Chapter 7
Callion, terrified, wriggled and wailed:
âHeung⌠heung heung.â
âYou always pretend to be cute to slip out of situations, donât you?â
âIâm not cute!â
That word seemed to be his complex, judging by how sharply he reacted.
âTell me quickly how to become humanâŚâ
âOh, it doesnât happen overnight. You have to follow my training step by step.â
Callion looked at Shayla with eyes half suspicion, half anticipation.
âWeâll start the serious plan tomorrow. Be ready.â
Shayla pulled out the snack pouch she always carried. It contained steamed-and-dried sweet potatoes and thin dried apple slices.
âEat this for now.â
Callion stared at the sweet potato and apple slices with strange eyes, not opening his mouth easily.
âEat quickly!â
âOkay, okay.â
Callion approached with his nose to sniff, then slowly began chewing the sweet potato.
He was definitely very hungry. Yet he didnât devour it greedily, meaning it wasnât to his taste.
âWait a moment.â
Shayla gathered all the foul devilâs seeds into Henryâs leather pouch and headed to the servantsâ kitchen.
âThe cook is probably asleep, right?â
âGood heavens, Young Lady.â
Fortunately, Hanna was there. She stood up from where she had been gossiping with the other maids.
âAre you hungry at this hour?â
âYes. Cook me some meat. Something tender.â
She had heard the young duchess only ate fresh vegetable-based food, so Hanna was surprised but nodded without comment.
âIf you want tender meat, we have lamb. Shall I grill it?â
âYes.â
âIâll go to the pantry manager.â
After quickly going and returning, Hanna came back with grilled lamb.
âWonât you eat in the dining room?â
âIâll take it to the room and eat with Callion.â
âBe careful, the plate is hot.â
Even though it was on a silver tray, hot steam rose, and the strong meat smell was intense.
My nose suffered the whole way back to Callionâs room.
âItâs just bringing food.â
How could I not do this for a starving seven-year-old groom?
* * *
âWhat did you bring this time?â
Callion was standing at the door waiting for meâimpressive.
âLamb.â
He recognised the meat type instantly by scent. His tail waggedâhe seemed happy.
âDo you like lamb?â
âNot particularly⌠I donât mind.â
He answered arrogantly, then hopped onto the sofa beside me. He calmly placed his front paws on my lap and watched.
âWhat are you doing now?â
âCutting the meat so itâs easy for you to eat.â
Suddenly a strong huff came from his nostrils.
âIâm not a child.â
ââŚâŚâ
If his ears were fully upright, maybe.
âThis pea-sized little thing has huge prideâŚâ
I had a lot to say, but I held back. I couldnât discourage him further in his current state.
âSeven is still a child. Hoo, hooâŚâ
I cooled the hot lamb and placed it in front of his nose. He glanced at me, then devoured it ravenously.
âHow is it?â
âDeliciousâŚâ
Seeing him eat while whimpering heung-heung made me realise how awful the devilâs seed had been.
âIâm done.â
âChew and swallow!â
His jaw barely moved!
âThe meat was small.â
He said that, but he would have done the same even if Iâd cut it into big pieces.
Gulp.
âIâm done.â
âPlease chew and eatâŚâ
How delicious must the meat have been for him to act like this? On the other hand, I felt sorry for the boy who had lived three months on one garlic a day and couldnât bring myself to scold him further.
âFrom tomorrow⌠you have to chew properly.â
I quickly went down to the kitchen and brought three more plates of steak.
He must have been starvingâhe devoured four portions of lamb in no time.
âWill you bring food tomorrow too, Shayla?â
âYes. Iâll take care of three meals a day.â
His tail wagged quietly.
âIâll come early tomorrow morning.â
His tail wagged faster.
âGood night, Callion.â
I think I earned some points today. He even walked me to the door.
âSee you tomorrow.â
He said nothing as I waved and closed the door, but I wasnât disappointed.
Compared to our first meeting when he wouldnât even look at me, this was already luxurious treatment.
When his small body disappeared from view, the realistic worries I had forgotten returned.
âIâve gotten myself into trouble. How am I going to make him human?â
I had spoken confidently in front of Callion, but of course it was a lie.
âHow am I supposed toâŚâ
make him human?
My twin sister, who grew up with me, is still a rabbit!
If I really knew the way, I would have helped my sister first.
I had told Duke Graywolf I would âtry,â but I wasnât sincere then.
I only said it to stay in this castle and not be kicked out.
But for this boyâŚ
âItâs all because of that damned devilâs seed.â
Without thinking, I made huge promises to Callion. If he hadnât been eating garlic, I wouldnât have said it.
But I wasnât afraid of the responsibility.
âEven if he never becomes human, itâs fine. I can take care of him for life.â
Like a precious jewel, just as Iâm doing now.
I pulled the blanket up to my neck, looked at the ceiling painting of running wolves, and made a vow.
It doesnât matter whether he is human or wolf.
âHe is already my husband.â
ThereforeâŚ
âTurning this pup into a humanâŚâ
