Episode 40.
Almost two years had passed since Selenaās death when aĀ strange visitorĀ came to theĀ Valentine Dukeās mansion.
She hadĀ deep blue eyesĀ andĀ long golden hairāit wasĀ Rachel, once known for herĀ beauty and arrogance, now appearing inĀ worn-out, commonerās clothesĀ that didnāt suit her at all.
āMarriage? You and me? I thought that topic was over long ago,ā
Rachel said bluntly as she requested a private meeting with the Duke Hereis, and suddenlyĀ proposed marriage.
Hereis stared at her,Ā in disbelief and annoyance.
āThatās ridiculous. Youāre no longer my fiancĆ©e.ā
āI know. I also know you married Selena⦠and that she passed away,ā
Rachel replied coldly as if she was talking about a strangerās death.
ā…And I know you havenāt remarried. Itās been years.ā
Hereisās fist slammed onto the table in anger.
Bang!
āHow can you speak about her like that? She was your sister! Your own family!ā
If Rachel had truly considered Selena her sister, she would have at leastĀ pretended to grieve, not come here proposingĀ marriage.
āNot all siblings are close. You know that better than anyone, donāt you?ā
Rachel smirked as if Hereisās rage amused her.
āAnd donāt misunderstand. Iām not here out of love. Iām here for a mutual deal. You need a Duchess. I need a powerful household.ā
It was trueāHereis couldnāt keep the duchessās seat empty forever. His children were still young.
āI need the support of a noble house. You need someone to manage things when you’re away,ā
Rachel said, clearly aware of what he was thinking.
āā¦I have children,āĀ Hereis finally said.
āI do too,āĀ Rachel replied without hesitation, making Hereis raise an eyebrow.
āWhat, you ran off in the name of love? That mustāve been a scandal in your family.ā
Hereis almost laughed at the thoughtāselfish Rachel, speaking ofĀ love?
āWell, my second childās father isnāt the same as the first. It was⦠an unfortunate accident,ā
she said vaguely.
āDuring that time, I met a man. A commoner. He had platinum-blonde hair and blue eyes. He told me his storyāhe was raised as a noble familyās illegitimate son, but later found out he wasnāt blood-related at all.ā
Rachel’s voice was calm, but Hereis began feelingĀ uneasy.
āA father who loved him more than his real children⦠And he eventually left, unable to handle the guilt towards his half-siblings.ā
Hereis clenched his fist. HeĀ recognizedĀ the story.
It was aboutĀ Francis Valentine, his once half-brother.
āWhatās your point?āĀ he asked sharply.
āThe noble father gave him a family heirloom and told him to come back anytime. But instead, he left it for my daughter. He died from illness a few years ago.ā
Rachel chuckled softly after finishing her story.
Hereis didnāt feel anything upon hearing of Francisās death. Heād never understood him anyway.
āIāll never return. So donāt get attached to me, Hereis.ā
Francis had said that long ago.
Heād been brought into the family as a result of their fatherās affairāHereisās mother was devastated.
Sheād clung to Hereis, growing more obsessed by the day.
āYouāll never leave me, will you, my son? Youāre all I haveā¦ā
Hereisās father ignored her completely, treating Hereis as nothing more than a future heir while showing affection only to Francis and his maid mother.
Growing up, Hereis had lived inĀ fearĀ that his position would be taken away.
Francis, to Hereis, was always theĀ threat, the one who might takeĀ everything.
Then Rachel pulled out a necklaceāanĀ amethyst diamond, the same one said to be passed down from theĀ founder of the Valentine familyĀ to his wife.
Of all things,Ā FrancisĀ had givenĀ RachelĀ this sacred family treasure.
Hereis sighed.
āStill not convinced?āĀ Rachel asked with a sly smile.
āā¦Francis was the one told to return, not you. And certainly not your children.ā
āThen⦠Why donāt you meet my daughter? I think youāll like her very much.ā
Hereis was about to tell her to leave.
But Rachel simply turned to the door.
āCatherine, come in.ā
Creeeak.
The door opened slowly, and aĀ young girlĀ peeked inside.
Hereisās eyes widened.
āā¦!ā
Her hair wasĀ platinum-blonde, flowing in soft curls down to her waist.
She wore aĀ black ribbonĀ in her hair. Her eyesāthose bright blue eyesāstruck Hereis like lightning.
āSelenaā¦? No⦠It canāt beā¦!ā
The girl,Ā Catherine, hadĀ Selenaās exact eyesāthose eyes he had thought heād never see again.
His heart skipped a beat.
āCathy, what do you say?āĀ Rachel prompted.
āH-Hello! My name is Catherine!ā
The girl gave a polite bow. It wasnāt a nobleās etiquette, but it was respectful enough.
āā¦So your name is Catherine.ā
āYes! Are you⦠the man whoās going to be my new father?ā
She asked confidently, sweetly, with big trusting eyes.
āā¦How old are you?ā
āIāll be 11 this year!ā
She looked at him with the innocent certainty of a child who expected to be liked.
āā¦I see.ā
Rachel leaned in.
āShe looks familiar, doesnāt she?ā
She looked like Selena.
Though her overall beauty seemed to come from Rachel, the shape of her eyes, the color, even her expressionsāthey were all Selenaās.
āIs she yours? She doesnāt look much like you.ā
āOh, sheās mine. I gave birth to her myself,ā
Rachel said with a flat tone, not at all like a loving mother praising her daughter.
āCatherine, go wait with Alex now.ā
āā¦Okay.ā
Catherine glanced at both of them once more, then quietly left the room.
Hereis kept staring at the door she had just walked out of.
āā¦Selena looked just like her mother. So this child resembles my mother more than her,ā
Rachel commented with a twisted smile.
āSo⦠are you still going to reject my offer?ā
Rachel knew Hereis wouldnāt say noānot afterĀ seeing Catherine.
And she was right.
ThoseĀ blue eyes, so much likeĀ Selenaās, had stirred something in Hereisās heart. Something he hadnāt felt in a long time.
āThe choice is yours, Duke.ā
āā¦Iā¦ā
And just a few days later, theĀ Valentine estateĀ had aĀ new Duchess.
Thank you very muchāØ
