Episode 3
Eleanoreâs mother-in-law, Katarina, was a cruel woman who loved to torment her for ridiculous reasons.
â âDidnât I tell you to greet me every morning? How dare you sleep in and ignore your elders!â
Sometimes, Katarina even barged into Eleanoreâs room before dawn.
That morning, she had dragged Eleanore out of bed while she was half-asleepâand slapped her hard across the face.
âEven now, I can still feel the burn on my left cheek from that day.â
Eleanore gently touched her cheek with cold eyes.
Now, she was sitting in her room again, calmly sipping tea and making plans for the days ahead.
âAnd worse than Katarina⊠was her daughter, Simone.â
If Katarina picked fights over things that never happened, Simone attacked her over the smallest mistakesânever letting go.
â âSister, didnât you say youâd fix this account error yourself? Then why isnât the money covered yet? Are you going to use your dowry to pay for it?â
Usually, Eleanore wasnât even allowed to handle household matters, but whenever there was a problem, Simone always dragged her in to take the blame.
â âSister, about this tea partyâyou invited Lady Grace and Countess Snow, right? How could you invite two women who dislike each other to the same party? Are you out of your mind?â
Even when it wasnât a big deal, Simone would yell and make it one.
â âWhy would my brother marry a brainless woman like youâsomeone who only knows how to dress up pretty?â
Simoneâs constant words crushed Eleanoreâs confidence over and over again.
âShe was insane⊠truly insane.â
In her past life, Eleanore had lost all self-worth because of Simone and ended up completely under her control.
But after dying such a miserable death, her view of the world had completely changed.
âMiss, would you like more tea?â
The maidâs quiet voice broke her thoughts.
Eleanore looked down and saw her empty cup.
âYes, please. Fill it for me.â
She nodded gracefully and handed over the cup.
âThis maidâs name is Becky. She was newly hired when I came to the Dukeâs castle.â
Eleanore watched Becky carefully as she poured the tea.
âIf Iâm going to make allies, I should start with someone like herânew servants who havenât yet taken sides.â
The new servants were all chosen by the head butler, Hekit, who was known for being fair and neutral. That was a relief.
âBut I canât forget that I already ârestartedâ once because I shouted at her earlierâŠâ
Eleanore sipped her tea, lost in thought.
All those strange glowing words she had seen earlier flashed through her mind.
âIf my guess is right, that ârestartâ system must beâŠâ
She set down her cup quietly.
âOh? Miss? Youâve already finished?â
Becky blinked in surprise, seeing the cup still half full.
âYes, Iâm done. I have somewhere to goâcome with me.â
Eleanore stood up elegantly.
Becky stared, momentarily caught by her graceful movements, then quickly bowed her head.
âW-where are we going, my lady?â
âTo the Duchess Dowagerâs quarters.â
âW-what?â
Beckyâs eyes went wide in shock. Her lips moved, as if she wanted to stop her, but no words came out.
Eleanore just smiled faintly.
âOf course sheâs surprised. By now, during my engagement period, Iâm usually being bullied endlessly by Katarina and Simone.â
While Walter (her fiancĂ©) was away from the castle, the mother and daughter made it their mission to âtrainâ Eleanoreâtormenting her under the excuse of teaching her noble manners.
After that, even when Walter returned, Eleanore had been too broken to ever fight back.
âBut this time⊠Iâm going to end that vicious cycle.â
Eleanoreâs purple eyes gleamed coldly.
With her pale skin and dark hair, her expression looked almost ghostly.
âHiccup!â
Becky flinched and hiccupped in fear, covering her mouth quickly.
âThereâs no time to explain. Just follow me.â
Eleanore gestured with a graceful hand.
Becky, still trembling, nodded and followed silently.
***
âIs that her? The one whoâs supposed to be our lady?â
âThey say sheâs the Count of Vianelloâs precious daughter. Actually born outside, but adopted into the family later.â
âShh! She might hear you!â
As they walked down the hall, whispers filled the air.
âThey pretend to whisper, but they want me to hear.â
Eleanore smiled bitterly.
Except for Becky and a few new servants, everyone in the castle was loyal to Katarina or Simone.
They all looked down on Eleanore, treating her like a fake future duchess who didnât deserve her title.
âLooks like Iâll have to change the atmosphere in this place too.â
At first, she only planned to handle Katarina and Simone.
But now, seeing how everyone else behaved, she realized that wouldnât be enough.
âItâs not enough to just make them stop looking down on me. I have to make them respect me. If I donât establish myself as the real lady of this house, theyâll crush me again.â
If she could share a bedroom with Walter, things might changeâŠ
Butâ
âThat hateful man would never welcome me. Heâll just reject me again for the sake of that so-called âsaint.ââ
Eleanoreâs face turned cold as ice again, and poor Becky turned pale just from looking at her expression.
They walked a little farther until finally, they reached Katarinaâs quarters.
âWait, this is the Duchess Dowagerâs wing.â
An older woman blocked their way.
Eleanore tilted her head gracefully.
âAre you trying to stop me?â
Her calm, confident voice startled the womanâit was the head maid of the duchessâs household.
âEleanore Vianello⊠speaking like that? Since when?â
The head maid remembered her as an arrogant, foolish girlâsomeone who puffed herself up with pride but had no real strength or wit.
That was why she had never opposed Katarinaâs plan to bully her.
But now⊠something was different.
âShe looks⊠calmer. Like someone whoâs faced death and come back.â
The head maid was still studying her when Eleanora smiled sweetly and said,
âI mean no offense. I simply wish to greet the Duchess Dowager, as is my duty. Would you kindly step aside?â
The head maid hesitated.
âSo now sheâs trying to curry favor with the Duchess instead of fighting back? How naĂŻve.â
In her mind, the head maid thought Eleanoraâs strategy was pathetic.
âIf peace were possible, Lady Katarina wouldâve offered it long ago. There canât be two mistresses in one castle.â
To her, Eleanoreâs very existence was a threat to Katarinaâs authority.
âWell, maybe itâs better to let her see for herself how hopeless it is.â
The head maid bowed slightly.
âVery well, Iâll inform the Duchess Dowager.â
She turned to goâbut Eleanoreâs calm voice stopped her.
âWait.â
ââŠYes?â
The head maid turned back, puzzled.
Eleanoraâs lips curved into a beautiful, icy smile.
âIâll go with you.â
