely trying to smother me to death this time.
No matter what I do, I canât get away from Jerlach. The entire plot and all the circumstances are like a trap set to erase me.
âIâm not sure.â
At that, Eclat lowered her voice to a whisper.
âDo you truly dislike the Grand Duke?â
The real problem wasâŚ
That I didnât dislike him.
I knew I had to get away from Jerlach. I knew that was the only way. Iâd been trying so hard to escape, to stay away.
But my heart kept saying something else.
I didnât hate him.
In fact, maybe⌠the opposite.
But if I stay tied to him like this, then in a few days, Iâll be completely erased from this story.
And after that?
What happens after I disappear?
Will the story just reset, starting from the beginning?
Will I simply be someone who never existed in the first place?
It might already be too late to turn things back.
Maybe Iâve already gone too far.
But even so, I couldnât answer whether this path was okay.
âI really donât know, Eclat.â
âMy ladyâŚâ
Eclat looked at me with concern in her eyes.
âWould you like me to bring you something sweet?â
Strangely, I didnât feel like eating anything sweet.
âItâs okay.â
âOh no! This is seriousâour lady is in real trouble!â
Eclat set down her duster and stepped closer to me.
âWhatâs with that expression?â
âIâm worried, thatâs all. You turning down sweets is a clear sign somethingâs wrong.â
âI donât know⌠I kind of feel like eating something spicy.â
âSpicy?â
âYeah, like tteokbokki, ramen, stir-fried baby octopus, grilled cartilage, chicken feet with soju⌠stuff like that.â
âPardon? What was that, my lady?â
âAh, never mind. Just pretend you didnât hear that.â
I let out a slow sigh. Thatâs when Eclat suddenly clapped her hands together like she remembered something.
âOh! My lady, todayâs the day!â
âWhat day?â
âItâs the 10th. You remember, the tea party at the Shurane Viscountâs estate?â
âOh⌠right. Thatâs today.â
I slowly nodded.
But I had neither the energy nor the heart to attend.
Besides, if I went to that tea party, everyone would swarm me asking whether the marriage rumor was true.
Still, if I did show up and said, âActually, weâre not getting married,â in front of all the gathered noble ladies, the news would spread like wildfire within an hour.
Then Jerlach would rush over. And if I ended things right there, it would be the perfect scenario.
That was the whole plan. What Iâd been trying to do all along.
But for some reason⌠I didnât feel like going through with it anymore.
That was when a thought crossed my mind.
âShould I ask one more time? I mean, no matter how hard I try, Jerlach clings to me like a leech. Maybe, like Eclat said, this really is fate.â
Maybe the astrologer made a mistake.
Sheâs just a personâitâs possible she was wrong!
Yes. I had to go and ask again.
I glanced at Eclat and casually spoke up.
âEclat, you wonât be able to see Elome unless I go, right?â
âMy lady, are you saying you wonât attend?â
âWell, Iâve been feeling really tired since yesterday. I think I need to rest.â
I pressed a hand to my forehead.
âOh no, are you okay?â
âI think I have a bit of a fever.â
âA fever? Oh my, what should we do?â
âI should just sleep for a while. Eclat, Iâm going to lie down. Go ahead and meet Elome.â
I blinked slowly as I rose to my feet.
âBut my lady, I canât just go out to have fun when youâre sick. Iâll go down and get some medicine.â
âNo, no. I think Iâll feel better if I just sleep it off. Iâll be asleep for a long while, so donât worry and go.â
Eclat hesitated.
But I knew. Just a little more push, and sheâd definitely go meet Elome.
âReally. Iâm just going to sleep.â
âMy ladyâŚâ
âOh, and Eclat. Please tell them at the Shurane estate that Iâm sorry I couldnât attend because I wasnât feeling well. Iâd really appreciate it.â
âAh, understood. Iâll come back quickly then.â
âNo, itâs fine⌠Iâm going to sleep, so take your time.â
Yes. Success!
While Eclat was off at the Shurane estate, I quietly snuck out of the house like a stray cat.
Worried someone might see me, I tied up my hair tightly and pulled my robe all the way over my forehead.
I knew I probably looked more suspicious in broad daylight dressed like this, but I had no choice.
I had to hurry. Eclat might come back early.
Thankfully, Jenniton Street wasnât far from the house.
Butâ
âWhat the⌠Iâm sure it was here.â
Iâve always had a decent sense of direction and was good at finding places, but no matter how much I looked, the astrologerâs shack was nowhere to be found.
âWeird. It should be right here.â
Had it vanished into the sky or sunk into the ground? It was completely gone.
What now? I really wanted to ask her again.
Tomorrow is the start of the festival.
I was just about ready to say, to hell with it, but the old womanâs chilling voice still lingered in my mind.
If entering this world from a book is possible, then vanishing from it surely isnât impossible either.
That uncertaintyâit scared me.
It terrified me.
And that fear always felt worse when I was alone.
But seriously, where did that old woman go?!
âRibe?â
Someone called my name. Instinctively, I turned around.
Completely forgetting I was supposed to be hiding my identity with a robe.
âIt really is you, Ribe. What are you doing here?â
The warm voice belonged to Adrian.
âLord Watford.â
âWhat now? Here to surprise me again?â
Adrian smiled gently, then stepped back and looked me over.
Yes, as you can seeâIâm in disguise.
âI didnât want anyone to recognize me, but I guess that didnât work.â
I raised both arms helplessly.
Adrian chuckled softly behind his hand and said,
âIs robe fashion going to be the next big trend?â
âStill as sarcastic as ever, I see.â
âNot sarcasm. Iâm just sayingâwhatever Ribe wears always becomes a trend.â
âAnyway, Lord Watford. Please pretend you didnât see me today.â
âIâm very tempted to ask whatâs going on⌠but alright. Iâll pretend I didnât.â
âThank you.â
I was just about to turn away when Adrian called after me.
âHey, Ribe.â
âYes?â
He looked like he had something to say, but hesitated.
âShall I walk you?â
âNo thanks. I am in disguise, remember?â
I replied a little snappishly, and he just smiled and nodded in response.
