Chapter – 57
âUm⊠Nishida-senpai. Do you have a moment?â
That happened just as we were about to finish touring the school and head back to the café.
A female student called out to Kana-neechan.
Since she addressed her as âNishida-senpai,â she was probably the same age as me.
Kana-neechan turned her gaze toward the girl who had spoken.
âHm? What is it?â
âItâs about todayâs live performanceâŠâ
âDid something happen?â
âI already told Hayakawa-senpai, but she told me to âcancel itââŠâ
âWhat? Cancel it!? âŠWhy?â
âWell, um⊠she said something about it disrupting the schoolâs moralsâŠâ
âWhat is that supposed to mean? Thatâs just a flimsy excuse! What is Hayakawa-senpai even thinkingââ
At Kana-neechanâs words, the girl hesitated, then spoke with difficulty.
âShe said itâs not allowed because thereâs a boy among the band membersâŠâ
âThatâs not a problem at all! Everyone who plays in a band forms groups regardless of gender. Thereâs no one who complains about âbecause youâre a boyâ or âbecause youâre a girlâ like Hayakawa-senpai does.â
âBut stillâŠâ
âAnywayâif she has anything more to say, tell her to come talk to me directly.â
ââŠUnderstood. Iâll tell Hayakawa-senpai that.â
With that, the girl walked away.
Kana-neechan still looked unable to calm her anger.
âHonestly⊠Hayakawa-senpai, reallyâŠâ
She said that with a sulky expression.
Would everything really be okay?
âKana-neechanâŠâ
Worried, I called out to her.
Canceling a live performanceâwas that really something that could be done so easily?
I mean, wasnât the live show already part of the schoolâs official plan?
What would happen to the cultural festival schedule?
If the live got canceled, the bass guitar I brought as a personal item would be pointless.
Somehow, I was starting to feel more and more uneasy.
Kana-neechan quickly turned to me and smiled.
âItâs okay. Thereâs nothing you need to worry about, little brother.â
It was obvious she was saying that to keep me from feeling anxious.
âSo, does it look like the live can still happen?â
âThe teachers have already given permission, so the live itself isnât a problem, butâŠâ
âThereâs some other issue?â
âThe Hayakawa-senpai I mentioned earlier⊠she really hates boys.â
âDonât tell me she doesnât like the idea of me being on stage this time?â
âThatâs probably it.â
Thatâs just plain gender discrimination.
Still, no matter how much of a senior she was, she was just one student. Normally, it shouldnât become such a big issue.
âIf itâs just one student complaining, it shouldnât matter, right? Is she part of some committee, like the morals committee or something?â
âYouâre pretty sharp. Hayakawa-senpai is the vice president of the student council.â
âI see. Thatâs troublesome.â
âAnd thereâs something even more troublesome.â
âWhat is it?â
âThe student council president has taken an interest in me.â
âIn you, Kana-neechan? Why?â
âMy grades are pretty good, after all. Iâve caught their attentionâin a good way.â
âI see.â
Indeed, Kana-neechan had excellent grades.
She even placed first in exams every time, so it made sense that the student council would notice her.
âThe current student council president keeps telling me, âPlease become the next president,â and sheâs really persistent.â
âKana-neechan, student council president?â
âYeah. Honestly, Iâm not very interestedâŠâ
âI see. âŠBut if you became president, the school would probably feel a lot brighter.â
âDo you really think so?â
âIâm not a student at a girlsâ school, so I donât really know, but I think it would become a better school if you were president.â
ââŠBut then I wouldnât have much time to spend with you. And I have my part-time job, tooâŠâ
âRight. You do work part-time, donât you? I completely forgot.â
âHey! You meanieââ
Kana-neechan pouted and glared at me.
That expression of hers was actually pretty cute.
âOh, Kana⊠youâre finally back.â
When we returned to the café, Nao-san called out to us.
Kana-neechan tilted her head thoughtfully and looked at Takanashi-san and the others.
Something felt off.
The number of customers hadnât changed much, but somehow the place felt less lively.
âWhat happened?â
âWell⊠customers have been asking if the cute waitress from earlier isnât here anymore.â
Takanashi-san said that with a sigh.
From her expression, it was clear she was exasperated.
The reason people came to this cafĂ© was probably that âcute waitress.â
Kana-neechan glanced at me briefly, then turned back to Takanashi-san and asked again.
âCute waitress? Who are they talking about?â
âWell, um⊠itâs really hard to sayâŠâ
Takanashi-san looked troubledâand for some reason, she looked straight at me.
âNo way.
Thereâs no way thatâs true, right?
âUm⊠why are you looking at me?â
âWhy? Because one of the reasons so many customers come is you.â
âMeâŠ? Why?â
âI told you, didnât I? Thereâs a cute waitress.â
âAh⊠yes, you did.â
âThat âcute waitressâ is you, Kaede-kun.â
âWhat!? Wait a secondâI’m a guy!â
âWe know that. ButâŠâ
Takanashi-san pressed her fingers to her forehead in distress.
Just looking at her face, it was obvious there were complications.
âSo⊠youâre keeping quiet because you donât want to hurt the cafĂ©âs reputation?â
âExactly.â
ââŠSo until the cafĂ© event ends, you want me to keep helping out?â
I said that, even though I had a bad feeling about it.
I mean, Kana-neechan already told me Iâd be doing the live in this outfit, so I didnât really have room to complainâbut still.
Letting an outsider help in the cafĂ© didnât exactly look good.
Takanashi-san placed a hand on my shoulder and looked me straight in the eye.
âPlease help us.â
ââŠAlright.â
There was no way I could refuse.
Honestly, I wanted to decline with everything I hadâbut with Kana-neechan watching me so anxiously, I couldnât do that.
After all, it was Kana-neechan and Nao-san who invited me in the first place.
At this point, there was nothing to do but accept it.
The moment I stepped back into the café, cheers erupted from the customers.
âOh! Heâs back!â
âWeâve been waiting!â
âYouâre late! What were you doing?â
There were both men and women, and it seemed like everyone had been waiting for my return.
Well then⊠I guess I should live up to their expectations.
âSorry to keep you waiting, everyone. Iâll be right with you once Iâm ready!â
I waved to them and struck a cute pose like a girl would.
I couldâve gone with a more indifferent attitude, but I figured this would get a better reaction.
With that, I headed straight to the changing room.
As soon as I entered, Kana-neechan called out to me.
âYouâre really getting into it, arenât you, little brother?â
âWell, yeah. Since Iâm wearing a maid outfit anyway, I figured Iâd see how far I could go.â
âI see. This is coming from me, but you really are cute, so Iâm sure itâll go well.â
âThatâs exactly the problemâŠâ
I gave a wry smile.
To be honest, I didnât really want to rank first among the classâs attractions.
Since Takanashi-san, Kana-neechan, and Nao-san were all here, Iâd rather one of them take the spotlight.
All I did was imitate the waitresses Iâd seen at a maid cafĂ©.
It was just part of customer service.
Iâd been to a maid cafĂ© before, so I already knew how they treated customers.
I never imagined Iâd be the one doing it, though.
Well, since I was wearing a maid outfit anyway, I figured it was fine.
âŠAlright then.
Once Iâm ready, I should head back out and get to work.
