~Chapter 72~
“Allen!”
I quickly called out his name.
“Are you okay?”
Then I heard his strained voice from below.
“Huff… I think I broke my back⌔
“Hold on! Iâm coming down.”
Worried the door above might close, I hurriedly climbed down the ladder.
âB-Be carefulâŚâ
I was about halfway down whenâ
Clunk!
A noise came from above. The door had shut.
âSo the underground was realâŚâ
I thought it was just a figure of speech.
As soon as my feet hit the ground, I rushed to Allen. He was picking up the things that had fallen from his bag.
âAre you really okay?â
He nodded awkwardly.
âYou said you hurt your back.â
âItâs more embarrassing than painful, honestlyâŚâ
âThatâs your concern?â
âI failed to maintain my dignity as a knight.â
Seeing him joke made me feel relieved.
Allen followed me as I turned to look around.
âLetâs keep this between us, okay?â
âBut isnât that considered neglecting your duty?â
ââŚ.â
I walked along the path where the water flowed. Vines I didnât recognize grew along the walls, and they glowed faintlyâclearly not plants from the Empire.
âThis doesnât look like an ordinary drainage system.â
Allen commented as he glanced around. He had a pointâthe water was surprisingly clean, even clear enough to see the bottom.
ââŚOver there, maybe.â
Across the stone bridge, there was a shabby little tent.
âLetâs go.â
Although Allen had seemed unsure earlier, now he looked full of curiosity.
âExcuse me, is anyone hereâŚ?â
Judging by the displayed herbs and strange items there, it seemed someone lived there.
âWho even buys something like parrot feathers?â
Allen scratched his head, clearly puzzled.
âLeave if youâre not buying anything.â
A groaning voice came from under the counter. Then a young girl stood up, stretching her back.
âPlenty of other people will buy even if you two donât!â
Blinking, I glanced at Allen. His expression said what I was thinking, too.
âIsnât she way too youngâŚ?â
She was a girlâprobably no older than eightâdespite her old-fashioned way of speaking.
Allen asked kindly, âWhere are your parents?â
âDonât have any,â she replied bluntly.
His face went pale.
âHaha, Allen, youâre too muchâŚâ
I nudged him with my elbow.
âYouâre the owner here?â
âYep. Is that a problem?â
Not liking how much taller I was, the girl climbed on a box so we could be eye-to-eye. Then, waving her hand like we were intruding, she said,
âIf youâre not buying, leave. Iâm not like my auntiesâI only serve real customers.â
âWe are customers. We came to buy something.â
Her eyes narrowed suspiciously.
âI-I heard thereâs a thing that can preserve my beauty⌠f-forever.â
I stumbled over my words, cringing at how ridiculous they sounded.
âSo you also think about that kind of stuff often, huh?â Allen teased.
No! Thatâs not it!
âIf youâre here for information, you shouldâve just said so,â the girl said confidently.
âMy relatives handle the products, but information? Thatâs my specialty.â
Thankfully, weâd said the magic words. I breathed a quiet sigh of relief.
She leaned in and whispered, âBut you need to show a bit of sincerityâŚâ
Her greedy expression was surprisingly intense for a child.
âAs much as needed.â
I signaled Allen, and he handed me the bag. I took out a pouch of gold coins and placed it on the table.
âWhereâs the item?â
Though she had doubted us, the moment she peeked into the pouchâ
âWhoaâŚ!â
Her eyes widened, and she instantly broke into a grin.
âCan I call you âsisterâ from now on? Iâm Penny!â
Fast talker. I like that.
âThat item is very rare, so we canât get it for you directly. But we can invite you to the auction where it will be sold. Would that be okay?â
Penny had climbed down from her box and looked up at me.
âAuction?â
âYes. Itâs a secret, but the Tower Master has awakened recently, and itâs an auction heâs hosting.â
ââŚWho told you that?â
âEven for you, I canât say that. My lips are sealed when it comes to sources.â
Penny clasped my hands like she was begging for understanding â though she also seemed to be eyeing how many more gold pouches were in the bag.
âBut if the Tower Master only just woke up, then⌠who made the item? Surely itâs not the apprentices?â
âOf course not.â
âThen who?â
âIf you want more answersâŚâ
Her eyes flicked toward the bag again. She smiled sweetly, and I returned a calm smile.
âI donât really need the auction invite. Do I still need to pay more?â
ââŚYou sure are stingy for someone so rich.â
Penny sighed, then finally answered,
âIt belongs to someone even greater â a forgotten Grand Mage.â
â…!â
âThatâs all I can say. But money does loosen my lips.â
I placed another pouch on the table.
âYouâre sure itâs the Grand Mageâs?â
âAbsolutely. I only sell accurate info.â
If itâs a forgotten Grand Mage, then it must be Ailins.
âHestia said she was looking for this itemâŚâ
That means rumors must already be spreading among noble ladies. Especially with the news of Peril awakening.
Maybe theyâre using Perilâs fame to sell it, but in truth, the item belonged to Ailins.
Now that I think about it, Iâve never actually heard of Peril making magic items. The timing of the awakening rumor made people jump to conclusions.
Whoever spread the rumor didnât lieâjust twisted the truth.
âPerilâs the bait. Ailins is the real deal.â
Itâs said a mageâs power grows the more their name is remembered. With this monthâs event, many people would gather.
âDid you spread the rumors?â
âIâve got a loud voice,â Penny giggled.
âIâd prefer if you stopped talking about the auction and the Tower Master.â
âI donât want to either, but I made a promise to him⌠The time limit hasnât passed yet.â
She lowered her gaze like she was helpless.
I took out another pouch.
ââŚ!â
âStill not enough?â
She stared at it, then hurriedly clutched it to her chest.
âThen Iâll buy the rest of your promise.â
âYouâre really making it hard for meâŚâ
She trailed off while fidgeting with the coins.
Was she asking for more?
I squinted. She quickly said,
âO-of course, I always listen to my big sis! Letâs just say itâs a deal!â
âOne more thing.â
Penny looked up expectantly.
âI want to find the Tower Masterâs whereabouts.â
She didnât look happy. After a moment of thought, she placed the coins down.
Of course, she wouldnât talk for free.
I put another pouch on the table.
She stared at the remaining pouches and gulped.
âSister, you can ask me more if you wantâŚâ
âThatâs all I need.â
I closed the bag. Penny panicked and quickly said,
âT-Then how about this?â
âWhat?â
âYou need info, and I need money. So⌠hire me! Who knows? You might need me again.â
ââŚâ
âJust leave the bag with me, and Iâll prove Iâm worth the pay!â
She reached for the bag like she couldnât bear to part with it.
âHmm⌠Should I?â
At that, she pouted and walked over to Allen â and kicked him in the leg.
âW-What are you doing?!â
Allen looked shocked.
Then, with a weird expression, he turned to me.
âMy lady, shall we return to the mansion now? My ears feel like theyâre ringing. I think I need rest.â
His words confused me, but the bag in my hand suddenly felt heavier.
When I looked down, Penny was holding it with pleading eyes.
âI keep secrets really well. Donât you trust me yet?â
So someone is trying to get Ailins name back on the map thatâs why theyâre promoting the auction and the item.
Maybe itâs Erkisian? Tho idk why he would do that đ¤đ¤
I think so too
*sigh* this is why adults shouldnt abuse their children. just look how fucked up ricardo grew up to be. cant stay mad at him, i hate it.
