Chapter 47. Always Through Someone Elseâs Mouth
That afternoon, after plenty of rest, Belladonna was taking a walk in the garden when she suddenly heard someone running toward her.
A man stopped in front of her and bowed deeply, shouting,
âMadam, I apologize for my rudeness!â
Who is it?
She looked carefully and realized it was Graham, breathing hard as if heâd run from the training grounds just to see her.
âOh, itâs Graham.â
Belladonna gave him a gentle smile and shook her head, letting him know it was okay.
Graham checked her face with concern and said again,
âYou seemed to drink a lot with me last night⌠Since you came down so late, I was worried you might have had a terrible hangover.â
Oh, it wasnât because of that that I came down lateâŚ
Belladonna pulled her lips into an embarrassed smile and shook her head again.
âWhat? You gave Madam alcohol?â
Hazel, who had followed Graham, asked in shock.
âBe quiet, rookie. Go train, why did you follow me?â
âI just came to greet Madam too! Did you sleep well, Madam?â
Belladonna nodded, smiling warmly at Hazel.
Hazel bowed as if receiving a blessing from a saint.
A moment later, he said,
âBy the way, the captain seemed full of energy today. He only watched the morning training for a bit, but the whole order of knights was exhausted.â
âHeâs always full of energy,â Graham replied.
âNo! Today was different. He had so much work, but still supervised our trainingâŚâ
Full of energy, even today After being up all night with me? Belladonna thought, suddenly amazed by his stamina.
âHe looks busy, like he has two bodies. Well, he did say heâd have to return to Griblata soon, so maybe thatâs why heâs pushing himself.â
While Belladonna was remembering the previous night, Grahamâs words made her jerk her head up.
Escallion⌠has to go back to Griblata?
Hazel noticed her shock and quickly said,
âOh, itâs not certain yet! Maybe itâll just be a quick trip. Lord canât leave his domain for long.â
âNo, this time he said he wouldnât come back. Thatâs why he called the Griblata knights here. Would he have done that if he was staying? Not at this safe villa in Sirlenia!â Graham insisted.
âUgh, enough!â Hazel elbowed Graham in the side, clearly annoyed.
News like thatâshe really should hear from her husband, not someone else.
âOw!â
âThatâs why you always get scolded by your wife!â
âWhat? Why did the subject suddenly change? Did I say something wrong?â
Belladonna, watching the two bicker, quickly returned to her usual gentle expression and pointed subtly behind her.
Can I leave now
Hazel caught on and nodded,
âYes, yes! Please, go on. Weâll get back to training.â
âIâm not done talking! Madam, about what I said last nightââ
âEnough! Letâs go! Canât you see Madamâs busy?â
âShe doesnât look that busyâŚâ
âPlease, just stop!â
Hazel covered Grahamâs mouth and dragged him off.
Belladonna turned away from them and headed back to the house.
Escallion⌠going back to Griblata? I want to hear that from him directly.
âOh, Madam? Youâre back already? I was just getting a hat for you, the sunâs so strong today.â
Cindy looked surprised in the lobby.
Belladonna just nodded and headed straight upstairs.
âŚItâs always like this,
Belladonna thought.
Escallion rarely told her things himself.
The fact they came to Sirlenia together, that the knights would visit, stories about his past, even about Scarlett, and now about returning to Griblata⌠she never heard any of it from him first.
Will I always have to hear about my husband through someone else?
As she climbed the stairs, Belladonna looked down at her hand clutching the banister.
The diamond ring sparkling on her finger suddenly felt empty.
Sometimes she felt so close to him, her heart full. Other times, the distance between them was so clear it made her wonder if it had all been in her head.
âSighâŚâ
Belladonna reached the third floor in no time and strode toward his office.
Knock knock!
âCome in,â came his low voice from inside.
She opened the door sharply. Escallion was at his desk, reading papers, but looked up at her with surpriseâand then warmth.
âBella? Is something wrong?â
Belladonna took a deep breath and slowly walked over to him. The closer she got, the higher he tilted his head to look at her.
At his desk, Belladonna scanned for pen and paper.
âYou can just talk. No one else is here.â
Escallion saw her reaching for the pen and encouraged her.
In a very small voice, Belladonna asked,
âIsnât there anything you want to tell me?â
Her cold tone made Escallion instantly nervous.
The gentle, soft wife in front of him had suddenly become distant and cold.
He searched his mind quickly and said,
âSomething to sayâŚ?â
âYes.â
What could he say? She wasnât asking for a compliment or anything like that. If she was, her face wouldnât look like this.
He gulped and tried to smile.
âItâs not time for a meal, so it canât be that. I already said I was busy, so we didnât make any plans. What do I have to say?â
Belladonna just tilted her head, staring at him in silence.
Damn, there is something⌠I just donât know what.
He fell silent, thinking hard. Belladonna spoke first.
âWhen are you leaving?â
âLeaving where?â
âGoing back to Griblata.â
âAh.â
Escallion frowned, then quickly answered,
âMaybe within this week? Didnât I tell you?â
âYou didnât. And⌠when will you be back?â
âI probably wonât be able to come back. Even coming here this time was really pushing it.â
Belladonna let out a quiet sigh and looked at him.
Not understanding, Escallion got up and came around the desk, trying to smooth things over.
He gently stroked her arms.
âAre you upset because I might take you with me?â
Belladonna was silent.
âThatâs not it at all. You can stay here as long as you want. Change the villa however you like. Donât worryââ
âI didnât want to hear that from someone else.â
She cut him off.
âWhat?â
âI didnât want to hear from anyone but my husband that heâs leaving for Griblata.â
Her words, though quiet, were firm. Escallionâs hands stopped moving.
âMaybe Iâve just sat here silently, so you think of me like a doll or a piece of furniture.â
âBella, itâs not like that.â
âBut Iâm your wife. Things like your schedule⌠I want to hear them directly from you.â
Hearing the faint sadness in her voice, Escallion ran a hand through his hair.
âI didnât know you cared about this. Since youâre not going to Griblata yourself, I didnât think it was important.â
âHow could I not care?â
âStuff like this isnât fun. Itâs not an important story for you.â
Belladonna fell silent.
Fun? Important? Are we not married? How can he measure family stories by whatâs fun or important?
She calmed herself, then said,
âLet me decide whatâs important to me.â
âOkay, okay. Please donât be mad. I donât know how to handle this.â
ââŚâ
âIâm just not used to sharing my day or little stories with anyone. I always thought my schedule only needed to be told to my aides or knights.â
Escallion scratched his head, looking embarrassed.
âBut I know now, I canât do that with a wife. I get it. I was wrong, so can you please relax that scary face? I never imagined the gentle saint could look so frightening.â
âIâm not angry.â
âIf this isnât angry, Iâm terrified to see what you look like when you are.â
Belladonna finally softened her expression, unable to hold back a smile at his exaggeration.
Escallion pulled her into his arms.
âIâm sorry. I shouldâve told you and not made you worry. Just yesterday, talking about Scarlett, I realized how important it is to tell you things, but I forgot already.â
Belladonna raised her arms and hugged him back, feeling her disappointment melt away.
He whispered in his deep voice,
âTo make it up to you, tell me what you want. Iâll give you anything.â
âAnything?â
âYes. Jewelry, accessories⌠though I know you donât care for those. Whatever you want, just say it.â
He kept rubbing her back, wanting to make it right.
Belladonna answered right away, without a momentâs hesitation:
âThen⌠please take me with you when you go. I donât want to stay here alone, away from you.â
