Chapter 36
There was a knock.
When I opened the door, Lord Roland was standing there.
His bangs were at the âsleep-deprived angle,â tilted 0.7°.
(Cute.)
But before I could press that âcuteâ into my thoughts, something deep in my chest stepped forward.
âGood morning. Thank you for the stars last night.â
âYeah⌠sorry. âHere.â
He handed me a three-line âGood morning.â
At line two, my heartbeat suddenly dropped.
âYou were happy to seek uncertainty.â
Not a denial, not an evaluationâjust acceptance.
âYouâre cute.â
âYouâre the only one who manages your weak spots yourself.â
We laughed softly together, and the morning tension faded.
Sharing the steam of our drinks, I searched for my own words.
âLord Roland⌠it was I who said the stars alone were enough.
Last night, I wanted words, but I couldnât allow myself.â
âCouldnât allow yourself?â
âI hate âuncertainty I canât control,â so I set a âsignal I can measure,â
but I hated myself for finding that signal insufficient.
I was confused about wanting your feelings for myself.â
Putting it into words felt pathetic.
But if I didnât say itâwe would misunderstand each other.
Lord Roland set down his cup and nodded quietly.
âLetâs have a quiet clash here.â
âQuietâŚâ
âYes. No raising our voices. No forgetting the signal.
Weâll clash your âdonât likeâ and my âwant toâ in three lines.â
He placed two cards on the table.
One for me, one for himself.
Quiet Clash â Three Lines (Iris)
-
A night with only stars was lonely
-
But I made the star rules
-
Tonightâ I want words (even knowing itâs contradictory)
Quiet Clash â Three Lines (Roland)
-
I kept it star-only to make it home alive
-
I wanted to respect your rules
-
Tonightâ Iâll prepare words and make it home alive
Perhaps this was enough.
My âdonât likeâ and his âwant toâ were facing the same direction.
Even so, somewhere deep in my chest, a small ache remained.
(I said I wanted it. Then I need to step into the unmeasurable.)
âLord Roland.â
âYes?â
ââNot âmay I hug you?â but please hug me.â
My voice trembled slightly.
âNot as a âconfirmation technique,â but as an âimpulse.ââ
Relief shimmered in his eyes.
The next moment, his quiet arms wrapped around me.
The scent was light, the warmth sufficient.
At the moist center, my heartbeat settled into a rhythm usable in daily life.
âIris.â
âYes.â
âI respect that you hate âuncertainty you canât control.â
Because you use it to avoid hurting anyone.
But if you seek uncertainty from me, Iâll improve every day, even while failing.â
âFailâŚ?â
âNights when I could only send stars. Nights when words canât catch up.
âEvery time, Iâll return and wait, continuing by your side.
Let your fear sit in a chair thatâs okay to leave behind.â
Something unraveled deep in my chest.
(Unmeasurable, yet warm. This is what Iâll call an embrace.)
âWhat about the self-report section?â
Saying it while embracing might be ridiculous.
Yet, we never forget the skin of comedy.
He laughed and wrote on the card across his back.
(Embrace cute (silent))
âThe classification is gentle.â
âBecause itâs for you.â
I wrote on mine between breaths.
(Uncertainty tolerated (slight))
ââŚSlight?â
âYes. Going to the maximum suddenly is dangerous. Start with a dosage usable in daily life.â
We laughed together and loosened the hug just a little.
Morning light streamed in, and the sunlit warmth grew.
