Chapter 62…
To Run or Not to Run
The Sharpness of Words
Climbing the stairs, I reached my apartment on the fifth floor of the building.
I unlocked the door and stepped inside.
âExcuse me for intruding~â
First, I set my bag down in its usual spot and sat in the chair at my workspace.
Then I opened my laptop and pulled up my previous records.
Now thenâwhat to do about that Scorpio?
The most realistic approach would be to âfight it until it runs out of starlight energy, then collect the plate it turns into.â
Thatâs how I recovered Aquilaâs plate, after all.
But this time, the opponent is Scorpioâone of the Twelve Constellations. Thereâs no doubt itâs a powerful enemy.
Iâm not sure I can take it down completely⌠but I have no choice but to try.
Still⌠judging from what I saw, Scorpio doesnât seem to have chosen anyone yet.
If I recover it, maybe I could use its power too.
But thereâs no precedent for one person wielding multiple constellationsâ powers.
âŚWell, considering Iâm the first person ever to generate a Star Armor, thatâs not surprising.
Still, thereâs no way to know without trying.
Fortunately, Iâve just received another replica gear for experiments.
With multiple gears, I can test whether itâs possible to use multiple constellations at once.
It didnât work with Aquila or Musca⌠but if itâs one of the Twelve, maybe itâll be different.
After all, so far, only the Twelve Constellations have successfully generated Star Armor.
For data collection purposes too, I absolutely have to recover Scorpio.
If only Homura-san were here right nowâsheâd be a big help⌠but where could she be?
Just then,
a voice reached my ears.
âWow⌠Yinsei-kun, your home life is pretty intense too.â
ââŚWait. Why the hell are you here?â
Turning toward the voice, I saw Chiharu Hanayama sitting on the sofa.
âWhen I caught up, I called out to you, and I said âexcuse me for intrudingâ when I came in, remember?â
âŚCompletely missed it. Or rather, I hadnât been paying attention.
Now that she mentions it, I vaguely recall someone speaking to me earlier.
I mustâve let her in here without realizing it.
âŚGuess I was too focused on my thoughtsâand on recovering my right arm.
Though thanks to that, my arm doesnât feel off anymore.
Maybe Iâve just gotten too used to being around people lately. It doesnât even feel strange anymore.
I really should be more careful when walking and thinking at the same time⌠I need to stay sharper.
Annoyed at myself for missing so much, I turned to Hanayama with a question.
âWhyâd you follow me?â
âNo reason, really.â
âŚAs usual, I have no idea what sheâs thinking.
And besidesâ
âHanayama, youâve gotten pretty comfortable acting with us lately, huh.â
âThat a problem?â
âŚMaybe I shouldnât have said that.
I quickly replied, âDidnât say it was.â
But Hanayama didnât respond.
Finding that odd, I lifted my gaze from the laptop to her.
She was staring at me with a sharp look.
Not quite glaringâbut there was something intense in her eyes.
âŚWhat emotion is that, exactly?
Our eyes stayed locked for several seconds.
Then Hanayama spoke first.
âRemember when you asked me about the way I talk?â
âYeah⌠I did. What about it?â
âIâm answering now: you definitely need to fix it.â
Ah. So thatâs why she came.
âŚA pain, but since sheâs already in my room, I canât exactly escape.
I sighed inwardly and said, âYou mean that thing from earlier, huh.â
âI just said the truth.â
âListen, even if somethingâs true, sometimes you shouldnât say it. The truth can hurt people. You should dull your words a bit.â
âŚSheâs not wrong.
But people canât live on kind words alone.
Still, thereâs no point telling her that.
I managed to respond, ââŚIf Iâm not sharp, Iâll just lose.â
Hanayama sighed.
âI get what youâre saying. But the ones youâre fighting now are monsters, not people, right?â
âŚThatâs true.
Seimou High isnât like that other schoolâwhere our classmates were the enemy.
âŚJust remembering those guys pisses me off.
As I cursed under my breath, Hanayama pressed on.
âBesides, youâll have to talk to people a lot when gathering intel on the monsters, wonât you?
Then you really should fix your tone. Try wrapping your words in a bit more sugar, at least.â
She had a point.
Who knows how long these battles will lastâor how many new people Iâll have to deal with.
Unfortunately, Hanayama was right.
Even ShirĹ and Nagasawa have told me before that I should change how I speak.
âŚGuess I should finally do something about it.
ââŚIâll do my best,â I muttered.
âAnd also, next time you see Sayama-san, you should apologize.â
âThat depends on her.â
Hanayama sighed again.
That one I recognizedâit was the sigh of exasperation.
After that, she fell silent and started scrolling on her phone.
I turned my focus back to the laptop and resumed organizing my data.
