Chapter 23
In the end, Leon didnât come with me.
Instead, he smiled brightly and saw me off.
He looked so relieved. Was he really that happy to see me go?
âWhat does it matter if Leon dances or laughs? I just have to focus on staying alive.â
I tried to push away the emptiness I felt, but for some reason, my heart felt heavy.
âMadam, is something bothering you?â
Amy asked with a worried face as she looked at me.
I thought I was hiding my feelings well, but it mustâve shown on my face.
âItâs nothing. I just feel a bit dizzy from riding the carriage for so long.â
âThen letâs stop and rest for a moment. Some fresh air might help.â
âNo, weâre almost there. Letâs keep going.â
I heard Esta was a quiet and peaceful city.
I thought Iâd enjoy the calm atmosphere while I was here.
Even if I didnât find the relic this time, I promised myself I wouldnât get anxious.
âMadam, weâre in Esta!â
Mary shouted excitedly.
âYes.â
I turned to look out the windowâ
âWhat? Why is it like this? I was told it was supposed to be quiet!â
Outside the carriage, Esta was crowded with people.
There were so many people in the streets that the carriage couldnât move.
âI also⌠I was told it would be quiet. Iâll go find out.â
Amy got off the carriage and came back after a short while.
âMadam, I donât think we can go any further. Youâll have to walk from here.â
âAre you sure weâre in the right place? Is this really Esta?â
I took Amyâs hand as I stepped out of the carriage and asked.
âYes, this is definitely Esta.
But it turns out everyone came out to see a guest attending the templeâs donation event.â
âMe? Iâm this popular? I havenât even done anything!â
I was surprised, but it didnât feel bad.
Did Bella do some good deeds without telling me?
I looked at Amy with a pleased smile.
But Amyâs face was full of confusion.
I realized something was wrong and wanted to cover my mouth.
âItâs⌠not me, is it?â
âNo⌠They say the Saint is visiting Esta today.
But if people knew you were coming, Iâm sure there would be a few fans somewhere⌠maybe one or two?â
Are you making fun of me?
Amy pressed her lips tightly together, her mouth twitching.
I glared at her and huffed as I walked through the crowd.
And now I had to see Cassia again?
I really didnât want to.
We werenât supposed to meet right now.
Did she come here to look for the relic too?
âMadam, please slow down.â
But we were already too deep into the crowd.
By the time we finally reached the front of the temple, my once-clean dress was a mess.
The holy knights at the gate blocked us from entering.
âNo one is allowed inside right now. The event starts tomorrow afternoonââ
âThis is the Grand Duchess of Aster.â
The priests looked me over again and quickly bowed.
âS-sorry. Things are so chaotic, we didnât recognize you.â
âI look like this because I had to walk through the crowd.â
I kept explaining, but they barely listened, so I quietly stopped talking.
âPlease come this way. The High Priest is waiting for you.â
The knights guided us to the priests.
After greeting the priests, we finally entered the temple.
âI heard the Saint has arrived.â
âYes. She arrived a little earlier and is meeting with the High Priest now.â
âArenât I going to meet the High Priest too?
So doesnât that mean Iâll meet the Saint too?â
âYes. Youâre lucky. This is a rare chance.â
No, Iâm not lucky. Iâd rather be unlucky right now.
Just thinking about how Cassia would look at me made me nervous.
âWow! Madam, you really are lucky!â
âYou sound a little too happy about this.â
Amy clasped her hands together, her eyes sparkling as she nodded.
I sighed deeply and promised myself Iâd only attend the donation event and not even try to search for the relic.
It would be better not to make things worse with Cassia here.
âPlease come in.â
In the guest room filled with holy energy, I finally met the High Priest and Cassia.
The High Priest welcomed me with excitement, even though it was our first time meeting.
Cassia stood beside him, quietly watching me.
âThis is the Grand Duchess of Aster,â the High Priest introduced me.
âI know. Weâve met before,â Cassia replied calmly.
It was such an awkward moment, I didnât know what to say.
But they say you canât throw spit at a smiling face, right?
Iâve already acted crazy so many times to survive.
Whatâs one more time?
I made up my mind and began to laugh sweetly.
âItâs been a while, Saint.â
But only the High Priest laughed with me.
Cassia didnât even smile.
âWhat were you talking about? Esta is in a frenzy right now.â
I sat on the couch and chatted casually.
Once I sat, the High Priest and Cassia also took their seats.
âYou really are as bright and cheerful as the rumors say, Your Grace.â
âI know what the rumors say. Iâm guessing your words werenât exactly a compliment.â
The High Priest waved his hands quickly, looking flustered.
Didnât they say strong denial is a strong affirmation?
âOf course not!â
âItâs okay. I was joking.
By the way, why did the Saint come here?
Before I came to Esta, I hadnât heard sheâd be attending this event.â
I tried not to look at Cassia as I spoke to the High Priest.
âActually, the High Priest of Lianus Temple was supposed to come,
But something came up, so I came in his place.
The other high priests were all busy as well.â
âI feel sorry for High Priest Jason, but weâre lucky the Saint came instead.
Thatâs why so many people showed up.
Weâre the ones who should be thankful!â
Cassia smiled shyly and nodded.
But it was a completely different face from the way she looked at me earlier.
I mustâve really gotten on her bad side.
âI only came because the High Priest kindly invited me for this donation event.â
I pointed to the High Priest with both hands in a respectful pose.
I wanted Cassia to know I wasnât here for any other reason.
Of course, I did have another reasonâ
But in front of her, I had to pretend I didnât.
Our eyes met briefly, and Cassiaâs expression turned cold.
âOnce she finds out Aesar is with Leon, sheâll be thankful to me!
Why is she acting like this?â
That icy stare made my chest feel tight.
âHigh Priest Jason didnât say he would stay the night,
So we didnât prepare a room for him.
But weâre getting one ready now. Please wait a little.â
âOkay.â
âWeâve already prepared your room, Grand Duchess.
You must be tired from the trip,
So rest for a bit, and come a little early before afternoon prayer.
Weâll give a special blessing for you and the Duke.â
âNo, thatâs not neâ I mean⌠thatâs so touching. A blessing for us?â
I looked emotional, making my eyes sparkle.
The High Priestâs cheeks turned red with pride.
I recognized that faceâ
It was the look of someone obsessed with money.
I had already felt uneasy when I heard he came recommended by the Aster temple.
Now I could guess how much he planned to take from us.
I imagined Leon fuming and unfairly yelling at Kalsen.
âEven that look of his is kind of cute.â
ââŚAm I crazy?â
Why was I thinking about that here?
ââŚWe are not crazy,â the High Priest said.
âOh⌠That was just my extreme way of saying Iâm happy.â
Cassia let out a short laugh through her nose.
Then she met my eyes, turned serious, and looked right at me.
âI have a request, Your Grace.â
