Chapter 43…
For Those Who Cannot Fight
I Want to Be Like You Two
âI canât anymore⌠I canât moveâŚâ
Yui muttered that as she collapsed right in the entrance of the dojo, not even bothering to take off her shoes.
I wanted to say, âAt least try to keep up appearances,â but since her feetâwith the shoes still onâwere resting on the earthen part of the entryway, I decided to let it go.
Still, I had to admire her. After that battle, she managed to walk all the way back to the Hirahara Dojo. Iâd like to praise her, but honestly, I was at my own limit too.
Without saying a word, I slumped against the wall and let my body sink down.
Seeing our state, Hirahara ShirĹâs mother came out from the back, looking worried. She offered us something to drink, which we gratefully accepted.
Maybe because I was so tired, the water soaked through my whole body more deeply than usual.
Finally, my head started to clear.
Though not as bad as before, the fatigue from using too much magic today was intense. Truthfully, I just wanted to go home and sleep.
But there was no time to rest.
The cleanup at the battle site could be handled by the Supernatural Incident Investigation Team, but what I had to do nowâthis was something only I could handle.
Forcing away my exhaustion, I stood up.
Taking off my shoes, I stepped up into the dojo and called out to Hirahara ShirĹ, who had gone in before me.
âHm? What is it?â
âShow me the back of your left hand.â
âHuh? Ohâwhat the hell is this!?â
ShirĹ shouted in shock as he looked at the back of his hand.
There, on his skin, was a mark that no normal human would haveâa constellation crest.
And when I saw the pattern engraved there, the strange feeling Iâd had during the fight finally made sense.
âThis shape⌠so thatâs what it wasâŚâ I muttered without thinking.
Then Yui came over, curious.
âWhat is it? Whatâs going on?â
âOh! ShirĹ-kunâs been chosen too!â
âWaitâwhat? What do you mean?â
Yui struggled to explain, though âstrugglingâ might be putting it lightly.
âŚActually, isnât she recovering a bit too quickly?
No, thatâs fineâit works out.
I motioned to her, and together we showed ShirĹ the marks on the backs of our own left hands.
âTheyâre⌠the same?â
âRight! âŚSo, Maa-kun, which constellation is his?â
The two tilted their heads in confusion.
âŚYui, after all Iâve taught you, you should at least recognize the twelve zodiac constellations by now.
Suppressing a sigh, I answered, âThatâs Leo.â
âHuh? Wasnât Leo supposed to be ShĹji-san?â
âApparently not. Before that fallen starâOphiuchusâdisappeared, he called him âLittle Lion.â So itâs probably Leo Minor. That would explain the speed⌠and how he resisted the spell.â
The fire magic Iâd usedâamplified through an incantationâshouldâve overwhelmed any normal target.
But the fallen star hadnât gone down.
Even though I had narrowed my spell to a specific constellation, it still enduredâthat had bothered me.
Now I understood: he wasnât Leo, but Leo Minor.
That speedâit mustâve been his innate ability.
Leo Minor isnât one of the twelve zodiac constellations, nor one of Ptolemyâs original forty-eight, so its raw power shouldnât be that high.
But when combined with his personal strength and karate skills, he became a formidable opponent nonetheless.
While I was piecing together this new information, ShirĹ mumbled, âWait, what does all that mean?â
âŚDidnât I just explain this?
âIt means youâve been chosenâsame as us.â
âSo that meansâŚâ
âExactly!â Yui jumped in, grinning. âShirĹ-kun, you can fight with us now! Isnât that great?â
âŚWas it really âgreat,â though?
Well, thatâs not for me to decide.
Still, I couldnât ignore one thing: focusing magic on a single target weakens it against everything else. Thatâs a flaw Iâll have to fix somehow.
âSo, ShirĹ,â came a voiceâit was Taiga-san, who had apparently been waiting for our return.
ShirĹ faced him and spoke.
ââŚIt was true. Big brother ShĹji⌠was that monster.â
âI figured as much. And?â
âAnd⌠Iâve been chosen to fight, too. So Iâm going to fightâjust like them. Iâll stop him myself.â
ââŚI see.â
Taiga-san said nothing more.
ShirĹ turned toward us, determination burning in his eyes.
âSo pleaseâlet me fight him! Please!â
âDonât bow your head like that!â
Yui rushed over, trying to get him to raise his head, but ShirĹ stayed where he was, still bowing deeply toward me.
âŚMaybe he still felt guilty about how Iâd scolded him on the rooftop before.
But honestly, Iâd already decided what to say back when I heard him shout earlier.
I walked up and placed my right hand on his left shoulder.
âWe donât know when the next battle will be, so weâll have to get you ready fast. No time to rest, ShirĹ.â
âMasatoâŚ! Yeah! Iâm counting on you!â
âAwesome! Now ShirĹ-kun can fight alongside us for real!â
Finally, ShirĹ lifted his head and exchanged a high-five with Yui.
âŚWhy is she this happy, though?
Then Taiga-san spoke again.
âShirĹ.â
âWhat is it?â
âIf youâre going to do this, do it properly.â
ââŚYeah, I know.â
âAnd donât you dare use this as an excuse to slack off on your studies.â
âUghhhh! I know, okay!?â
At that, everyone except ShirĹ burst out laughing.
He probably didnât find it funnyâbut even I couldnât help but chuckle.
Yui tried to comfort him, saying, âIâm bad at studying too, but letâs do our best together, okay?â
Coming from someone giggling mid-sentence, it wasnât exactly persuasive.
As I watched the two of them bicker, Taiga-san stepped up to me.
âMasato-kun. Please take care of my son.â
âYes, sir. Leave him to me.â
âAnd rememberâyouâre still a student yourself. Donât overdo it.â
I appreciated the concern but didnât quite know how to respond.
After a moment, I managed, â…Iâll just do what I can.â
Then the energetic pair barged back into the conversation.
âWhat are you two talking about?â
âWait, Maa-kun! Weâve got a big problem!â
âWhat now?â
âWell, you have to teach ShirĹ-kun all kinds of stuff, right? And we still need to learn karate, and weâve got schoolâand the sports festival training starts soon! That means weâre gonna be super busy!â
For some reason, the two of them seemed panicked. Personally, I didnât see the problem.
And soâjust like thatâthe number of Divine Inheritors chosen by the stars had grown to three.
